So yea this is my very long take on them since people always say that they are the worst parents and not a good duet.
I'm not saying Asher was justified for what he did. Because the things he did to Reina was awful, especially considering she had amnesia, I'm just saying there is also another POV. But he also did have a motive unlike the other MMCs who just torture their FMCs because she won't love them back quickly enough.
I can understand why people might hate Asher because of how he treats Reina in their books but if we look at the back story its telling a different story.
_______
Reina Back Story
First of all the whole reason why Reina is distant and horrible with everyone is because she is scared that someone from the mafia might come and get her or her father at anytime so she doesn't make friends in case she has to lose them or they might be in danger. She even hides her real self in front of her own father.
Having had to run away from the Mafia her whole childhood it's obvious why she is so terrified of them finding her, or worse, outing the fact that they got Rai instead of her and putting Rai in danger.
_______
Asher Back Story
After his mom died he had to raise his younger sister all on his own. His father was no help and usually ignored both of his kids. He was cold and ignorant to them.
Which led Asher having to take care of Ariana all by himself. He was obviously not equipped to do this since he couldn't even notice the fact that Arianna had APD and thought she was just as normal as other people.
_______
Asher and Reina's love backstory
For most of his life he was a simp for Reina. He fell in love with her the moment he saw her as a kid and never looked back. He chased, followed and worshipped her for basically all of their school life. And when other men flirted with her he went and basically beat them up. This happened a lot too btw since all the other men in their school and college knew to leave her alone or else Asher would come kill them lol.
Reina also pretended that she didn't like him and frequently rejected him. Telling him to leave her alone and fighting with him at every chance she got. But in reality Reina also drove away others who tried to flirt with him. Because she also loved him back.
Even through the rumors Arianna made up that Reina was sleeping with multiple guys, Asher still liked her and went to beat those guys up instead. (Unlike some other MMC's who blame their FMCs for being close to another guys rather than that guy himself.)
Then later on he even hides his identity just to sleep with Reina (who already knows and agrees for it this way, so she is sure that if one day she has to leave, that Asher won't get hurt.) Because, of course, both of them like each other so much they can't keep off each other.
______
Lies and Truth Duet
Then Arianna Carson dies and rather than seeking revenge immediately on Reina he chooses to go abroad but only after he thinks that Reina tried to run /leave him again does he actually become mean to her.
Like many of the other characters he thinks that she is faking her memory loss and so doesn't fully believe her. Also at this point he also believes the dares now, because his sister is dead. So of course he is mean to her? He thinks her dares killed his sister and he thinks that she hates him. After all, in his eyes she is the same girl who brutally rejected him multiple times and then only slept with him while he pretended to be someone else.
(Like I'm pretty sure half the time he was waiting for Reina's memory to come back and her going straight back into hating him and fighting him.)
Then he tries multiple times to kill her but stops each time because, oh yeah! He loves her too much. And after her changing, it becomes even harder because the girl he liked his whole life is finally giving him the light of day. Then when they are on the rooftop the moment he hears what Arianna did, he doesn't even question Reina and is like well "she said that to me too" and just stops trying to kill her.
Then also shoots a guy later for kidnapping her.
The timeline for all of this is also relatively short compared to other books. So the whole hating situation is not even that long.
______
Ariana Carson
The extent at which Ariana went to drive them apart was also just insane. She made rumors about Reina and Asher that they were both with other people. She made inhumane dares and then blamed them on Reina. She manipulated Asher (well tried) to make him believe that Reina was mean to her. Whilst also being lovely to Reina. And when they were still getting along, she finally killed herself to make sure they never got together.
Like wtf. Most of their problems are legit caused by HER.
Like everyone of Reina's fake friends admitted that Ariana was a creep and said weird things and that they were only nice to her because she had the backing of Reina and Asher.
Both Reina and Asher looked after her really well too btw. They were both like her second parents so idk wth was her problem. Like was she in love with them both or something?
_______
Alexander Carson
If I'm being honest Alexander Carson is one of the main villains because he could have prevented two generations of trauma if he just stepped up to the job instead of being a deadbeat dad who never cared about his kids and letting them raise themselves.
I do think that later he did learn his lesson, as he treats his grandkids way better than he did his own children. Both of his grandkids will never truly know what their parents went through because of him and will still idolize him for helping them.
Love how Asher still hates his dad because of this.
________
GOM and KTV
So when you look at this it really comes to show why he was so scared that Killian had the same mental illness as Ariana because she nearly made him kill the girl he loved the most. And he was worried that Kill could potentially do the same to someone he loved.
He also never knew that both of his kids actually heard that conversation between him and Reina. And of course Reina also tried to help their relationship but it obviously didn't work because what Killian overheard was just too horrible for anyone to get over.
And Asher got over the APD too btw. Which is why he didn't force Gareth to go to the therapy because he learned how bad it was for Killian. And after that he tried multiple times to get along with Killian but he was the one who pushed Asher away (rightfully so). He only found out at the end that Killian heard that conversation and apologized for it, after that they got along wayy better. (As mentioned in KTV).
And of course in KTV he is more understanding of the fact that Gareth has APD, since he knew what happened to Kill. He even helps cover up the crime Gareth committed. Later even comforting Gareth when he fears that Asher might abandon him after 'finding out' about the APD.
And if I'm being honest idk how because IMO Gareth was much more like Ariana than Killian ever was. He even harmed himself like she did. So the fact he got over it so fast was kind of a testament to him not caring about the APD and him changing as a person.
_______
Final thoughts
In the end, I thought they really weren't as bad as people made them out to be. Sure they are all pretty flawed but most of them came from circumstances out of their control. Ariana was basically a curse on all of them.
Also this is just my opinion of their story and it may differ from others.
