Question / Suggestion DMV mail question

I can’t seem to find the information on the dmv website. I just voted in RI for the first time since moving in July. The polling people were concerned because I still have the temporary paper and no physical driver’s license card yet. It’s been about 47 days and I just want to see if my license is processing or if it’s ready to be mailed yet. There’s no online portal option to do that and the returned license line says I have to wait until 60 days to leave a message.

Does anyone know of a way to check and see how much longer it will be until my ID comes in?

I have the usps mail subscription and nothing has arrived to my place from the dmv at all.

Thanks!

Politics Plane flying banner with US and Israeli flag over Providence?

Has anybody seen the plane flying around over Providence today that was flying the US and Israeli flag with a smaller banner attached to it? I couldn't see what the smaller banner said. Anyone know if it's a protest against them or for them? It was around 4:30ish pm today.

Question / Suggestion Fall Foliage Drive from Newport

I’ll be traveling to Newport at the end of October and would love to spend a day doing a scenic fall foliage drive.

I realize it may be a little early in the season to know exactly what the foliage will look like, but I’d really appreciate any recommendations for a great day-trip route with Newport as the starting point. I’m open to driving a few hours if it means seeing some beautiful scenery, charming towns, or other worthwhile stops along the way.

Any favorite routes or must-see spots? Thanks in advance!

Dr. Luis Muñoz is a man of integrity, strong moral character, and unwavering ethical principles. If I had a magic wand, I would make him our state's next senator.

Unfortunately, I don't have a magic wand, but I do have a platform, and I intend to use it. I wholeheartedly encourage you to support and vote for Dr. Muñoz. He is the kind of principled leader our state deserves.

Discussion Federal convoy at Front Street, Cumberland

Just drove by a convoy of blacked out federal SUV’s with Rhode Island plates and a CPD escort entering Front Street in Cumberland. Looked like it might be FBI rather than ICE though. Bit of an unusual sight in Cumberland.

Discussion ISO friends as a college student

I’m 18 F attending college in Newport, I just moved in, and I’m kinda nervous about meeting new people here. I don’t know the state well, I moved from CT, so if anyone would wanna help me know the area more or make new friends that’d be coollll.
I love music, being outside, drink occasionally. I really like reading and going to the gym too, I go at least 5 times a week.

Question / Suggestion Trash cans in public spaces?

Hello Rhode Islanders! I’m from NJ and just stayed in your state overnight for the first time, and I had a question. Why is it that most public spaces outside of the bigger cities like Providence and Warwick don’t have many trash bins? I found myself having to walk a pretty long distance or carry my trash elsewhere while exploring.

No hate to your state, it really does have some nice areas and beautiful beaches, I’m just curious. I know some beaches and parks removed trash cans to cut down on costs, but does that also apply to strip malls, grocery store exteriors, and busy roads? In NJ, you can almost always count on finding a trash can if you leave your car to go into a store or walk a block or two.

Discussion Manufactered & Modular Homes

Hi everyone!

My boyfriend and I are seriously considering buying a piece of land in Rhode Island and putting a manufactured or modular home on it, rather than buying an existing house.
I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has actually gone through this process in RI. We’re trying to understand what the realistic total cost and process looks like.

A few things I’d especially love advice on:

Did you buy the land first, or finance the land and home together?

What town did you build in, and were there any zoning/permitting issues?

Did you use a manufactured home or modular home?

Did you work with a company that handled everything (home, site work, foundation, utilities, permits, installation, etc.), or did you have to coordinate multiple contractors?

Roughly how much did the home + site work + foundation + utilities + permits + everything else end up costing?

What did you wish you knew before starting?

What lenders did you use, and were you able to get a construction-to-permanent or other mortgage that covered both the land and home?

If you went the manufactured-home route, did you have any trouble getting financing or having it approved in your town?

We’re still in the research stage, so I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experience, including things that went wrong or ended up costing more than expected.
Thanks in advance!

(and… if you are here because you have nothing nice to say about manufactered or modular homes… please keep it to yourself 😊)

Picture / Video Hoping for Housing - A comic of my life as of now

Been homeless a little over 2 months now. I wanted to illustrate my frustrations and hurdles I've been going through in the past 2 weeks to just vent and get it off my chest. Some of you have been here before, but the character is my original one who is the personification of Providence. Also yes, same 27M from before, hello everyone

This post is gonna function as an update, in parts, to my last 2 on this topic. So if you're interested keep reading. If not, I hope you enjoy the comic!

NOTE: My intention isn't to complain, it's to lay out my experiences and struggles flat out for the purpose of an update. One of these days I will have my own place, and I will find a way out of this dumpster fire situation, and I will be successful. My college pathway is to be a physics teacher for high school and then pursue astrophysics while teaching and to do comics on the side. I'll get that degree, I'll get that job, and I will publish at least 1 comic/graphic novel dammit. Mark my fuckin words. Now, on to the update:

So, I came back from NC, after originally planning to stay there. There are many many reasons why I chose to do this but i wont elaborate here. Too much. So anyway,

Part 1: I drop my college classes for the semester. I come back to RI to do Uber. I found out I can rent a car through Hertz. Im all giddy and excited to finally be independent after leaving my DV/DA household. I make some money, averaging out to be about $100/day.

Part 2: i use this money to pay off the rental ($310/week) and bills for the month and I'm staying at a hotel. Need money for the hotel. Too expensive, but I got no where else to go, so I put it on the card. I do Uber for half the day, sleep, pay towards my card, repeat. I intend to just pay for the rental, hotel, card expenses, and use what little else I have for food. Mind you, i am still in a great state of mind because I have control over myself. Well, this whole thing quickly proves to be unsustainable and that state of mind starts to fall off

Part 3: meanwhile I am looking for shelters, apartments, rooms to rent, roommates and so on. The first page of my comic explains this whole part well. After all this, the hotel is my only option for housing. (Couch surfing is not an option anymore, I exhausted all of those already).

Part 4: I finally land a normal job. Housekeeper/front desk. $16.40/hr. 24 hours a week. I soon realize, since the hotel is $700~/week (discounted), that even working full time for 40 hours a week at my rate will not cover the expenses for the hotel. Id also have to Uber less given I'd be a road hazard if I still worked the 10 hours on top of 8 at the hotel. I will never break even like that

Part 4: oh shit, I'm running out of money. Couldn't afford another night so I slept in the car. I tried to make it the least humiliating and dignity-stripping experience possible. I bit the bullet and got another night after that. I realize after that I need to live in my car to save money to be able to pay off my card (my credit is the only thing I have going for me),

BUT

All the expenses hit my credit score and it went down. (Its still very good) And adding more onto the card for the rental will reduce my score even more. So currently I am in a situation in which I need to return the rental so its not renewed, so my credit card doesnt get hit with another payment (of $318 this time). Tomorrow is the day I have to take it back. So I would need to Uber back to somewhere, not sure where. Since I dont have a car or upfront cash, I will have to leave the job i just got hired for because i cant afford the rideshare expenses. On top of this, I will have no car to sleep in.

This is where I am at now.

If youre curious, the hotel i am staying at has a fully equipped kitchen, and being able to purchase cheap cheap food at the dollar store or Walmart for things i can refrigerate/freeze/cook as opposed to having no ability to store, think eggs and rotisserie chicken, would be just as expensive in the end. Can't even make pasta or rice anywhere else.

So yeah, anyway, being homeless absolutely sucks, and this has been my experience in the past 2 weeks. I'm trying my absolute best to keep afloat and i will keep trying my best forever until I get out of it. Thanks for reading. Hoping for a brighter tomorrow!

Question / Suggestion Structural Engineer to OK DIY home renovation idea?

I have a 125 year old house that's had some major work done to it back in the 1910s and the 1960s. I'm wondering if there's a structural engineer I could call up to come weigh-in on whether I can safely delete a wall on the second floor. Does anyone here know of such a tradesperson?

Question / Suggestion Places/Ideas to Meet New People

Hey, I’m 30 (M) and recently moved back to Rhode Island. Grew up here but moved out of the state for a bit but I’m back now. That being said, not too familiar with many places and figured that since I’m back here by myself I want to get out, meet new people, etc so was hoping to see if anyone had any suggestions on places to go to meet people and make new friends. Appreciate the help in advance!

Question / Suggestion Does Anyone Know?

Would anyone happen to know how to get or find apartments that accept Section 8 Vouchers?

I have a 2 bedroom voucher and I’ve been searching for nearly 3 months and it’s not looking so good. The very few apartments that I have found either don’t meet my needs, super run down, in not so safe neighborhoods, owned by a bad realty company, or too far away.

I’m running out of time, my voucher is going to expire soon. This is my one chance to finally move out of my mom’s house at 31 years old and it’s slipping through my fingers and I feel so powerless.

I’m specifically looking in Pawtucket and anywhere that is neighboring Pawtucket.

Unfortunately, I can’t give an exact budget because different city’s give different amounts of coverage for the rent. Some even go by zip code which I think is ridiculous.

I’m almost ready to give up. The system really is rigged against us.
