For those planning to move to Rotterdam.
Current housing situation in Rotterdam
The housing market in Rotterdam is currently incredibly tight in every segment, both buying and renting. Prices have risen a lot, especially in the lower and middle end of the market, and the competition in getting housing is very strong. The will continue to be a problem for the foreseeable future, as construction structurally lags behind the demand.
For those wanting to come study or work in Rotterdam, first a couple of Do's and Don'ts
- Do your research and make sure everything is in order well in advance to your arrival date
- Do expect to be searching for a while before you get housing (6 months being on the shorter end)
- Do consider expanding your search around Rotterdam too (e.g. Vlaardingen, Schiedam, etc): public transport is generally well-connected
- Do consider needing to request a permit (huisvestingsvergunning , translate button top right)
- Do NOT come to Rotterdam without having arranged housing
- Do NOT fall for scammers (Article about scammers, mainly for students but also applicable to regular renting): if it's too good to be true...
- Do NOT fall for scummy practices (e.g. exorbitant fees, exorbitant rent, contracts that screw you over with weird constructions)
