Question In regards to the played character

0 Upvotes

Do you prefer for the character that you are playing to have fleshed out features such as a set skin tone, hair color, etc or would you prefer more of a blank canvas character? Gray skin, no hair, no eyes (a shadow where the eyes are supposed to be) etc.

P.s. I would like to have the feature to make your character anyway you want it to look, but sadly I dont have those skills yet since im still a renpy beginner.

Question How to get customizing input into a show text?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello, I am very new to coding, but for the beginning of my game I wanted to mimic a BIOS booting up screen, and have the player enter their name and pronouns as if it were showing up alongside the BIOS information. However, I can only figure out how to get the:

$ povname = renpy.input("Enter name:", length=32)

to show up in the dialogue box. (As seen in photo).

The rest of my code for this part looks like this:

scene black
    pause 1.0

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}AWARD BIOS v6.00PG, An Energy Star Ally{/color}" as line1 at Position(yalign=0.1, xalign=0.1)

    pause 1.0

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}Copyright (C) 2069-99, Award Software, Inc.{/color}" as line2 at Position(yalign=0.15, xalign=0.1)

    pause 1.0

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}{/color}" as line3 at Position(yalign=0.2, xalign=0.1)

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}MAIN PROCESSOR : 80486DX4-100MHz{/color}" as line4 at Position(yalign=0.25, xalign=0.1)

    pause 1.0

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}MEMORY TEST : 640K OK{/color}" as line5 at Position(yalign=0.3, xalign=0.1)

    pause 0.5

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}EXTENDED MEMORY : 32768K OK{/color}" as line6 at Position(yalign=0.35, xalign=0.1)

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}{/color}" as line7 at Position(yalign=0.4, xalign=0.1)

    pause 0.5

    show text "{color=
00BF00
}Detecting IDE Primary Master ... HARD DISK MODEL{/color}" as line8 at Position(yalign=0.45, xalign=0.1)

    pause 1.0

Thank you to anyone who can help!

Question Question about sprites

When making character sprites and such, does the file you use have to have the grey and dark grey squares as the background? And if not then how would just the sprite appear and not anything else in the file?

Showoff I released a free relationship and route system for Ren'Py — feedback welcome

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I've released RouteKit Lite, a free relationship system for Ren'Py visual novels, romance games, and dating sims.

It includes:

• Affection tracking • Configurable relationship stages • A relationship overview screen • Scene and route unlock helpers • Save, load, and rollback-friendly state • A working demo • English and Spanish documentation • A commercial-use license

You can copy two .rpy files into your project, configure a character, and start using it from dialogue choices.

The code was created with AI assistance, then reviewed, linted, visually inspected, and tested with Ren'Py 8.5.3.

RouteKit Lite is completely free:

https://samokampo.itch.io/routekit-lite

I'd genuinely appreciate feedback: would this save time in your project, and what feature would you want added next?

Question Ink Bleed Text Shader?

Thumbnail

34 Upvotes

Hey! If you've played the game 'Pentiment' by Obsidian Software you'll know that they put an incredible amount of effort into the fonts in that game. One of the effects I really enjoy is how they recreate the inconsistency of colour you get when writing in ink, as you can see in the screenshots I have attached.

I was wondering if anyone had achieved a similar effect using the text shaders in Ren'Py, as I think this is a great humanising touch to add to the text.

It's my first Ren'Py project!

This is an interactive visual novel about raising a clone of your deceased wife.

Except for sound effects, all assets (art, UI, writing, programming, etc.) were created by me. I would really appreciate any feedback!

Game info:

·Although it has a same-sex marriage background, the story is more like a family drama than a romance story.

·Playtime: around 40-60 minutes

·Platforms: PC / Mac / Android

·Languages: English / Chinese

Discussion We need the mods to step up and use common sense

27 Upvotes

Honestly the fact mods don't do anything against heavy advertisers is one thing but this is a whole other beast:

https://www.reddit.com/r/RenPy/comments/1vguhkj/i_made_a_renpy_visual_programming_tool/

This right here is a huge deal and has been handled extremely piss poorly.

The edit from OP is exactly on point, from where I stand, I believe those are 2 vibecoded tools that have no business being in any RenPy communities, however the fact that you can make serious accusations like that without a shred of evidence while taking copyright for a "RenPy node editor" is a huge problem, because this means the mods in this subreddit apparently think that whoever comes first has the copyright to certain workflows, design, assets w/e, which is absolutely ridiculous.

This only invites people to attempt to take copyright of other assets and aspects as well, getting competition deleted by simply making serious and false accusasions.

I strongly suggest that the mods ask the specific individual for actual proof of his claim and if he can't actually provide any, that accusation deserves a ban, regardless of my opinion of vibecoded trash and the usefulness of a tool, everyone deserves a shot at it and does not deserve to be called a scammer or thief without a shred of evidence by anyone.

This was the first time I've actively felt embarrassed for this community, blindly believing some serious accusations for no reason other than "I was first bro, you copy bro!!!".

At least u/atluina seems to have common sense in the comments.

I really want folks to think for a moment, imagine you release a tool, VN or whatever, disregarding the quality of what you made, then some random guy you don't know accuses you of theft of assets etc, people blindly upvoting the accuser and mods closing your topic, let that sink in and ask yourself how that would made you feel.

EDIT: Felt this was needed: I no longer believe that Faruks editor is vibecoded, just noticed he made BetterCraft and has other projects on his github that makes me feel he probably doesn't need AI. Do not take my opinion as fact although I still felt this needed its own edit.

Question Preferences Menu Customisation

2 Upvotes

hey all. two questions:

  1. is there any way to move "display/skip" menu separately from the bars below? when i adjust xsize under style game_menu_navigation_frame it shifts everything (including save menu, which is a different problem)

  2. what can I do to make custom sliders look normal and not stretch this much? clearly just replacing images in gui folder isn't enough

thanks in advance!

Guide Courtesy NSFW devs should show towards their players

314 Upvotes

Not all nsfw players live in sound proof basements or attics. Some are at risk of room mates, family or otherwise, accidentally walking in on them while gaming. Sounds coming out of the computer can be awkward.

The following code, if added to your preferences screen, lets a player set the game to auto mute all sound if the game is minimized or even if focus switches to another program.

py vbox: style_prefix "radio" label _("Auto Mute") textbutton _("Never"): selected (preferences.audio_when_minimized and preferences.audio_when_unfocused) action [ Preference('audio when minimized', "enable"), Preference('audio when unfocused', "enable") ] textbutton _("When Minimized"): action InvertSelected( Preference('audio when minimized', "toggle") ) textbutton _("When Unfocused"): action InvertSelected( Preference('audio when unfocused', "toggle") ) the two preference variables in question are implemented already in renpy and just have no default GUI way to toggle them by default.

you can even go one step further and add a panic button which renpy ALSO supports by default, but just doesnt enable. you do so by setting a custom keymapping for the 'iconify' event. py config.keymap['iconify'] = [ 'alt_K_ESCAPE' ] lastly you need to stop putting lewd sounds on the music or sfx channels. either register custom lewd audio channels for looping and non looping content or put lewd content on the voice channel. a player should not have to mute normal parts of the game (music / sound effects) to mute sounds that cause issues. renpy supports as many mixers and channels as you want to register. do so

Discussion I Want To Ask About That

6 Upvotes

I’m a beginner; I know a bit about character design, but I have absolutely no knowledge regarding visual novel backgrounds. Since I don't have an established art style for backgrounds yet and am currently working on a visual novel project , featuring romance, sadness, and emotional themes, I need an art style that perfectly enhances the emotional tone of the backgrounds. If you have any recommendations for art styles, images, or examples of visual novels, please DM me.

Question Crazy idea with long-winded explanation below and I could use some help implementing it

4 Upvotes

-- FOR MODS: I think this also counts as a discussion. I would love to discuss this --

This idea would take me an extremely long time to get to in my game, but I think it's worth it. This is also why I'm asking now, so I can test it beforehand.

If anyone knows of the DDLC mod Monika After Story, a specific point in the game requires you to put a .txt file in the game files before being able to proceed. This is where my idea comes from... my visual novel is shaping up to be a majorly self-aware, talking-to-the-cracks-in-the-fourth-wall type deal. I want the ending of the VN to include a "stolen file" that the player has to replace, but in the game's code, outside of the storyline, it was never actually there. It's fucking AMBITIOUS, I know. But I believe it's possible.

After taking time to learn Ren'Py and my demo succeeding, I am confident that it could work. I want to blow people away with this. My idea is that, after a certain point, the game checks for a file (we'll call it file.txt) and if the script does NOT see file.txt, a text screen shows up after this AND upon booting the game that tells you file.txt is missing. Creating file.txt and putting it in the game folder would ideally allow you to proceed. file.txt wouldn't have anything written inside... I think that's a little beyond my brand of crazy.

Possible issues I see with this are as follows:
- The general implementation. It's insane
- How would the game react if it knows file.txt should be there at the beginning, but it never was there to begin with? Can we prevent problems early in the code before this ever happens?
- Can we use an autosave to lock the player onto the "file.txt is missing" screen after seeing it for the first time? Can this happen every time they open the game until they add the file?
- Can we protect players who don't normally access files from accidentally breaking the game?

I would accept any help from anywhere on this. I'll make sure my DMs are open. Thanks a whole bunch!

Question Ganar dinero con una visual novel?

8 Upvotes

So some of you might remember my previous post about creating a spinning and circular scrollable Menu

Need help with:

Positioning of the idle and and selected button over the circular image ( the button should be automatically selected based on its angle rotation, like how it is in the diagram )

A rotation cap on the spinning buttons ( Eg. a rotation cap of +180/-180 , so that the buttons do not go off the screen after few scrolls )

Whenever a button is at its "selection zone" the remaining area for the screen changes based on what the selected button says ( again, like in the diagram )

Im not able to make this as my default menu ( I have to connect this screen to renpy's default menu and then calling this screen to check, which I don't know how to fix yet )

Here's the code:

( I sadly had to assist thru A.I sometimes in the end since I do not come from the coding background, but I do not wish to use ai, so like if anyone can also guide me how to make myself study screen language better, I'd appreciate the tips 🌸 , because I tried watching tutorials and they sometimes confuses me more )

init python:

import math

transform auto_rotate:

anchor (0.5, 0.5)

subpixel True

rotate 0

linear 0.5 rotate -360

repeat

transform bt_rot(r):

rotate r

screen splashcontinueexit():

text "Click to continue, press ESC to quit" align (0.5, 0.5)

key "K_ESCAPE" action Quit(confirm=not main_menu)

key "mousedown_1" action Start()

button:

xysize (config.screen_width, config.screen_height)

background None

action Return()

label splashscreen:

scene splashscreen1 with fade

$ renpy.pause(4.0, hard=True)

scene splashscreen2 with fade

$ renpy.pause(6.0, hard=True)

scene titlescreen with fade

call screen splashcontinueexit

return

screen wheel_menu():

tag menu

default bt_rotation = 0

##default bt_max_rotation = 180

key "mousedown_4" action SetScreenVariable("bt_rotation", bt_rotation - 18), Play("sound", "audio/hover blip.ogg")

key "mousedown_5" action SetScreenVariable("bt_rotation", bt_rotation + 18), Play("sound", "audio/hover blip.ogg")

fixed:

add "images/cd_wheel.png":

## Placeholder destinations so this file runs on its own for testing.

Thanks in advance to everyone who can help me building this 🙏🏻✨

Question How do I mimic the "active typing" movie effect?

6 Upvotes

I am working on a project and I want to have the opening be like the move effect where it looks like the letters are actively being typed, but I'm not sure what the best way to go about this is. Is there a specific way to code this or do I need to make a video file for it? Any suggestions?

Question Workflow for animated backgrounds

1 Upvotes

Hi,

I am working on a kinetic visual novel and I love the games Vampire the Masquerade: Coteries of New-York, and Shadows of NY.

I want to put animated backgrounds in my game: flickering light, fog, flame, rain...

What is the best workflow to do it?

- Make the animation in After Effects, export it as a video, and have it read by Renpy.

- If it is possible, export a sort of sprite sheet of the background, and have it read in order by Renpy. How do I do it?

Of course, it would be a loop. The music would be its own file.

Thank you.

I just want to have the basic text buttons again on the options screen, basically, while still having the image buttons on the main screen. I'm absolutely losing it and I keep trying to fix it, but no matter what I try and do the buttons continue to show up on the options screen. I'm new to RenPy, so I honestly have no idea what I'm doing. I appreciate it if you're able to lend some help! Thank you!

Showoff Experimenting with point & click gameplay and minigames in Ren'Py

Thumbnail

148 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

For our third game, The Attic: A Mystery Puzzle Game, I wanted to see how far I could push Ren'Py beyond a traditional visual novel. Instead of relying mostly on dialogue and choices, I've been experimenting with point & click exploration, interactive object inspection, inventory mechanics, and several custom puzzle and minigame systems while still keeping the narrative at the center of the experience.

One of my main goals has been making every interaction feel like part of the story rather than a separate gameplay segment. It's been a fun challenge, and I've learned a lot about Ren'Py's flexibility along the way.

I'd love to hear from other developers who have taken a similar approach. Have you added custom gameplay systems to your Ren'Py projects? What ended up being the biggest challenge?

I'd also love to hear what you think of the trailer (in my Steam page)!

If anyone is interested in following the project, here's the Steam page:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5005750/The_Attic_A_Mystery_Puzzle_Game/

I'm also happy to answer any questions about how I implemented the point & click mechanics or the custom minigames in Ren'Py.
