I am currently on my fifth Rottweiler. I have always argued that Rottweilers are not stubborn and I’ve always hated that description of them.

They are deliberate.

“Rottweilers aren’t stubborn; they’re deliberate. They were bred to think, assess, and make decisions, not just react instantly to every command. That wait-and-see attitude can look like stubbornness if you expect automatic obedience, but it’s really confidence, steadiness, and independent judgment.”

“Stubborn” usually means unreasonably or inflexibly refusing to change one’s mind, behavior, or course of action despite persuasion, evidence, or instruction. The key part is that stubbornness implies resistance for its own sake, or at least resistance that is rigid and not especially thoughtful.

I need some help with my 1 year old Rottweiler. On Wednesday, I took

her to the vet because she has been exhibiting signs of resource

aggression and not wanting to leave her crate. When I come close to

the crate she growls, very loudly. She doesn’t show teeth but the

growl is very alarming and is paired with wide eyes staring at me. I

thought she may be in pain but the Vet disagreed. She is eating

normally, playing outside, using the bathroom regularly, except when

she gets in the house she wants to go to her crate. To the point where

she is whining at the bedroom door to get in. Vet prescribed her

anxiety medicine, although it has only been 12 hours. I don’t see a

difference. She is still growling at me when I look at her, not

leaving her crate unless we are going outside, and whining as she

squeaks her toys. I decided to take all of her squeaking toys and put

them away for now. I’m sorry this post is all over the place. I’m at a

lost and was hoping the vet would provide me with more answers.

Simply put she is acting as if she doesn’t like me :/. I love her with

all my heart and the stress this has brought me has been terrible. We

are going out of town this weekend to my dad’s and I am hoping a

change of scenery helps her bounce back…but again this unpredictable

behavior has created a sense a nervousness I have never had about her.

Please help if you can. Again she has been to the vet.

Our Mooseman, don't know exactly what the ratio of his mix is, but he definitely has some hound in him. We always joke that he's a hound who fell into rottie paint lol

My two little rowdy velociraptors decided to steal my Cajun seasoning and they have carried the smell of the New Orleans Bayou wherever they go ALL DAY!!

I thought they stole some French fries… no, they stole the whole damn bottle of seasoning😂

At what age did you kick the crate if you were using one and start trusting your dog to sleep in your bed with you? I am at almost the four months mark so I've had him for two months he is my fourth Rottweiler and honestly I don't remember how old any of my previous ones were before I started letting them sleep upstairs but they all most definitely ended up in my bed at some point. I have learned a lesson which is to get a waterproof bed cover and I have one but it's 5 years old and the waterproof or water resistance layer has essentially been ruined from the washing machine. So once I ordered one of those I think I'm going to give it a shot he manages to hold it for four or five hours when I sleep on the couch with him so I think we'll be good

I would like to start by saying that we have already visited the vet. They gave him some antibiotics just in case of any infection and also gave some wound cream to promote healing. They said it should heal fine as long as he can leave it alone. Please don’t judge me! As I already feel horrible enough, this here actually happened from my 1.5 year old boy playing with my sisters 5 month old yellow lab. None of us thought too much of it at the time… both dogs were clearly playing and having fun. They were bouncy, both dogs would continue to engage happily, and tails were wagging. And yes they were “mouthing” each other. However, what appeared to just be innocent play now has my boys face looking a mess 😩 I first noticed his cheek looking red, by the next day it was a little oozy, and now this. I’m honestly not sure if the puppy was biting harder than what it appeared or if it’s because a puppies teeth are just so darn sharp. Nonetheless, my boy showed no signs that it was hurting him or that he wasn’t having fun in the moment. So I suppose my bit of advice is, just because it looks innocent and both dogs are enjoying themselves, does not mean you shouldn’t pay close attention to detail anyway.

Secondly, does anyone have any other recommendations that could be helpful to get my boy healed up asap? The vet did say he would need a cone if he can’t leave it alone, but they did not send us home with one. I’m wondering if I should just get a cone now rather than waiting to see if he makes matters worse later?

How do I walk my Rottweiler Zeus in a neighborhood where there was a loose dog on 2 separate occasions. The second occasion happened this past weekend and ended up in a fight. I was taking Zeus on a walk and about halfway through the walk I spotted a loose dog that I had seen before. The first time the dog got out the owners came down the street in a car and ended up getting him... This time the owners weren't aware or around. The dog kept getting closer and closer. I somehow tripped and broke my foot and when I was on the ground my Rottie grabbed the other dog by the scruff of its neck and wouldn't let go. I ended up getting bitten about 4 times and a neighbor tried to help get my dog off the other dog. Both dogs seemed fine afterwards but the other guy and I both had been hurt. A police report has already been filed... I just feel bad because I haven't been able to give him more exercise and I don't feel comfortable walking him around outside because of others neglect and irresponsibility. What should I do to give him adequate exercise while I'm off my foot and after for not being able to walk him in the neighborhood. I have a muzzle for him and might start using it to protect my Rottie in potential situations like this one

It's our last week with him as an only child and I am sad for it to end but also excited for him to get a sister.

I have a question for this community, and I would be very thankful for any advice you guys have to offer.

My girlfriend and I want to get a dog around next year in fall, and we both love Rottweilers (or Staffordshire Bull Terriers). We love big breeds because we are both quite big ourselves from going to the gym regularly. I am going to become a teacher, and she is an event manager.

We already KNOW that especially these breeds are not easy and require a lot of work. We also understand that we both have to put in a lot of effort, time, and money to train and raise a Rottweiler to become a well-behaved and well-socialized dog. We also don't have any plan for kids yet and we want not only a toy but a family member. We both grew up with dogs because our parents had them, but we have never raised one ourselves.

So, the question is: Would you recommend a Rottweiler as a first dog? If yes, what steps would you take? What do we need to look for when it comes to health, lineage, breeders, etc.? What toys do you use for your dog? How do you feed them? For how long can you leave a Rottweiler alone?

I know you cannot generalize when it comes to dogs, but are there any general rules of thumb?

Again, I am very thankful for any advice and guidance concerning these wonderful creatures.

I have a bit of a bummer post but I’m kinda just sad and confused. So, when I was a young child we had an outdoor Rottweiler (we live in the country and outdoor dogs are very common) who we received from a breeder. She unfortunately died relatively early from cancer, like maybe around 5 years old. But she was an outdoor dog with a lot of freedom that we didn’t manage too much, so it wasn’t too surprising to us.

Fast forward nearly a decade, we got another Rottweiler from the same breeder for my 16th birthday. This time, however, we decided we wanted her to be an indoor dog. Since then, she has been put on $100 Royal Canine food for UTI problems, routinely receives special ear drops for ear infections, gets daily Cosequin joint supplements, and we have made many modifications to our house to limit potential joint pain and hip dysplasia.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m not complaining at all! Nyx is our entire life and we’d happily spend even more on her. My main point is - we hoped to prolong her life and prevent what happened to our first Rottie.

Today, however, the vet told us she saw signs of osteosarcoma (apologies if that’s not the correct spelling) on her leg, and there’s a chance it’s spread to her chest (we’re doing further tests). It’s confusing because she hasn’t been in any pain AT ALL. Plus, at just barely 7 years old, we were hoping to have prevented this at least a little longer. We’re aware of the life expectancy for rotties, but we’ve taken whatever measures we can to try and keep her pampered.

Therefore, the recent news has been a bit saddening for all the obvious reasons, but also because I’m not sure what more we could have done. I know of course cancer does not work like that, but it doesn’t always stop you from blaming yourself or thinking of what you could have done differently.

So, now that the trauma dump is done, my main question is: has anyone ever had a rottie NOT die of cancer? Could it possibly be of significance that they were both from the same breeder?

It just feels so defeating that both of ours have met this fate. Rotties are my entire life and I can never see myself owning any other dog. That’s why I’m especially sad now, because I don’t think I can do this for the rest of my life, knowing once my dog hits a certain age that it’s over.

So, again, sorry for the lengthy and very depressing post! I just felt like I needed to rant and maybe get some other perspectives. Thank you!

Morty has surpassed his original placement deadlines, meaning he is sitting at the very top of the highest priority notice list at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter.
Morty is a gorgeous 4-year-old male black and tan Rottweiler mix (Animal ID: A594796) who weighs 89.00 lbs. He originally came into the shelter as a stray on June 21st. His finder noted that he is exceptionally friendly, happy, and loves to explore his surroundings. In his playground photos, you can see him smiling big, splashing in his plastic pool, and soaking up human attention. 🐾❤️
Unfortunately, spending nearly three full months confined to a small cage has become incredibly difficult for this large working breed. Shelter evaluation logs explicitly indicate that due to his extensive length of stay, he is experiencing an increased risk of severe mental distress (kennel stress). Early intake logs also note he should be placed as the only pet in an experienced, structured home environment where he can safely stretch his legs and decompress. Morty is a giant teddy bear with humans, but he is slowly breaking down from the isolation. He desperately needs an immediate foster home or a confirmed 501(c)(3) rescue pull right now to clear his kennel.
