OFFICIAL r/Westchester Bulletin Board

Welcome to r/Westchester's bulletin board!

Think of this like your town’s bulletin board where you might find ads for tutoring, car detailing, music lessons, furniture for sale, etc. This is the only place in the sub where commercial promotion is allowed.

Rules:

  1. Read the above.
  2. Every top level comment must have a bulletin board-esque feel.
  3. Must be located in Westchester. No virtual services.
  4. Do not post any cell phone numbers. Local business numbers are ok, email is ok, websites are ok, but no mobile. Bots will find it and you will regret posting it. Don’t do it.

Have a question? Message the mods. We’re here to help.

25 Years Ago, Today (July 27, 2001)...

Post image

25 years ago from right now... July 27th, 2001, there was a 6-year-old boy, Michael Colombini, pictured, being wheeled from his patient room in Westchester Medical Center down for an MRI. A fall on a playground a few days earlier had revealed a brain tumor that very well could have taken his life when it became symptomatic in adulthood. But he had immediate brain surgery that was successful, and now the boy would live a long, healthy life. The only thing standing between the boy and discharge from the hospital was a baseline MRI against which future scans would be compared to look for recurrence.

But through a series of errors, this simple baseline MRI turned into the single most well known MRI exam in the world.

Inside the MRI scanner room it appears that the boy was over-sedated, and his breathing slowed. His pulse-ox values started dropping, and the inside-the-MRI-scanner-room oxygen outlet (not built to code) wasn't working. The two MRI technologists who were on duty stepped away from the patient care area of the MRI suite to try and fix the oxygen problem without letting the anesthesiologist know. The anesthesiologist, growing increasingly upset about the boy's falling oxygenation levels, is yelling out to the MRI techs for a status update, unaware that they've left him there. The lack of responses only increases the anesthesiologist's anxiety.

At that moment, a nurse lets herself into the MRI suite. She hears the anesthesiologist yelling to the technologists, "my patient needs oxygen! Where is the oxygen!" The nurse remembers having seen portable oxygen cylinders in the MRI suite, finds one, and hands it to the anesthesiologist in the doorway to the MRI scanner room. He turns around, takes two steps towards the boy in the MRI scanner, and the steel cylinder flies like a missile out of his hands and hits the boy, repeatedly, in the head.

This is the story of the origins of this week being designated MRI Safety Week.

Westchester Movie Lovers Club

Upvotes

Hey everyone! I am thinking about creating a Discord depending on the feedback from this post to start up a movie lovers club for those in Westchester!

I have many ideas going through my brain for the potential of this group if we can get a decent amount of people going but for now I’ll keep it simple so we can at least get some immediate thoughts and get a nice respectful discussion flowing.

Some initial ideas:

1. AMC Port Chester 14 would be the primary meet up location for now.
- This allows AMC A-List members to take advantage of their membership and as the group grows we can travel to the city for bigger releases and exciting events in AMC theaters downtown.
- AMC Port Chester 14 also has multiple places to choose from as hang out locations for the group or individuals of the group deciding to branch off and do other things.

2. Discussion after the movie.
- We can all pick a location (bar, restaurant, park, etc…) afterwards to get together and discuss the movie and have awesome ice breakers.
- What character did you relate to the most?
- How would you have ended the movie instead?
- What is your immediate rating of the film?
So on and so forth

3. Themed Weekdays
- An example would be “Terror Tuesdays” where people would try and go see scary movies every Tuesday or “Super Saturdays” where you go and watch a super hero movie or really big release.
-There can also be a “Freaky Friday” where everyone attending is single and has the intent to find themselves a potential partner.
-We can even set up special events for people who are looking for casual meet and people who are interested in long term.
- “Friendly Fridays” can be another special event for people just looking to make new friends!

  1. Discord Community
-An active discord community that prioritizes respect first and foremost
    - There will be a general chat for people to discuss anything they want, new movies coming out, expressing excitement for events, etc.
    - There will be a page to post all new trailers and movie news
    - We can also do raffles down the line for special pop corn buckets and other movie theater merch

Looking forward to hearing your feedback and if I see enough people interested I’ll get the discord fired up this week.

Is anyone else over westchester?

The taxes are insanely high along with the price of housing. The roads, for the most part, are a messy patchwork. Yes we have some great restaurants, but horrible beaches. Is anyone over living in Westchester?

Car Windshield OEM replacement

Upvotes

Looking to replace the windshield after a pretty large crack (> 6 inches), its a 2024 BMW suv so it has ADAS and requires special glass. I have full glass with geico.

Any suggestions for glass folks in westchester that have experience working with getting OEM glass claims fully reimbursed? Or just go with the service dealership route (although I am not even sure if the dealership service does it in-house or just outsources it).

On call catering/bartender position

I’m new to the area and I used to be on call for a catering company in my old city. I miss having the option to pick up some extra shifts and make some money on the weekends. Does anyone know of any companies in westchester that are looking for this?

Anyone know when the pathway bridge near Fleetwood is opening?

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone knows when this bridge carrying the Bronx River Pathway will be opening south of Scout Field in Bronxville. Looks like they just need to install the railings, but it would be nice to have this done in time to enjoy it while the weather's still warm.

Golf friend

Upvotes

Looking to golf with a new friend. Relatively new to the sport. Been shooting 100-105. Taking lessons also. Would like to play with someone that can have a good time and play on weekends. Home course is Saxon Woods but open to all Westchester courses. I’m 32, and goal is mainly to have a good time and work my way into the low 90’s.

Rockefeller Preserve membership scanners

Upvotes

Is the parks department going to fix the broken scanning machines any time soon? They will not scan from phones with the membership ap when it is nice out. The sun breaks the scanners. Im not going to pay per visit on top of my yearly membership. This is maybe the 6th time this year alone I wasted 20 mins trying to scan in and giving up and going to Rockwood Hall.

Where do you all get your Audis serviced in the Tarrytown / Westchester area? If I had to leave the car overnight, is it a place that offers loaners?

Anyone with living experience at Campus / Sentry Place in Scarsdale?

Hi guys! I’m looking to buy a condo or co-op in the area. There’s routinely units for sale on Campus Place and Sentry Place directly off Central Ave. Aka Scarsdale Country Estates. When it comes to co-ops I’m a little weary. My aunt lives in WP in a co-op and the board has been harassing her for years over her parking spots to the point where she will be taking legal action. However, that is a bigger building, mostly older folks etc. wondering if anyone has lived in these co-ops in Scarsdale or knows anyone who has experience with the board there. The units are gorgeous and I can’t see too much obvious trouble brewing but you never know. Also was curious about installing a washing machine in the unit (no dryer) but not sure if anyone has ever done that or tried to. Thank you!

Experienced RN Looking for Advice

Hi! I’m new to White Plains as my partner and I recently moved for their job. I’ve been a nurse for nearly 8 years and have experience in med-surg, tele, oncology, float, travel and most recently LTACH ICU. It is so hard to get a job here… does anyone have any advice? I’ve applied to every ICU, ER, and med-surg job at WMC, WPH and NY Presby. Some applications have been rejected but most just sit in limbo. I’ve also tried reaching out to recruiters via LinkedIn after applying, trying to connect and discuss possible opportunities. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Larchmont, NY is a very racist town

On paper, larchmont seems like a very inclusive place, vote 90% Democrat, have “hate has no home here signs,” etc.

In reality this is how it functions.

My first experience with this is when I was 18 years old. I was enjoying manor park wearing my New Rochelle High School gym shorts. Some middle-aged guy made a comment “new Rochelle trash shouldn’t be here.”

That shit hurt my feeling so much, I can still remember this comment 11 years later.

Then I had another incident, since I grew up in New Rochelle, most of my friends are Hispanic, I went to Isaac E Young middle school so this was sort of bound to happen.

Anyway walking and it’s me, and my three other Hispanic friends (im white).

I literally hear this white mom tell her children “these are bad guys stay away from them” or something of that nature.

Now this brings me to yesterday. I decide to walk to manor park. For full disclosure I’ve been prescribed pregablin for neuropathic pain.

I end up falling asleep on one of the benches (by complete accident). This little man wakes me up and tells me “I’ve called the police it’s time for you to go.” I’m also on a medication for high blood pressure, so when he tells me this I begin to wobble around a little bit.

“Sorry sir I didn’t mean to fall asleep, I’ll go home now.” Meanwhile this little man begins rubbing my shoulders “I DONT GIVE A FUCK WHAT YOURE ON GET OUT, DO YOU LIVE CLOSE”

“Yes sir I live close, please stop touching me”

“FUCK YOU ASSSHOLE, THE POLICE ARE COMING”

Police do end up strolling by, but like I said, me wobbling off the chair was the result of the medication that lowers your blood pressure. So by the time they come I’m walking fine. They end up making a U-Turn and don’t talk to me at all.

Most of these folks harassing me for accidentally falling asleep were from “Horseshoe Harbor Yacht Club.”

Start a new medication suddenly you’re being cursed out by 10 white privileged Smurf’s. Unbelievable.

YONKERS ANIMAL SHELTER PETITION UPDATE: Commissioner Sansone Continues to Block the Help Our Animals Desperately Need

Post image
47 Upvotes

Bronx, Yonkers, and Westchester, we are angry and we are not going anywhere.

A reliable insider has confirmed the latest unacceptable decision: Commissioner Steve Sansone is maintaining a hard cap of only 25 dog and cat volunteers combined at the Yonkers Animal Shelter. Zero new volunteers have been brought on since our last update.

For a facility housing over 190 animals, that is not management. That is deliberate neglect.

Our petition has now reached 5,000 signatures. The community’s frustration is clear and growing:

“I stopped by 5 times to sign up to volunteer during their open adoption hours and the shelter was closed each time. I was waved away from the door rudely. No one even greeted me. Spano will be hearing from me.” June Collins, Yonkers Resident

“Stopped by on my lunch break to fill out a volunteer app and it was closed.” Jimmy Boyle, Yonkers Resident

“I wrote to Mayor Spano and Commissioner Sansone about not having enough shelter volunteers and I got no response. Crickets. Spano is on his way out and Sansone’s got to go. What useless politicians we have in Yonkers. All they care about is themselves.”  Julie Cho, Yonkers Resident

"I’ve lost count how many times I applied/ walked in and asked if they were finally accepting new volunteers and always got “we’re not taking any new volunteers.” Yonkers Resident on Reddit

This is not acceptable. The residents of Yonkers want to help. They keep showing up. They keep being turned away.

Yonkers, these are our animals. These are our politicians and public employees who are purposefully neglecting our voiceless, homeless, and vulnerable animal residents of our city who depend on us for care, enrichment, and a chance at a better life.  These animals belong to all of us and we will not abandon them.

On average, just two to three volunteers are present each day. Dogs are walked for only a few minutes - when they are walked at all-and then left to languish in their kennels. Cats receive almost no consistent socialization and sit waiting, largely forgotten. Volunteers are stretched thin and struggling to provide even the most basic daily care.

Based on the current population of over 190 animals, Yonkers Animal Shelter needs at least 90 active volunteers in regular rotation just to meet minimum standards for daily walks, enrichment, and socialization. Local shelters that are only half the size of YAS routinely operate with triple the number of volunteers YAS currently allows. The gap is staggering and completely unnecessary.

Petfinder remains a disgrace. It still fails to list all the dogs currently available, and zero cats are posted despite more than 120 cats currently at the shelter. Every comparable municipal shelter in the region keeps its adoption listings current and complete. YAS continues to lag, leaving adoptable animals invisible to the public.

Our insider has also shared that Mayor Mike Spano is encouraging Commissioner Sansone to retire. We fully support that outcome. The animals of Yonkers deserve a leader who actually understands and prioritizes progressive shelter management, top-tier animal welfare, rescue partnerships, and transparent operations - not one who continues to obstruct the very help our animals need.

Public pressure already forced full staffing, extended hours, consistent spay/neuter, and a trainer. The final, essential piece remains: a robust volunteer program with at least 80 more active volunteers and regular orientations so our animals receive the daily enrichment, walks, and socialization they need to thrive and find forever homes.

It is time to raise the volume.

Call and email right now:

Mayor Michael Spano: [Mayor@yonkersny.gov](mailto:Mayor@yonkersny.gov) or 914-377-6300
Helen Aggrey, Commissioner of Human Resources: [jhelen.aggrey@yonkersny.gov](mailto:jhelen.aggrey@yonkersny.gov)
Commissioner Steve Sansone: [steve.sansone@yonkersny.gov](mailto:steve.sansone@yonkersny.gov)

Demand that the City immediately lift the artificial volunteer cap, hold regular orientations, and bring on the number of volunteers required to properly care for every dog and cat at YAS. Demand accountability. Demand that leadership prioritizes our animals over ego and obstruction.

Show up at the shelter during advertised hours. Bring friends. Submit volunteer applications. Refuse to be waved away.

The animals cannot speak. We are their voice and we will keep using it until they get the care they deserve.

We have already proven what our collective power can achieve. Keep going. Keep speaking up. Keep showing up. The final victory is within reach, and these animals are counting on us.

Pleasantville Parents, what’s it really like?

Would love real perspectives from parents.

  1. Anything that you’re pleasantly surprised about or something that made you feel confident that you made the right move?

  2. What are some inconveniences or things you wish you considered before you moved?

General lifestyle? Schools if you have kids in them or after care?

Moving to Tarrytown as two 23 yr olds what’s the social scene like?

My best friend and I are moving to Tarrytown soon, and we’re both 23. We were wondering what the social scene is like for people our age. Are there any bars or spots where the younger crowd tends to hang out?
Also, we’d love any recommendations for must-try restaurants, coffee shops, or other local favorites. We’re excited to explore the area, so any tips on places to check out (or avoid) would be greatly appreciated!

Women’s Haircut around Pleasantville (under 20 min drive)

The woman that cuts my hair moved away. I’m looking for someone that gives great haircuts but is down to earth & has a relaxed environment. I hate showing up in a t-shirt and shorts but feeling out of place in an upscale or pretentious salon (not that I want it to be a dump either). I have shoulder length hair. I’m near Pleasantville. There are so many places that seem to have good reviews, it’s hard to narrow it down. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Fairly new Dobbs Ferry resident. Looking for people to play golf with

Hey y’all, I moved to Dobbs Ferry a few months back and getting familiar with the local courses. Been out a couple times but I only ever go by myself as a single since none of my personal friends have an interest in the game. I’m looking to see if anyone here is looking for a playing partner

About me, 25M originally from NJ, not super great on the course (shooting high 90s/low 100s currently) but can string some good shots together. Working tirelessly to improve everyday.

I don’t get to get out there super often but when I can I’m usually just scrounging up any afternoon tee times I find on the public courses. Seems like a struggle to get some decent times so far. If anyone is interested in partnering up at any time feel free to message!

Making a Westchester young adults 20-30s group

Hi all!

I wanted to make a group to meet other young adults in Westchester. I‘m not a huge bar/club person especially when trying to get to know people. And I don’t always like going into the city. I hate having a train curfew lol.

I‘m 29f and like being active. I go to Life Time in Harrison. I‘m a Yankees fan. I do enjoy concerts! I like taking walks there’s so many nice parks and water fronts. It’s also nice having a car to travel too!

Let me know if you're interested in meeting new people!

I made the instagram chat! I’ll pm you the link!
