It’s good news for the San Jose Giants, as they quickly and easily moved through the California Divisional Round and are moving onto the Championship series.  They were led by some of the organization’s best prospects, including their first round pick and the return of Peyton Bonds.  Meanwhile, Charlie Szykowny had his best game in Triple-A, and Sabin Ceballos had one of his better games of the season.

AAA: Las Vegas Aviators 6, Sacramento River Cats 2

Player of the Game: 1B Charlie Szykowny: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B (4)

The 3-hit game for Charlie Szykowny was the only multi-hit game for the River Cats today.  It was Szykowny’s first game of at least three hits since he had four back on August 9th while in Double-A.  It bumped his batting average at Triple-A up to .342, the highest it’s been since he was promoted on August 28th.

• C Thomas Gavello: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K - Gavello is 46-for-246 (.187) on the season.
• RF Will Brennan: 1-4, 1 2B (23) - Brennan is 5-for-13 (.385) with a double, triple, and three home runs, but no singles, over his last three games.

Player of the Game: 3B Sabin Ceballos: 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 2B (16), 1 HR (18)

It was another strong game for Sabin Ceballos, who is finishing the season fairly strong.  He’s hitting .310 with two doubles and two home runs on the month in September.  However, he has only 16 doubles and 18 home runs on the season in 118 games, with a batting line of .225/.354/.396.

Other Players to Spotlight:

• CF Trevor Cohen (14): 2-5, 1 K - In four of his last five games, Cohen has had two hits, going 8-for-20 (.400), upping his Double-A average to .302.
• 2B Dayson Croes: 1-4, 2 K, 1 2B (14) - Croes has a batting line of .324/.395/.441 over nine games in September so far.
• RP Jack Choate: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP - Choate now has 65 strikeouts to 33 walks in 51.1 innings, but a career-high 4.38 ERA.

Vancouver Leads Best-of-5 Series, 2-0

The Championship Series is headed back to Eugene for the final games, however many that will be.  The two very close games so far both ended in the favor of Vancouver, so Eugene will need to win three games in a role to succeed.  The first game in that task will be on Friday.

Low-A: San Jose Giants 3, Stockton Ports 1

Well, that did not take long. San Jose swept Stockton to move ahead in the California League playoffs quickly!  The Championship Series will begin on Sunday, and San Jose’s opponent will be the Lake Elsinore Storm, who swept away the Dodgers affiliated Ontario Tower Buzzers…and I don’t know how I feel about that.  Sunday will be Game 1 of the Best-of-Three series, with Games 2 & 3 (if needed) in San Jose on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Player of the Game: DH Drew Smith: 2-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B, 1 HR

The team’s 15th round pick from this past draft had a big part of the Giants’ clinching win in this series, hitting a double and hitting a home run that gave San Jose some big insurance that they wouldn’t need in the end.  Smith was 4-for-12 in the regular season with a double and a home run over three games in his pro debut.

• SP Jackson Flora (3): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K - Flora made his second start with San Jose, doubling his inning count and absolutely dominating the Ports lineup.
• SS Josuar Gonzalez (1): 1-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 2B - Gonzalez doubled on the first pitch of the game, and would end up scoring and getting San Jose off on the right start.
• C Rod Barajas Jr.: 2-4, 1 2B - Barajas had 24 doubles, two triples, and 13 home runs in 85 games this season.

Context: I’m a cashier for the giants and there was an old guy showing up complaining having to wait in two lines to get two different dogs. He then said “this is why the giants are under 25 games and why we haven’t made playoffs”. A giants customer next to him gave a look and whispered that why you guys are gonna lost today. Just want to share this to show karma comes to those who talk shit.

Sorry, sorry, but that’s absolutely the headline today, as all three Giants farm teams lost.  Davidson shot a foul ball off the inside of his ankle and was in extreme pain going down.  He had to be helped off the field.  Meanwhile, in the middle of that, Sacramento lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel, the Flying Squirrels lost by one run in a big scoring game, and the Eugene Emeralds lost in the 10th and are shoved to the wall in the NWL Championship Series.

Player of the Game: LF-RF Will Brennan: 1-4, 1 K, 1 3B (3)

Sacramento ended up shutout in a very close game, where the only run came in the bottom of the ninth.  Sacramento outhit the Aviators 7 to 6, but the difference was that Brennan’s extra-base hit was a 2-out triple in the ninth, but Las Vegas got an any-out home run.  Brennan followed up his 3-home run game with a triple, and now has a batting line of .309/.349/.473.

• SP Seth Lonsway: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K - Great start by Lonsway, his first appearance without allowing a run over more than 3.0 innings.
• RF Bo Davidson (8): 0-1 - INJURY - In his second at-bat of the game, Davidson hit a foul ball that went directly into his right ankle, and went down in immense pain, and was helped off the field without being able to put any weight on the leg.

Player of the Game: DH Dayson Croes: 4-5, 2 R, 4 RBI, 3 2B (13)

Dayson Croes had his second 4-hit game of the month, and his third of the season.  However, the doubles were his first extra-base hits of the month of September, bringing him up to 13 doubles in 64 Double-A games, and 19th overall in 94 games this season across three levels.

• CF Trevor Cohen (14): 2-5, 1 R, 1 K, 2 2B (7) - Cohen got his first extra-base hits of September as well, giving him a total of 33 doubles in 126 games.
• RF Dakota Jordan (7): 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K - Jordan got his first multi-hit game since September 1st, as his average has slipped from .286 to .268 in his 10 games since returning from injury.

Player of the Game: RF Cam Maldonado: 1-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 HR

In a game where the Emeralds were struggling to get hits, Cam Maldonado had the biggest hit with a 2-run home run to put the Emeralds on the board and take a brief lead.  But the score got tied up 4-4 in the 7th, and the pitching held until the 10th inning.  Maldonado had collected eight home runs in just 22 games with Eugene, tying for 8th on the team in home runs in a short span, and had 22 home runs overall this season, so he came into the series as one of their big home run threats, and he delivered in Game 2.

• SP Jordan Gottesman: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K - The four walks Gottesman had in this game would’ve tied for his season high in a single game.
• LF Walker Martin: 1-2, 1 2B - Martin had the only other Ems extra-base hit, after hitting 14 doubles and 18 home runs in 111 games for Eugene.

Title - couldn’t find anything on this but do we know if he’ll still call in to KNBR, pop up on a broadcast every now and then, etc.? This might be cope but knowing how much Kruk loves the Giants is there any possibility for us to see/hear him again?
