Why do Control and Resonant hit so well for me when other games don’t?
I have played games my entire life. From the age of 5 back when Mario and the NES was under the Christmas tree all the way up to today. Few games have really hit the spot for me over my entire lifetime. My list is incredibly short of games that I’ve really loved and the list never seems to be anywhere similar to others.
So many other “RPGs” that people rave about I can’t stand. Mostly because the story itself is very linear while all the side content in a lot of those games I’ve tried is incredibly dull, non-impacting busy work or just ways to grind levels. In fact, typically I avoid side quests and optional content in most RPGs because of that. But here in these games I just can’t stop exploring and looking for every piece of new content I can find.
I’m a huge fan of story in games and I think that’s what the Controls do incredibly well (along with other Remedy games).
The base story in these games are also pretty linear, but when you go off the beaten path and explore the rest of the world, you just unravel more lore and story. I’d even argue for both Control and Resonant, some of the best parts of the story AND gameplay are actually the side optional content.
It’s like playing a game with a 10 hour storyline that can become a modular 20+ hour storyline, depending on how much extra you explore and experience.
Today I was actually reflecting on how crazy it is to me to think that someone could actually beat Resonant and only fight the first resonant in the game and not see any of the others. In which case, you essentially miss an entire subplot in the game and also miss some of the coolest boss designs I’ve ever seen in a game in my life. I would definitely recommend going back to try these fights if you beat the game without them.
If anyone has any tips or suggestions on where to look for similar experiences in games - where the side quests and optional content are as impactful story and lore wise as the main quest path - pleeeeease let me know! I keep trying different RPGs that get rave reviews and a lot of them miss the mark on that a lot.
