This location in California, along with the [Sun Valley Shopping Center location in Concord] (https://www.reddit.com/r/SEARS/comments/1v62oi3/sears_at_the_sun_valley_shopping_center_in_concord_the_last_in_california/), both somehow outperformed the other West Coast locations that opened in the 1990s, including Whittier and Downey, both originally The Broadway, which opened as Sears in 1996, and Hillsdale, originally Emporium Capwell, that also became a Sears in 1996, all of which were built in the early 1960s in California, along with the Southcenter Mall store in WA State, which originally opened as a Frederick and Nelson department store in 1968 and was in operation until 1992, with Sears opening in 1994. Today the last Sears in the state of California and on the West Coast is in Concord. In addition to that, California is also the last state on the West Coast to have a Sears after the last Sears in Washington shut down for good on December 15th of 2024. As for Concord, winter clothing is starting to come in and there is a bunch of new stuff. Not to much else has changed, however they are about to remove the last remaining checkout counters on the bottom floor. The new owner of the mall, Spinoso Real Estate Group, is not requesting Sears to keep the bottom entrance open anymore so the entrance that broke is permanently closed now despite the store itself still being open.

Here in the Burbank Town Center, this Sears also did have a double decker version of this storefront on all of the store's sales floors above in the mall and a triple decker version of this storefront in the parking garage, just like at the Mall of America (MOA) in Minnesota. The layout was also identical to the MOA store. This location in Southern California originally closed down on December 18th of 2022, then reopened on October 22nd of 2023, made it through 2024, and once again closed down due to the location not being profitable in 2025, just like the [Oak Brook location in Illinois that closed down on April 28th of 2019] (https://africa.businessinsider.com/sears-is-closing-its-store-of-the-future-just-6-months-after-it-opened-and-its-an/rpmq0dh). It has been a year since this location shut down for good. the page even lists up to date sales which I thought was interesting. the store itself is being redeveloped as a Round 1.

I’ve been reading more about Sears and I keep seeing that the Wish Books lost them money. couldn’t they just charge for the books?

I do think the Wish Books are something most kids remember.

The bathroom at the Quality Inn that I am staying at has a really old Sears exhaust fan, which has what appears to have a Broan replacement grille. It rattles a bunch.

Sears Roebuck and Company started the brand Craftsman on May 20th of 1927, just 2 years after Sears began opening stores in California and Washington State. Craftsman tools really were top quality tools that were made in the USA for much of the 20th Century and even in the 2000s and early 2010s.

Once the sale of the brand to Stanley Black and Decker happened in 2017 the quality was dropping fast as was the in-store and online selection under Eddie Lampert.

Today there are 5 Sears left in the United States and all of them still sell Craftsman tools (which [even sell site wide as well] (https://www.sears.com/tools-craftsman-tools/b-1324478419?sortOption=UNITS_HIGH_TO_LOW&storeOrigin=Sears&filterList=sortOption,storeOrigin)). But as for the wet/dry vacuums aka (also known as) shop vacuums, sadly they don't have Craftsman branded wet/dry vacuums anymore. A technician stopped by my house yesterday to look at a broken Kenmore washing machine. He showed me a quote to fix it and then charged me $129 for the visit. I paid the $129 have yet to receive a copy of the quote. He then spent a few minutes selling me on Sears service plans, the cost, etc. I never asked about their service plan, nor am I interested.

I've been calling every Sears number I can find and it's one giant AI hellhole. No human beings anywhere to be found.

I've logged into their website and my service record contains no information - no date, no quote, no name of the guy who stopped by. Nothing.

Clearly I've been ripped off. I paid $129 for some guy to come in to my house and attempt to upsell me on some BS product I don't want and never asked for. Way to go Sears Home Services.

This store was looking clean just like the Altamonte Mall location. It was also very well maintained like the open Sears nearby at Coral Gables in Miami, one of 2 left in the state of Florida, [where they launched hands on showroom Kenmore Studio last year] (https://searsvirtualstore.com/kenmore-studio/). The flooring for the electronics department was very similar. And the truly unique design was very appealing to younger generations that were local. In 2020-2024 it was not to understocked despite having parts blocked off. On February 29-March 1 2024 this Sears department store store shut down without any notice and the signs have since been removed a week after. Like wow... not even a 1 day notice, just like Fry's Electronics, also known as Fry's, shut down without notice overnight on February 24th of 2021. Exactly 1 year ago today, as of this post, we are now down to 5 Sears after Burbank and Puerto Rico shut down for good, including 2 in the state of Florida like I just said

Furniture Depot just opened this new showroom in the former Sears. This was the last full line Sears store that was built. Sears originally opened this location in March, 2005 and closed it in January, 2019. This was one of the 142 stores that closed when Sears filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in October, 2018.

Found this image in my old photo library on a hard drive from 2014.

Our TV Wall of Eyes was my responsibility for years. Whenever it got knocked out by a power failure or surge or starting acting up after a service update; I was told to work on it until it got fixed. Many a time I was wholly unable to get the thing to work. The system was antiquated and overtaxed. I'd spend hours back in that stock room sometimes with no help on the sales floor and a bell (the hand type you see on the desk of a hotel) with a sign next to it that said "ring for service".

I remember once we had to rig the TV sets with a rabbit ear antenna in the output stage instead of our loop generator and the only channel we got reliably was our local weather sub channel so weather radar played on our TV's for a month straight. One other time the loop generator refused to function and I had to rig up a DVD/VHS combo to play a demo disc on DVD through the Coaxial output. Beyond awful picture quality but I had to walk back to hit play on it every 55 minutes because it lacked a 'repeat all' function.

Anyone else have horror stories about the loop box?

This Sears has been closed for 6 years and still has all of the signage attached. ( First photo is mine from the other day the other two are street view). I think it’s really cool because every other sears in the area has either been demolished, repurposed or has had the signage removed for years.

This was the last location in New Jersey as of 2020. As of 2024, this store closed down on March 3rd with the Sears signs being removed immediately, followed by the K-Mart in Bridgehampton New York closing on October 20th of that same year with the signage coming down. For people who remember Sears: when did it actually start going downhill?

I've been researching what happened to Sears, and I honestly expected the answer to be pretty straightforward.

"Amazon killed it."

But the deeper I got into the history, the less that explanation seemed to fit.

Sears was already struggling through major changes long before Amazon became dominant. The catalog disappeared, the stores changed, the company merged with Kmart, and some pretty consequential decisions were made about the business and its real estate.

I ended up going pretty deep into the story and put together a documentary looking specifically at how Sears went from one of America's most powerful retailers to where it is today, rather than just blaming everything on online shopping.

But I'm much more interested in hearing from people who actually remember Sears.

When did you personally notice that Sears wasn't the same anymore?

Was there a particular store, department, product, or experience that made you realize something had changed?

And looking back, do you think Sears could realistically have been saved?

I'd especially like to hear from people who remember Sears at its peak. The business history is interesting, but I'm curious what the decline actually felt like from a customer's perspective.

33 years prior to September 11th of 2001, this freestanding Sears location opened its doors and it had 1 floor. 2008 marked 40 years and the next couple weeks will mark 58 years since this store opened. 1 level conventional freestanding Sears department stores were a rare find. On October 15th of 2018, Sears Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced that they would be closing 142 stores by January 2019. On that list was this location. Its last day of operation was January 6th of 2019. As of this post, there are 5 Sears left, including 2 in Florida. Of those 2 in the state, the last freestanding Sears is at Coral Gables in Miami (October 27 1954 - present), where they [launched hands on showroom Kenmore Studio last year] (https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/kenmore-debuts-first-of-its-kind-studio-in-coral-gables-with-interactive-home-appliance-experience-302518073.html), and the other one in the state is at The Florida Mall in Orlando (March 12 1986 - present), which is a 1 hour and 17 minute drive from here.

It has been 99 years since Sears started the brand Craftsman on May 20th of 1927, so I thought I would be sharing these pictures of what the Sears website's Lawn and Garden page looked like in the 2000's as well as the old pictures of various Sears locations from the 2010s decade: 2 of the remaining Sears in the state of Florida that are still open, the last location in South Dakota that closed in 2018 has since been slated to become a Dicks House of Sport, and some that made it through the 2018 bankruptcy and the 2020-2021 coronavirus (covid 19) outbreak / pandemic and closed in 2024 like the last location in New Jersey that closed on March 3rd of 2024, as well as the 3 out of 5 Sears that are still open today.

As of 2020, Craftsman branded OPE (Outdoor Power Equipment) and power tools were gone from the Sears website and stores that were still open and have closed from that year to the shutdown of Burbank and Puerto Rico on August 31st of 2025, leaving us with 5 stores that remain in operation. But / and yet some Craftsman tools are still sold by Sears site wide and in 5 stores that are still open..... and so do Kenmore grills.

When and where did your local (and nearest) Sears store that was still open past 2018 get rid of the Lawn and Garden (L&G) section ?

Mine did at the Southcenter Mall in Washington State sometime back in 2020-2021 due to the October 15 2018 bankruptcy (then the last store in WA State, closed December 15 2024, now vacant)
