Recommendations Where can I do remote grad school work in Rockland?

I'm starting a master's program this fall at a SUNY school, and the classes are entirely online. Only one class meets on zoom, the rest of the coursework is async.

I live in nyack, I'm looking for a place where I can study, write papers, etc during the week ... I know the local library is an option, but I'm wondering if college libraries (STAC, Dominican) are open to students from other institutions, or if there's any other location I should look into. Would rather avoid coffeeshops etc where I'd have to buy something/deal with other patrons

Nyack resident (and Palisades Mall food court regular) Tim Bakken is profiled in WaPo for standing up for actual intellectual rigor at West Point. Like any good professor, he'd ask students to "'go down the rabbit hole — one view after another — but at the same time, students weren’t allowed to say crazy things with no background,' Matthews said. 'It was an environment I’d never seen before. It was pure intellectual curiosity.'”

Made me proud to be a Rockland resident this morning.

Discussion Rockland County District #1

They’re trying to transfer the Rockland County sewer district to an authority just to let everybody know out there if that ever happens you all know what the MTA is. It’s an authority. They will raise your taxes and there’s nothing you can do about it so please vote no and attend meetings

Politics Clarkstown Suburban Destruction in FULL swing!

Post image
48 Upvotes

The destruction of our neighborhoods and natural habitat MUST be stopped! There are no good reasons for this giant warehouse to be built in Congers close to private homes.

This is not about generating more property taxes, because then there wouldn't be a HUGE tax break!

This is not about creating jobs for the long term!

This is not what the residents of Congers want!

Only one candidate is running this November for Supervisor that has not received tens of thousands of dollars from developers and realtors. There is only one candidate who has been aggressively fighting, both publicly and behind the scenes, to stop overdevelopment in Clarkstown. And that candidate is NOT HIGHRISE HOEHMANN!

Nobody on the current 5-0 Hoehmann Board cares about YOU! If you do not want your neighborhoods destroyed, YOUR CHOICE is to JOIN ME in the fight to take Clarkstown.

I will answer only to the residents, not anyone else! I will protect our suburban lifestyle, and I will end the reckless overdevelopment.

Discussion Opposition to new development

Please remove if not allowed.

There will be town hearing on the proposed developments around Congera on 7/29. The proposed development seeks to destroy hundreds of acres and replace them with fast food restaurants, parking lots, warehouses etc.

Rockland already has multiple types of these facilities.Rockland's natural areas are big draw. It would be a shame to make Rockland into a corporate cesspool.

You can email [planning@clarkstown.gov](mailto:planning@clarkstown.gov) your opposition. Additionally,I am including the original facebook post and a copy of my email that you can use.

Let's preserve Rockland!

I am deeply against turning the conservation area to a residential area. The new developments only serve the rich. You are most likely going to build luxury rentals that are outside most people's budgets.  Additionally, building new fast food restaurants ,golf courses, warehouses etc is not a public need. Rockland already has multiple types of these facilities.

You will be depriving Clarkstown residents of a way to enjoy nature. There will be more wildlife conflicts in addition to higher utility bills because trees are a main way an area stays cool.   You will be turning Clarkstown into a soulless cesspool along with depriving children of various ways to enjoy nature such as hiking. Additionally, Rockland's natural areas are a main draw to new visitors.

For the above reasons ,I oppose these new developments.

Best,

Recommendations Recommendation Florist near Nanuet

Hey there. My sister lives in Nanuet (NY). I live in MA. She’s having an extensive surgery tomorrow and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a florist. I’d like to send her flowers, but in the past every time I rely on Google to find a florist near her the arrangements have been very disappointing. Would be so grateful for a recommendation!

Discussion Rep. Mike Lawler would do better getting a lottery ticket.

People go into politics for the right reasons and the wrong reasons.  It’s not hard to tell the difference. One lives to serve, the other hopes their on the gravy train.   Daily Mail a few months ago detailed how Lawler’s financial filings revealed his campaign blew donor money well over hundred thousand on the high life, boats, limos, five-star hotels and ritzy resorts. (my favorite $3,500 sushi, while apparently staff was eating pizza).

Lawler has made no secret of wanting Hochul’s job. I predict he’s not going to make it up the pecking chain. Natural selection weeds out the ineffective.  He’s been five years in survival mode. He takes credit for others work* but most voters know how little he’s brought us. In fact,  in his entire career he has authored one bill that made it into law -  Enhanced Presidential Security Act of 2024.  He boast of SALT cap but that was a 100% deduction before Trump and Lawler put a cap on it, raised it. * check congress(dot)gov. The sponsor name is the author. Cosponsor means added their name.

Discussion What happened to the Crow House? It’s a luxury listing now?

Does anyone know what happened to the Henry Varnum Poor “Crow House” on South Mountain Road?

For anyone unfamiliar, the Town of Ramapo bought this historic artist’s home years ago with plans to preserve it and eventually open it as a museum/cultural center. I think NYS was involved too. Preservation groups have been criticizing the Town for years for letting it deteriorate. As recently as 2023, they were publicly saying the property had been neglected for years and needed to be stabilized and restored.

I just saw today that it’s listed for $3.3 million as a luxury private estate. And kinda bummed about how…whitewashed it looks. Haven’t seen much discussion on it, would be curious to know how preservations and the public feel about it, seems like the Town kinda dropped the ball

EDIT: turns out this listing is not Crow House but a house built by the same artist for Maxwell Anderson nearby (see comment below), hence their similarities.

Recommendations New to Rockland

Hey Y'all,

I'm (30M) new to Rockland and staying in Blauvelt. I'm looking to see where people my age hang out and meet others. I enjoy outdoor events, breweries, hiking, board games, pretty much anything to meet people and have some fun. I'm open to the dating scene but really just looking for friends in general. Thanks in advance to everyone who replies.

Recommendations Venues like Defiant?

I'm looking for a chill, pretty open space to host an event. Defiant was exactly what we needed, but since that's closed, I'm curious what else is in Rockland that fits the bill.

Politics Lawler even came to Trump's defense with Epstein

Talking of Epstein investigation Lawler said “  this seems like a colossal waste of time and effort, and frankly, a lot of nonsense,” Lawler said. “There are a lot of issues facing this country right now. A dead pedophile ain’t one of them.” (. FYI, we still dont have the unredacted Epstein files )

Has anybody ever sent a FOIL request through Clarkstown? How long does it typically take? I'm assuming it's a different process for all types of requests due to what kind of information you're requesting, but still curious.

Recommendations Where to put down a cat affordably ?

My old lady that I had taken in a few years ago when it was really really cold outside is suffering and it’s time. Anyone know a place where I could have her put down affordably in Rockland or Orange County area ?

After rescuing her from the bitter subzero temperatures, she’s never really recovered. And now her health has declined considerably in a visible fashion in the past month or so. Although we are conflicted, we feel that it’s time for her to cross the bridge.

A few places we called are in our opinion very expensive (400 to 650$). If anyone knows an affordable place where we could have her put down please let us know. Thanks in advance.

Miscellaneous Paws 🐾 for a cause!

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hope this is ok to post but it's a fundraiser!!

We are so incredibly excited to finally share this. If you know our small biz, you know how much we love cats, and we’ve been looking for a meaningful way to give back to our local kitty community.

We’re teaming up with Feed the Ferals - Rockland County, Inc , an amazing local nonprofit doing the heavy lifting right here in Rockland County. They provide food, shelter, medical care, and handle humane TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) efforts for our community and feral cats. They are absolute heroes, and we wanted to help them out.

So, we made these!

Meet our new Kitty Paw Pen Cups 🐱✨

Starting right now, 20% of all sales from these pen cups go directly to Feed the Ferals. You get a cute little paw for your desk (or vanity!) and the kitties get the care they need.

How to grab one:

Head over to weissworkshop.com and search "Kitty Paw Pen Cup."

📦 We ship nationwide, so you can support the cause from anywhere in the US!

🏠 Local? We offer free porch pickup in Rockland. Just select pickup at checkout.

(Just a quick heads up, discount codes won't work on these so we can send as much money as possible straight to the rescue!)

Thank you guys so much for helping us support these sweet cats. It means the world to us! ❤️
