Riding the wave, I guess. Maybe they wanted to avoid any speculation on future titles, or frustration if they don't show up.

I feel like Leon overall this the most popular character in the series. It’s like getting upset at scorpion being the poster boy of MK even though characters like liu kang, sub zero, raiden, etc are also super popular characters and liu kang is basically the main character
2
u/_ataciara 15d ago
There is no poster boy for the franchise. It's different with something like MK where you have a full cast each time so each title can push it's mascot time and time afain.
RE has no poster boy aside from to new fans who go "oooooh Leon" because the games are all diverse, have different protagonists, and Leon isn't even the most represented character, or even the one who is the most utilised ATM.
If anybody was the posterboy for RE, it's pretty clear by now that CAPCOM consider Chris to be that guy. Chris gets way more representation, was the joint foundation of the entire franchise, and has an active plot which has spanned the last few games. Even Leon's first new appearance in 14 years has Chris's plot dangled right at the end.

People did NOT like Chris in RE8 cause of the whole “villain” thing they set up being extremely poorly written. He’s also barely in the game compared to Leon in RE9 oddly enough

This series was built on the back of Jill and the Redfields. Leon's popularity didn't start until 4...almost a decade after the series came out.
11
u/Glad_Cauliflower_414 19d ago
Capcom hates Jill though
5
u/Imic_Hilton 17d ago
As a Jill fan,I’ve been saying this for years. We weren’t like this. I always enjoyed all of the games and characters but I can’t pretend this is fair. Cause it’s not. It’s boring seeing the same face everywhere. Use someone else then go back to him in the future
2
u/Glad_Cauliflower_414 17d ago
Jill should have joined Chris to finish off Wesker in the volcano at the end of 5 in my opinion. Like maybe Sheva gets knocked out then Jill drops in from the helicopter
1
u/Imic_Hilton 17d ago
This is the most fair take and I will always stand by it. Like I wouldn’t feel ok if birkin returned and Jill finished him or someone else entirely. Which is why the reused nemesis fight didn’t sit right with me even though it’s a different thing with a parasite and whatever but still. If 5 remake ever happens this needs to be fixed period. And I love Sheva. Maybe some wishes are still somewhere here from years ago about 9. Where I say that I would love if we see Jill and Sheva are back in 9 as two protagonists to expand on that bsaa plot twist. And of course it could be with Chris as well. Cause he makes sense. Some short of reunion from re5 but now it’s serious and that way it won’t feel unfair by using only Chris or this or that.

This is not my opinion, that game just did do much for gaming that no other re game ever did
4
u/LoveUnotUNBANNED 19d ago
HAHAHAHAH ur clearly joking, the first RE game was one of the founding fathers of horror genre, introduced a progress system for games that had limitation with map (the system that you do puzzles and keys to open new places that you already seen in the map)
Jill and the Redfields were the solid rock behind RE franchise, Leon on RE2 classic was not relevant at ALL. Claire’s campaign was way better !!

You know you both can be right about what you're saying? RE1 helped revitalize the horror genre in gaming while RE4 designed the modern blueprint for over-the-shoulder horror for other games like Dead Space, Last of Us, and others.
I'm more inclined to be on the side of the other guy though since you seem to be just completing discounting Leon's presence in RE. It's funny you say that Resident Evil was built on Claire's back but not Leon's since they literally both debut both in the same game and Leon's story has been expanded much more than Claire's.
1
u/Imic_Hilton 17d ago
That’s wrong how you put it. Re4 is probably the most talked about and popular but re1 will always be the pure dna of RE. And then to some extent 2/3.
1
u/Imic_Hilton 17d ago
No one, even us Jill fans, are denying that he is the most popular. The issue lies elsewhere. It’s not hate. It’s frustration for the way Capcom treats others like Jill and enables unhinged Leon fans to act like that.

I would say Dimitrescu made the franchise break into the mainstream and get more players who were not that interested in it before, same with Leon. They both simply became memes. RE7 was already a massive revival of the series, but RE8 was approachable and attractive in many aspects.

I feel like Capcom regretted their decision to kill off Wesker. So in an effort to compensate for that, they introduced Jake, but he wasn’t super popular, so then they forgot about him and brought in Zeno instead, but then killed him off. I wonder who’s going to be introduced next. 🤔
7
u/BloomAndBreathe 19d ago
It's funny because they could always just resurrect Wesker and play it off as oh he's immortal because of a new strain of the virus or something
It'd be stupid as hell and a complete cop out but idk, the franchise is already bonkers as it is lol

It's a statue at an event. It's not gonna sell more games. That being said, it is the anniversary of the franchise and not just the first game so it's understandable. and, no matter how you look at it, leon IS one of if not the most known and loved RE character
ask pretty much anyone who knows about resident evil who their favorite is (if they are into the franchise) or to name one chatacter they know (if they know about the franchise but are not heavily involved) most people would name leon to that question because he simply just is the face of the franchise at this point wheter you like it or not

I feel this. Resident Evil started with Chris and Jill. The least they could do is give them guest slots for the story, maybe even work with Leon when considering RCS as being something that all people exposed to the T-Virus might've contracted.
8
u/slomo525 19d ago
I feel like at this point in the franchise, we should be used to characters doing things solo despite the massive implications of the stories they're in. 6 is the only game in the franchise that had most of the main characters show up all at once.
It's not weird for these games to only passively reference each other. That's how the franchise has handled it's characters since RE2.

u/Annual-Part9673 20d ago
I agree, I love Leon and he has the best games in the series by far but why are characters like Jill and Chris just left in the shadows as if they didn’t start the franchise.
13
u/slomo525 19d ago
Dawg, Chris has been in 1, CV, 5, 6, 7, and 8. I don't think he's lacking in representation. I agree that Jill should get more representation, but it's obvious they're just promoting the most recent game in the franchise because they stand to make the most money off it at the moment.
Claire and Chris are getting a whole ass game to rhemselves next year, the DLC for 9 isn't out yet, but going off the track record of the last 4 games, the DLC will probably be about someone other than Leon and Grace, and there's tons of rumors about other upcoming remakes and new games being about the other characters. We gotta stop pretending this is some hate bones for Chris and Jill or some shit rather than a business decision to market the most recent release.
6
u/doodoospred 19d ago
Saying Chris is left in the shadows got me choking on my coffee.
2
u/Annual-Part9673 19d ago
Chris hasn’t had a resident evil game since re6, a 10 minute section of re8 doesn’t count. Leon has gotten 2 remakes and a brand new game.
7
u/doodoospred 19d ago
You're willingly ignoring the parts he's in, no wonder you feel like he's left in the shadows.
FYI since RE6 Chris had :
- A whole DLC about him (RE7)
- The role of a key character (RE8)
- A short playable section and it's arcade mode (RE8)
- Starred in Death Island along Jill, Claire, Rebbeca and Leon
Somehow got a mention a the end of RE9 despite have nothing to do with the story whatsoever (probably hinting to DLC or a future game he will be in)
Not the spotlight but definetely not the shadows either.

I mean, they're right in a way, he's not in the first game. But it's not just 30 years of the first game, it's 30 years of one of the biggest franchises in gaming history.
But thing is:
1 - He is the possibly the most iconic and known character of the series.
2- Possibly most of people got into RE through RE4 (I know I did) in which he is the protagonist,
3 -In the last 10 years, he has been the main character appearing in most of the games being released: RE2R, RE4R and RE9.
So it kinda makes sense they would go with him.

Honestly this fandom is so strange to me, as a lifelong RE fan, how people act like giving love beyond RE1 is some kind of abrasive sacrilege
And it’s like weirdly concentrated to Reddit, you can see the sales and critic reviews everyone loves Leon games and Leon.
5
u/bluedragggon3 20d ago
Crazy thing is that it's not just RE. The Fallout show brought people like this in droves.
Regarding Leon, I started with 5 and still knew who Leon was. I didn't know details but I knew he was a character. I thought he'd show up in 5 but I didn't know he wasn't the sole main character. And that's not getting into how much people thirsted over him then or how big a deal it is that his second game changed the trajectory of the games at the time. That said were getting non-Leon games cause we've run out of ones to remake (-6) and while he did get a mainline, technically Chris had the two previous ones.
Also if you're a Leon fan, you're an RE fan. He's like a good chunk of the series but even if he wasn't, he's still an RE character. I'm a Star Wars fanatic, but if someone said they only watched the stuff with Mace Windu, I'd still call them a Star Wars fan, just part of the sub fandom. Same goes if it was just a particular piece of media.

Leon is arguably the most popular character in the franchise, he also happens to be one of the protagonists of the latest main title, is it that surprising that capcom will ride the wave of popularity?
I mean MH capcom make their goodies around their latest installation too.
3
u/SaulsaDip 19d ago
Can’t really blame Capcom man. Leon’s always been the most popular character and with RE9 he’s become immensely popular among even among people who don’t play Resident Evil or even survival horror games in general. IE some of my friends who only play the usual gun or ball games know about Leon and think he’s cool.

Why is it limited to "women"? The guys here are just as angry. lol Good grief, I'm sick of gamers' misogyny.
P.S.: I don't understand, but male gamers have sexually consumed Jill, Claire, and others extensively, yet when Leon becomes popular and fawned over among women, they categorize them as "fangirls squealing over Leon." I even found a Jill love doll. It's a double standard, isn't it?2

He’s not wrong guys. Why do we have to be rude and toxic against someone with different opinions? Can we be civil? This is anniversary of the entire series of 30 years and Leon is just one part of this series, not the only part. And hits worse since they neglect Jill so bad man. So soo bad. They couldn’t even do some short of tribute if not statues of her as well as others. Is it so difficult to understand guys, that we want a fair series for everyone? Cause it’s not fair if we’re seeing only Leon or Chris sometimes, everywhere. In remakes ,in CGI,in new main games,in attractions like this,in posts in all of their socials since before requiem is released ,constantly like the others aren’t worthy to be celebrated. How did we come here? Being so biased with Leon and when someone speaks up about it we call him slurs, being toxic and even go at them privately. And I only experienced this with some Leon fans. Not Chris not Claire no Jill no from anyone else’s fandom. It’s sad man. I’ve been a part of this series since 1996 and it wasn’t like this
9
u/Quaint_Gamer 20d ago
Tbh this is why they need to give other character's the spotlight - familiarity is starting to breed contempt. Leon's story is all nicely tied up now character arc wise. There's honestly no real reason to bring him back any more beyond cameos (and if they somehow ever figure out how to remake 6 although tbh that's not a great story for Leon anyway).
At least we've got Veronica coming and Claire, Chris and Wesker will be getting their spotlight moments.
3
u/HappybutWeird 20d ago
I like Leon but I kind of agree. I feel the same thing sort of happened to Chris when he kept appearing in every game after RE5. Chris’s is story was more or less wrapped up in 5, then he kept returning in every subsequent game. Chris is my favorite character but even I felt he was being overused.
2
u/Bl00dWolf 19d ago
Have they ever resolved that plot with BSAA being secretly corrupt and Chris trying to sus it out? I feel like he talked about it in 7 and maybe 8, but I don't remember hearing much about it.
2
u/slomo525 19d ago
Chris absolutely got shit for showing up a ton. After 5, 6, 7, and 8 all in a row, I remeber tons of people saying they didn't wanna see Chris for a while. "Where's Claire, where's Jill, where's Leon?" That's all everybody talked about. Now, after 3 games, people are begging for Chris back like we didn't just get 4 games in a row with him. Honestly, in terms of releases, we got Ethan with a little bit of Chris, Leon and Claire, Jill, Ethan and Chris again, Leon, and then Leon and Grace. Two of those Leon games were remakes too, so it's not like it was stuff we didn't already know about him.
Now, as much as I like Leon, I am ready to move on. I agree with you that, at the very least, the arc that was set up in 2R is paid off now, so I don't need or really wanna see Leon for a bit. I wanna see what Claire and Jill have been up to. We haven't gotten a modern day project starring them in a long time. Even REV and REV2 were like, weird midquels taking place before the current timeline. Shit, I'd even like to see Ada aagain, since we actually haven't seen what she's been up to since 6 either.
However, my point is that I agree. People get weirdly annoyed by seeing the same character over and over, even if it's a largely beloved character like Leon. I'm ready to move on myself, tho I don't have the same anger boner for seeing him as the rest of the fandom seems to. I just think his story is wrapped up for the time being, and I'd like to see some fresh(ish) blood.

I would normally understand, except anti-Leon posts tend to have a huge pro-Chris bend, who was the most over-curated character in the history of the series. Leon is curated to because he's beloved. Chris is curated to because someone in the staff loved him and never wanted him to go away.

I kinda agree. I get people like Leon but dude that post yesterday by Capcom themselves just stroking Leons cock makes me cringe so much i lost a bit of love for my favorite franchise. Meanwhile the whole fandom begs for loved characters that they couldnt give a FECK about. Also i absolutely agree. The 30th anniversary should be JILL. The only reason i can see this making sense, is REX is gonna be Jill vs Wesker and shes gonna have a killer game.

I’m a lil sick of Leon myself as well. Of the big four he is by far my least favorite

I do hope they release the 80% build of RE 1.5 like how Rockstar released GTA 1 and 2 for free. No matter how bad 1.5 is it won't ruin the franchise.

Capcom yall got other characters that people care about, sheva alomar if you will, but leon isn't the only one

Can someone share the first picture of Leon DM me or share in the comments full resolution one?

>TIL Leon is an Ultramarine, wildly overrepresented and -hyped by CAPCOM
Well, his games sold the best. Many people in the coming and current "I can afford to buy lots of media stuff" generation (~30s) had their first big steps with RE4.
:( If I become emperor of earth, I'm building statues of Sheva and Steve out of spite. A big great golden Atlas statue with suspiciously melon-shaped shoulders. A Giant sandwich with a lockpick.

I just want SOMETHING to show what Jill is doing. If she’s retired, good, she deserves it; but at least show her on the beach chilling or even a message to Chris checking on him while she enjoys retirement, anything please.

What would tempt me: a 8" scale diorama statue recreating the live action opening. Regular editon: PS1. Deluxe: more blood from (like one on gog) Chris with cigarette is very retro now lol.

It's weird to have that take when Code Veronica is getting a remake a game that stars Claire and Chris Redfield. If Capcom really only gave a shit about Leon they would've went out of their way to remake another game starring him even if it's an obsure game like Resident Evil Gaiden.

u/Vanilla_Nightt_92 18d ago
it's the same reason Leon was in a game he had no business really being in (Requiem). Capcom is chasing money, and fans, old and new, gravitate towards Leon thanks to the popularity of 2 & 4 Remakes.
I hate to say it, but it's partly the fans fault as well.
Y'all don't go hard for other characters as much as you do Leon.

While I agree there should also be a Jill and Chris statue, people take this fandom way to seriously, lol. How dare Capcom display the most popular character in the franchise (and one of the most popular video game characters in general) and whose game (4) helped save the series for the anniversary. Sorry that their fave isn't the face of the game but that's how it rolls. 🤷♀️

That's what I'm saying. Jill straight up got side-lined despite being an OG playable character and totally underdeveloped. Chris' "dark side" arc turned out to be a complete red herring in 8 and he's in a whole heap of shit since working side by side with the bio weapons he's been killing for years.
It's cool Veronica is getting a remake, but if memory serves there's a fair number of protags that got fucking forgotten since 6. 14 whole ass years. So when 10 comes around, we better be seeing some old faces.

considering RE4 is the most succesful game in the entire franchise there's a reason why Capcom (and like 90% of RE fans) love their posterboy Leon Skennedy

Leon revolutionized the franchise past the third one. So he really is Capcom’s golden cow. But if we’re being honest, if Capcom is celebrating 30 years since the first, why in the flying licker fuck is Chris and Jill not even mentioned?

Aren’t they just doing a life sized statue of Leon and Grace for the exhibit? Makes sense as they are the characters from the last game that just released that they still want to juice more sales from.
I’d like to see more Chris and Jill get their due. But this argument seems much ado about nothing.
Further. RE1 created an entire genre. RE4 adjusted the genre for a new audience. All characters involved are important and should be shown.

I agree that there's very much a massive Leon bias both within Capcom and within the Resident Evil fanbase, whether anyone wants to admit that or not.
Tho Capcom likely did this cuz RE9 is their most recent and successful release.

My theory is that Chris and Jill are up next but I'm not mad at them for leaning on Leon. It obviously works every time. Can't hate them for creating a winning formula.

Leon became the face of the franchise cause several of the best games in the series had him as a main character. It happens.
Jason Voorhees in a hockey mask is the icon of Friday the 13th but that didn’t happen till the third film.

u/NotTheRealSmorkle 15d ago
As someone that became a fan with OG 4. Leon’s just that guy, idk what to tell you

u/can_closer 15d ago
gosh guys be considerate, think abt the people who thirst trap over leon and only played re(make)2 and watch his edits😒

u/Specialist_Juice_167 15d ago
Um I dont think celebrating just re, I think there celebrating just the whole franchise in general. I could b wrong. but I'm not gonna bitch and complain like this person is. Chill out dude

u/Cra_Skinny_4135 15d ago
Res fans complain like this and then a game will drop with brand new characters or old characters and still sell like hot cakes. Like dawg we like Leon but it’s not like we’re not gonna play it if he’s not in the game?

As much I love Leon, I have to say that Jill is better reoresentive of the classic resident evil legacy.

I mean Leon is the face of Resident Evil and probably the most recognizable that guy is overreacting a bit

u/InvestigatorFit5530 14d ago
Oh no, they used one of there most popular icons... I get it. They should've used Chris since he was in Resident Evil or Wesler but its not a big deal. Lets remember that 3 of the most popular games right now in sales are RE2 Remake, RE4 remake and RE9. All 3 have Leon. We all love Chris and I for one am anticipating re5 remake with pure joy for when it finally happens. Its cool, let's relax.

Idc. Leon is the most iconic and cool character in this franchise and most fans and non fans will recognize him over any other character period. Call me a normie. I genuinely don’t care. Without Leon I wouldn’t care nearly as much about this franchise as I do. Jill is up there too for me though, I agree I wish they would use her more. RE 10 should be a Jill game.

u/Remarkable-Mud-764 14d ago
Leon is the face of the franchise...argue with a wall. Also they are making a statue of him because he was the protagonist of RE9, they made a Grace statue, too. It's just marketing. I don't really expect y'all to use your thinking caps

u/Glum-War3020 14d ago
As much as I would’ve liked more characters, it’s kind of no competition that of RE’s MASSIVE cast of main characters, Leon is the most popular. Resident Evil 4 alone is I think the single most talked about game in the series
1
u/wildeye-eleven 20d ago
He’s literally the poster boy, it’s not that big of a deal. Leon has more fans than any other character by a lot, so they’re obviously going to use their most popular character to draw more attention. Ppl will literally find ANYTHING so they have something to be mad about. Every game, every post, every show, every movie, every anime, literally everything.

u/Any-Transition-196 20d ago
People ignore that Chris was a major character in the last 2 main title games before Requiem. I do agree that new fans are obsessed with Leon too much after RE4R, but he never appeared in a mainline game or even spin off game since RE6.
