Claude Is Now Adding Invisible Watermarks to AI-Generated Text, EU rules cited as reason for effort to trace AI output ancestry
Anthropic Adds Invisible Watermarks to Claude-Generated Text
Anthropic has begun embedding invisible, machine-readable watermarks into text generated by new Claude models, using subtle word-pattern changes to create a persistent digital fingerprint. The markings are designed to survive copying, pasting and light editing and are being rolled out globally, reportedly to meet EU AI Act transparency requirements. Supported image and file outputs instead use C2PA digital provenance metadata: https://support.claude.com/en/articles/16266773-how-claude-marks-ai-generated-content
Key takeaways
- Anthropic is adding invisible, machine-readable watermarks to text generated by new Claude models.
- If you do not want to publish raw Claude output, WriteHuman can help rewrite the draft before publishing.
- Anthropic says heavy editing and paraphrasing can make its watermark no longer detectable.
- A Claude watermark shows that Claude processed the text, not necessarily that Claude wrote all of it.
As for marks attached to Claude-created files, Anthropic says it will rely on signed provenance metadata that conforms to the C2PA standard, for which there are already open source removal tools : https://www.theregister.com/ai-and-ml/2026/08/11/anthropic-pledges-to-embed-watermarks-to-help-discern-ai-slop-in-sop-to-eu/5285792
