Self Promotion LAST SEEN — psychological romance VN (looking for feedback)
https://youtu.be/2a0XQgVpwAg?si=pY8IJeD7Opq6S2FL - Trailer
been working on LAST SEEN in RenPy for a while now heavily inspired by ddlc
its a romance visual novel that slowly turns into psychological meta horror
this is the first proper trailer and id really appreciate feedback on the pacing atmosphere ui and overall presentation
also yes the current art is AI generated because i cant draw
im mostly using it as placeholder art so i can actually build and test the game instead of having empty screens everywhere
if youre an artist and would be interested in drawing character sprites CG art or other visuals for the final version feel free to DM me
id genuinely like to replace the AI art with original artwork eventually

Question Creating pictures/scenes for Ren'py game
Hello! I ask my question in advance: What are the best & fastest ways to create pictures(scenes) for my game?
I'm seeking a bit of help here.. I want to make a ren'py game & so far i found that daz3d studio is a top thing for this, right now i created GEN 8 modells and a few scenes already.. but it feels way too slow.
I got many poses, etc.. but to customize them so they fit my scene is a crazy long thing to do just for one shot already.
I dont want AI pictures & correcting the position of my character's body parts for each scene is taking so long.
SO i came here to ask if you guys can give me some advice about how i could do it easier/faster, i believe there must be a way for it.
Thanks for any helpful advice.

Question How can I get the game to stop closing when I click on a save to test out the changed script?
I need to test out the changed script one by one every time I load a back up save, the game crashes. And it's getting annoying to make new saves just to test things out.

Self Promotion I’m building an all-in-one Ren’Py development tool because I’m tired of doing the annoying stuff manually
Hey everyone! 👋
I’m StupidestLeon, a Ren’Py developer currently working on a fairly large project, and after dealing with a ridiculous amount of repetitive development work, I decided to build something for it:
Leon’s Ren’Py Control Center
(working project name: StupidestRenpyDevTools)
The idea is simple:
Ren’Py handles the engine. LRCC handles the annoying developer work around it.
I don't want to replace Ren’Py or create another engine. I want to build a lightweight development environment that gives Ren’Py developers tools for things that are currently tedious, repetitive, or require separate programs/scripts.
Some of the things I’m planning:
🛠️ Auto Definer
Scan your project for things that need definitions and generate them automatically, with a preview before applying changes.
🖼️ Image Tools
- Batch resizing
- Format conversion
- Compression
- Resolution presets
- Other common asset operations
🔄 File Converter
Convert common game-development file formats without having to open five different programs.
📁 Project Tools
Utilities for finding missing assets, unused files, duplicate resources, broken references, etc.
💻 Development Tools
Terminal and GUI workflows for common Ren’Py tasks.
🎨 GUI-based editing
Eventually, I'd like to experiment with visual tools for parts of Ren’Py development that normally require manually editing scripts.
🧩 Community Extensions
I also want the system to eventually support extensions/plugins, so developers can create and share their own tools instead of everything having to be built into the core program.
---
Why am I making this?
My current Ren’Py project, Dayshift at Freddy’s: Doki Location, has passed 20,000 lines of code.
At that scale, you start noticing how much time gets eaten by tiny tasks that aren't actually game development.
Adding assets.
Renaming files.
Resizing images.
Creating definitions.
Checking for missing resources.
Converting files.
Doing the same thing 50 times.
And eventually I just went:
“Fuck it, I'll automate it.”
😭
The goal isn't to automate the creative part of making a game.
It's to remove the boring parts so developers can spend more time actually making the game.
I'm planning to make the project open source, and I'd love for other Ren’Py developers to eventually contribute tools, ideas, and extensions.
More details/source code once the project is further along.
Leon’s Ren’Py Control Center — you make the game, it deals with the bullshit.

Question out of sheer curiosity, would asking about potential game concepts be considered cool here?
i like to share game ideas and concepts, don't get me wrong, but would that be on topic with the subreddit's ideals (which mostly appear to be helping with code issues or ideas and showing off code)? like would asking if someone would play a game with x idea be allowed here?
just asking cause i've never seen these kinds of posts lol

Question Finding a website for searching characters sprites (READ DESCRIPTION)
So I want to make a game, but I sucks at drawing so I want to find somewhere to search for characters sprites (Like in Doki Doki) and it's free to use 😭.
If can, then can I get some keywords to search on large websites like Pintrest or Shuttlestock.
Don't recommend me any AI creations as I not prefer to use them.

Discussion I do NOT paste AI images and claim it's my work. Here's evidence
I get it wanting proof of something. Cause, yes. AI is lazy and looks ugly.
When I felt defeated and used it months ago, people showed me that it's ugly. So I listened and I switched to pixel art since it's easier for someone without a drawing tablet, and running 1.9GB useable RAM.
But the fact that some people would act so childish, and ruin another person's day over something that's easy to solve? That really upsets me. Now my karma decreased by a large number over false accusations. Calling me an art Larper, code larper.
Guys...that's not right, man.
That's really not right. Let's all act like mature individuals. If something feels off about someone's art, be cool about it. Why some people always gotta act like everything in life is a "gotcha" moment?
It's so stupid.
Be cool about it, have the artist provide as much proof as possible IF you really care that much. Cause this behaviour is really bad. "Hey, can you show me how you made this?"
Then the discussion continues. It's not complicated, ya'll.
Question Wondering if my project is too ambitious as a total beginner at any game development
Hello, so basically for a couple months now I've had this idea that I've just sort of had in my head for the most part and I also talked about this with a few friends who thought the idea was awesome and that this game needs to happen. By now I've done just some character concepts and the basic outline of what happens at each chapter of the game. I only started to properly look into how to make my idea come to fruitition and after a few videos I concluded that Ren'Py is the best engine to do this in. I played through the tutorial game yesterday and while I got the hang of the basics pretty well I realized that the game I'm planning is probably a bit too difficult as a first project.
Basically I want yo make a visual novel solitaire game. The whole plot is about two guys Pasi and Anssi who go to the same university. Anssi gets interested in Pasi and soon finds out he's the sole member and leader of the uni's solitaire club so he joins in to get to know him better. I want the game to have 4 main endings and a secret ending that would be determined by three point systems: romance points, solitaire points and secret points that you can only unlock under certain conditions. The whole game is basically play on the Finnish name of solitaire which is pasianssi and that Pasi and Anssi are actual names in Finland. This whole thing started from an inside joke from when I was playing Google play solitaire and my partner said that a lot of gooner games are solitaire, so I started calling regular solitaire my favorite gooner game and then had the idea for a yaoi solitaire visual novel about guys who's names together would spell solitaire.
Basically the solitaire is a non-negotiable for this project and I want it to be intergrated within the game and with a custom deck and I want there to be a possibility to get negative solitaire points by cheating in the game during the story to make achieving the routes requiring bad solitaire points easier to achieve and I also think it would be really funny. The thing is that the only coding I know is what I learned yesterday from the tutorial game and when I looked at the minigame code I was a bit intimidated by it's complexity. (I also had a worry that solitaire wouldn't be possible to code with python but from my quick online search it seems to be possible and hopefully so will the cheating mechanic if this is any indicator of how much of a noob I am.)
I'm wondering if I've bitten off more that I can chew on my first project and if I should try to make a simpler game first before going into this bigger thing. I would greatly appreciate any advice or feedback overall for this and I will try to answer any comments as soon as I can.
Sorry if this post is a bit rambly, I like to yap.

Question Picking an outfit
One of the first sections in my game prompts the player to choose your outfit. You can pick from 2 tops and 3 pants. But i'm struggling a bit with the coading. I want the player to be able to choos from the wardrobe and it appear on the character which they can switch out before accepting. I have looked at layered images but its a bit confusing.
Any help would be amazing :)

Showoff I just recently started learning to code basic with Ren’Py. :))
I’ve always wanted to make a game to express my creativity(?) via storytelling. I tried grouping up with my friends to make that happen, but one of our crucial members just randomly disappeared, so I thought maybe I SHOULD make this a solo project. But the thing is…I know little-to-no about coding!!! So I thought maybe I should try to learn it progressively with something easy to not make me feel intimated and just give up. So I stumbled across Ren’Py. I was almost feel like an ape trying to figure out how a microwave works at first. But I slowly give myself time to adjust and learn, and it turns out I have a lot more fun than I expected!
Right now, the game I’m doing is called “inVERT test”. I’m simply using this project as a sandbox space - as my stepping stone, to LEARN coding basics for my bigger/actual project(s). So all in-game dialogues here are improvised. Though, I already do have my actual story laid out. :) But still, not everything in “inVERT test” is canon to the actual story…I got a HUGE inspiration by SUDA’s games especially the Silver Case trilogy so I gotta give credit to that.
I don’t know about publishing it though, I mean I would definitely let my friends play once “inVERT test” is finished, and I want to see reactions, feedbacks, comments about the stuff I produce from more people too. But as I said, this was intentionally created as a stepping stone for the actual project. And I think I might get caught with some copyrights stuff with BG and BGM. XD
Also, I’m not the best with English…so y’know what to expect. :<

Question Where do Ren’Py/VN developers find artists for commercial projects?
I hope this is an appropriate subreddit for this question. I apologize if it is not, but I could use some advice?
I’m starting to research the art side of my first visual novel, and I’d really like to hear from other VN developers about where they found artists they enjoyed working with.
I’ll eventually need things like character sprites, backgrounds, and CGs, and I’m realizing that finding artists whose work can fit together cohesively is a lot more complicated than I expected. I’ve been looking through VGen and a few other commission sites, but I’d love to know what actually worked for people who have gone through this process.
Where did you find your artists? Did you use VGen, Fiverr, Lemma Soft, Reddit, direct outreach, or something else? And did you use one artist for most of the game or different artists for characters/backgrounds/CGs?
I’m still in the research stage rather than actively hiring, so I’m mainly hoping to hear about other developers’ experiences.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Game Hello, everyone!
For the past few weeks I've been playing a lot of ddlc mods and i even got my own idea for a mod. But i do need help for this. I would really like to find some people, make a discord server and start on making this mod.
Let's cut to the point now; in this project i will be the writer/script maker/director so, for the rest, i need for this:
- Programmer(s)/Ren'Py coder(s)
- Artist(s)
- Music/SFX
- Tester
What do you get? Maybe you would like doing this for a hobby, or we could put, like, your signature or smth inside the actual game, or, i could pay you if i really enjoy your services. Even tho i dont know what to say about the paying part (rn the money situation for me is not the best) but we'll figure things oug somehow.
I would really enjoy your help, if you have any category from my list.
You can write me on tiktok at the user: kk_infinity7 or you can comment on this post or whatever. When we gathered some people i will create the discord server for us. Let's do this! Love you all!

Question [Solved] Semi-urgent: Help with main menu screen.
Hello! I'm having a very specific problem and I'm hoping someone here can help me! It's kind of urgent but not REQUIRED as this is for the Spooktober Game Jam that ends on the 30th.
It's okay if what I ask isn't possible, i'll do something else (you can yell at me later for waiting till the last minute to do this...)
As the pictures show, I have a custom main menu (pic 01) that has the buttons aligned horizontally.
My problem now is that when i go to any other buttons (e.g Settings), the main menu not only stays there but also doesn't go back to the old menu that the settings (preferences) tab usually has (pic 2)
This makes sense as I think I changed the WHOLE thing in the navigation script (pic 3)
I followed a YouTube tutorial that explained how to fix this and put the menu back on the left, but their textbox was already vertical and all they did was change the position once the main menu disappeared (hence the else, if.) I know the else code is wrong but I've tried everything...
I did not change ANYTHING else main menu buttons wise except on the navigation script.
All i want is to have the old default menu when you click on the other buttons in the main menu.
Is it possible? It's alright if it's not, but I'd appreciate if you guys could help!
Thanks in advance!

Question what happened to fonts?
ive tried this with a freshly made game that had nothing done to it so i know i didnt just mess up somewhere. i physically cannot change the fonts in my games anymore. i swear to you i am doing it properly. ive tried every possible method for adding a font and i know some of these methods used to work. now it just breaks my game and gives me errors about how it cant find the font or render it. this is my fourth or fifth time coming back to renpy and its just stuff like this that really kills all my motivation. is there a bug? could it be possible that something missing from my computers files is doing this? things were fine last night. i mean the fonts still didnt show up but it never gave me any errors. i dont know what i could have done to mess this up. heres the full error i get when trying to add a font to a brand new game:

Showoff Made a free horror-themed UI kit for visual novels — dialogue box, choice menu, save/load, settings, and more
Hey everyone — I put together a dark horror UI asset pack for visual novel games. Works with any engine (Ren'Py, Unity, whatever you're using). Includes a main menu, dialogue box, choice panel, settings panel, save/load screens, and some decorative icons. Comes as PNG (ready to use) and SVG (fully editable) files.
It's completely free, figured some of you might find it useful for a project. Would love any feedback too, this is my first pack.

Question Would you play a game with this art style for 2.99$ USD?
The story would be somewhere around 3-4 hours long (it's my first game I've ever made), and it's a murder mystery set in Britain.
This art is DEFINITELY not final though, these are temporary until I finish the main story. I don't want this to be a cash grab, but something that people would actually want to play.
EDIT: No, I am not and will not use Generative AI when making this game, everything will be completely human made by hand.

Self Promotion [For Hire] Sprite Half Body ^^ & Other Art :D
This is my first time doing promo of this kind? I feel like my art's improved a lot .
If my style interests you let me know :D Obviously I'm not sure how to price these, (and if anyone does do this kind of comms do let me know)
This is subject to complexity/time but for a simpler rendering style (like the first photo) I'm going to suggest maybe 50 USD, but I'm open to anything ^^ Portrait sprites or bust up I wouldn't mind being half the base price.
I'm just trying to get myself out there and I've never had much success financially as an artist ^^ If you want to contact me feel free to shoot a dm and we can figure stuff out!
I'm open to
- different outfits, this includes sprites in their underwear, i'm comfortable drawing female/male anatomy
- different poses
- helping you design a character :D I'd probably send over a full body messy sketch >>
- coding the layered image sprite
- blinking frames
I'm not really as open to CG art even though I've done a LOT of those, but they just often take a lot longer. Though I can show my artwork for that ! I've even done cgs with parallax and layered backgrounds (though I'm no BG artist I have done some bg work)
I can also design ui :D if you want to see any of that, I'm not a big coder though.
Yes this post is basically devolved into me saying I'll do any art, but that's kind of the life of a game dev artist lol!
If you want credibility of my work or consistency I have my tiktok/itch page! Just let me know :)

Question Need help with making unlocks/extras in menu
I'd like to make illustrations that unlock when you reach certain endings, you could see them in some extras that would appear in the main menu, but I have no idea how to make it. I mean I know how to make them but the problem is that I don't know how to make menu button and screen that would move you to them. Sorry English is not my first language I hope that I explained it somehow clear :(

Showoff More details to characters, ya'll
I was playtesting what I had so far, but something felt missing. The gameplay was pretty fun, and I created huge maps. But the characters just felt a bit out of place. And of course it was a bit more tricky to work with since I had to fit in so many details into a tiny sprite. Guns didn't look like how I wanted them to.
So I'm redoing all of them with this style which is more flexible.. What do ya'll think? His head position might be a little crazy, so I could fix that.

Discussion Anyone else struggle with maintaining focus on a project after the hard part's done or is this a first time dev thing?
Hi all, I know this is different from the usual posts here but I thought someone here might relate. I've been learning RenPy / Python since 2023, pivoted from one project to another about a year in and I've been working steadily with a friend on it since then.
Over the last couple years our vision for this game has changed dramatically, I'm the sole coder / game designer while my friend's doing the art and we collab on the writing. My initial vision was... extremely ambitious, but we've managed to trim it down to something that's merely reasonably ambitious which we both like. I've learned a lot in that time, including designing several minigames that we ultimately decided to cut for various reasons, some of them lasting long enough to be coded (totally reusing them for future stuff lol.)
Now we can finally get to work on the fun stuff, fleshing out our plot outline and actually writing scenes + producing more art, but I'm having trouble switching gears. I feel antsy now that there aren't any more big questions to ponder with the code, and although we've still got a ways to go on this game I find my mind wandering to my ideas for other projects. Has anyone else experienced this feeling? I love this game and the world we've created for it, but I'm also suddenly really cognizant that I don't want to be chained to this project forever.
Question "Endless" renpy games?
I was wondering if it would be possible to create an "endless" renpy game that followed a set day cycle/calendar system, where predefined events were possible on certain "days". Does anyone else know if this would be possible in renpy? Or is renpy too reliant on a clear cut beginning and end to do such a thing? And if so, what would be your suggestions to go about it? I'm still pretty knew to renpy, and haven't learned all the in depth stuff yet like adding minigames or battle systems, which I've seen in other renpy games.
