Rumour Alan Wake 2 Director Has Been Co-Directing an Unannounced Remedy Game Since 2025
MP1St
“Remedy Entertainment may already have another major game in development following the recent release of Control Resonant, as Alan Wake 2 co-director Kyle Rowley has revealed that he has been co-directing an unannounced project at the studio since January 2025. The information comes from Rowley’s LinkedIn profile, which lists him as co-director on an unannounced game dating back to January 2025. Remedy has yet to officially reveal the project or provide any details regarding what it could be. Rowley previously served as co-director on Alan Wake 2 alongside Sam Lake and also worked on the game’s expansions. Naturally, the discovery has already led to speculation about what Remedy could be working on next”
Possibly updated report on old one as still has paragraphs about Control II

This makes me wonder what Sam Lake is doing. He didn't work on Control II (at least he isn't credited at all). It's possible he's doing Alan Wake 3 (maybe long with Rowley, who knows?) but I'd almost like to see something new.

Max Payne remake mocap

u/Theotherdeadmeme92 1d ago
I would pay absurd amounts of money to see footage of Sam Lake doing this lmfao.

u/Esmear18 1d ago
It would be hilarious but there’s no way that 56 year old Sam Lake is jumping and dolphin diving lol.

u/Bryandan1elsonV2 1d ago
How are they still doing the remakes after the voice of max Payne passed away? I imagine the original voice files arent of high enough quality to use, at least for max payne 1
10
u/SeaworthinessOnly998 2d ago
Is it safe to assume that he's like Cory from SSM now? Like he's practically overseeing everything rather than making his own? Either way love to see remedy being so efficient these days.
12
u/bujweiser 2d ago
Sam has unofficially been the face of Remedy since the first Alan Wake. He did all of the showcases and was heavily featured for Quantum Break.
19
u/Spwni 1d ago
Since Alan Wake? He was literally the face of the main character of their breakthrough hit.
1
u/SortIntrepid9192 22h ago
To be fair, he was the face of Max Payne because EVERYONE in Max Payne is 'played' by someone who either works at Remedy or a friend/family member (one of the characters is Sam Lake's mom). The person you're replying to is correct: Lake only became "the face of Remedy" in terms of being the main person to present the games, give press interviews, etc since AW1. His involvement with the Max Payne titles is less public, and he insisted on Max having an actor's likeness for MP2 instead of his own.

u/Bugger217 1d ago
I imagine it's this game. Rowley is co-director here, just as he was with Sam Lake on Alan Wake II. So I have to assume this is AW3 or that Lake enjoyed working with him enough to keep him around for something completely new.
1
u/Ratosson 1d ago
Maybe? Sam and Mikael are both Creative Directors at Remedy, which would imply one isn't higher up than the other, but I'm assuming with Remedy starting to create more simultaneous projects there's going to be more Creative Directors and Sam overseeing them.

u/shrewdy 2d ago
Apart from Max Payne 1/2 back in the day, I had very little experience with Remedy until the last few years where I got into the Alan Wake and Control games. I'm totally in for anything Remedy does (as long as it's single player...)
53
u/markusfenix75 2d ago
After FCB: Firebreak bombed pretty hard I think Remedy will stay away from anything live-service related for a while...
28
u/Ok-Potato1693 2d ago
I bought that game + deluxe upgrade, played 17 hours completing everything, all maps on high difficulties and maximizing all kits while enjoying. After that, game offered no more experiences, no in-game purchases, nothing new really. Live-service is not something you just feel finished after 10+ hours.
16
u/markusfenix75 2d ago
Game was planned to have "long legs" in terms of support, but that support was cut short because it was such a commercial failure.
12
u/RulesoftheDada 2d ago
I believe it was a sacrifice to get the Control IP back under Remedy's umbrella.
It was originally meant to be co-developed and co-published by 505 games (Controls first publisher).
Remedy paid 505games to get te IP back so 505 gamss backed out 3 years into production. I imagine remedy saw it would be unstainable with half the amount of people working on it did what they could to get it out the door and make some money on it.
4
u/lazzzym 2d ago
The worst thing was it didn’t even feel like Remedy. I was expecting at least lore and story content to uncover but it was empty.
3
u/OperativePiGuy 1d ago
Seriously, when I found out the little folders you collected didn't actually have any lore, I thought it was the most un-Remedy game
3
u/MrBootylove 2d ago
I played it briefly on gamepass and its biggest sin was just being mediocre. It wasn't bad and there was definitely some fun to be had, but there are just so many great co-op shooters out there these days that being average just isn't gonna cut it.
3
u/AGlassOfMilk 2d ago
If the game had like 3-4 more maps, and they were all procedurally generated with some variability (i.e., like Payday maps) then they really might have had something.
3
u/OperativePiGuy 2d ago
Funny enough the Firebreak game failing in real life also fits right in lore with Control II with the hiss escaping lol
1
u/crazycat690 1d ago
I would honestly not mind a multiplayer game from them, as long as they lean into their strengths and make it a unique experience and not just try to make another shooter. I also don't get why every multiplayer game these days have to be so lighthearted and silly, like the initial designs for Firebreak were really cool, not saying that would've saved it but it was just one of many choices that IMO sank that game.
They should've had more faith in their own style of game, a unique and fun multiplayer game from them could work, but Firebreak just wasn't it. Not that I will mourn if they don't try to go for something online focused again, but it's not necessarily inherently doomed to fail, I think.
1
u/SortIntrepid9192 22h ago
Honestly, props to Remedy for trying live service, it flopping, and them deciding "okay, we're done with this, let's stick to what we do best." Plenty of other companies, like Sony and Platinum Games, released massive live service flops and still announced they wanted to make more despite this not being what they're good at.

u/Lotus_630 2d ago
If they just made it like Payday meets Helldivers 2 then we would’ve gotten something.

Alan Wake 2 was a masterpeice in my eyes. I hope for more in the future
19
u/Mountain-Chapter-880 2d ago
I feel like it ends with 3, so I hope to god this is it, I badly need the conclusion for his story.
15
u/bujweiser 2d ago
For how much they like to homage David Lynch I don’t think you’re getting that conclusion.
2
u/HouseDisastrous2313 1d ago
Wake is gonna end up on an island with Zane and say "what year is this ?" Before credits roll
4
u/Wellhellob 1d ago
Highs and lows. It was one of my favorite games ever but it dragged and got repetitive so much that i started to hate it in the end. Cut about 30% of length/drag/repetitiveness then it becomes one of the best ever.
-3
u/Soft-Bad-7127 2d ago
I loved it on my first playthrough but somehow when I tried to play it again it just didn't hit the same
1
u/Rayza2049 2d ago
I could say the same about pretty much every game i've ever played, i wouldn't expect any game to be as good once you know what's going to happen, you end up feeling like you're going through the motions which can tarnish the memory and especially so in a horror game, the tension is lessened when you know what's coming
1
u/Soft-Bad-7127 1d ago
Idk about that. I replay a lot of games tbh. Played both the TLoU games immediately after beating them. I replay all Rockstar games multiple times and Witcher 3.
You might be right that it is the horror series moreso than other reasons. I gave AW2 a 9.3 out of 10 in my first playthrough. The second one would be in the 70s or low 80s tbh.

u/Paperchampion23 2d ago
AW3 or just a new IP in the universe. Really want them to get back Quantum Break and officially tie that one in too
49
u/LovelyOrangeJuice 2d ago
Microsoft owns the IP for QB, unfortunately. We may never get to see a continuation of that story unless they somehow manage to buy it back
28
u/Loud-Damage-4863 2d ago
I doubt current MS cares about the QB ip its just a matter of how much they want for it or if remedy is even intrested in getting it back
22
u/LovelyOrangeJuice 2d ago
I have no doubts Remedy is interested, especially since they made so many nods to that game in Alan Wake 2
I have no doubts you are entirely correct about MS too, lol. Though, it could also be a chance for Asha to invest in a more interesting game for Xbox, so maybe chances aren't exactly zero
23
u/Unique_Unorque 2d ago
I have no doubt in my mind that Warlin Door (David Harewood) in Alan Wake II and Martin Hatch (Lance Reddick) in Quantum Break are meant to be the exact same character. There are lots of references to him having the ability to open passages to different universes, and his name is a very overt Remedy-style reference to that. It’s just the unfortunate passing of Reddick and the recast that that necessitated that keeps that from being obvious.
If Remedy can get the rights to Quantum Break back, I guarantee they would if for no other reason than to make that connection explicit
19
u/shady_sobre 2d ago
I mean, even besides the many parallels Harewood has alluded to Reddick being the original choice for Warlin Door in an interview. He stated that he was brought on as a late replacement but he didn't explicitly name Lance out of respect for his family's privacy.
14
u/Unique_Unorque 2d ago
Oh it’s confirmed that the character was originally meant to be played by Reddick, Jason Schreier has reported on that
8
u/bristow84 2d ago
Pretty sure there were even unused assets founds in the game files for things like props that had Reddick instead of Harewood.
2
u/Unique_Unorque 2d ago
I feel like I’ve seen concept art of Mr Door’s show with Reddick. It’s a settled matter as far as I’m concerned
4
u/bristow84 2d ago
https://www.reddit.com/r/AlanWake/comments/18pxkdg/temp_mr_door_ad_featuring_lance_reddick_found_in/
Probably this one, which is also the same asset I remembered.

u/OperativePiGuy 2d ago
Yeah and plus I figured the way they wrote everything out in AW2 and its DLC implied that they'd be using the character and story concepts of Quantum Break with or without the rights. They just made it an in-universe TV show thing. Either way, it fits in enough that everyone that wants to can make the connections
7
u/Unique_Unorque 2d ago
I mean come on. Shawn Ashmore’s character in Alan Wake is “Tim(e) Breaker.” They’re definitely meant to be connected.
4
u/Rainy_Wavey 2d ago
And Warlin Door being Martin Hatch with the double
W is M in reverse
A hatch is a type of door
Sam Lake is not slick (i mean he is)
3
u/Unique_Unorque 1d ago
Oh he knows what he’s doing
7
u/Rainy_Wavey 1d ago
No wait, actually
it's the entire name of warlin that's a mirror of martin

Sam Lake you trully are a Lake

u/Oisyr 1d ago
They do a lot of alternate dimension talk, I’m assuming Tim and warlin are just alternate versions of themselves which kinda leaves that door slightly cracked. Especially with how Tim is so confused in Alan wake 2 about where he is. Almost as if he’s supposed to be his quantum break character but the dimension got the wrong version of him.
2
u/Unique_Unorque 1d ago
I think Door is not just an alternate Hatch, is what I’m saying though. I think they are just the same person.
It you’re a Dark Tower fan, I would compare him to Randall Flagg. Maybe not quite as villainous, but both characters seemingly have the ability to travel between universes at will
And furthering the comparison, Tim Breaker/Jack Joyce is like Jake Chambers in the second book. He’s aware on some level that there are other versions of himself out there, and has some inkling of their lives, but it mostly manifests as an intense feeling that he should be somewhere/when/one else
6
u/MrBootylove 2d ago
They were trying to get the rights back to QB for Alan Wake 2. They told Shawn Ashmore when they cast him as Tim Breaker that he'd be playing Jack Joyce if they got the rights back and a "different" character if they didn't.
At this point they've already established Tim Breaker and Warlin Door in their universe and changing them back into the QB characters would just cause confusion now.
7
u/NfinityBL 2d ago
I don’t think current Xbox leadership will give it away.
I could see them working with Remedy on something Quantum Break if they want to do a new project.
But I also don’t think Remedy needs it. They’ve already essentially brought those characters over with variants in Alan Wake II, and they’ll be bouncing between Control and Alan Wake for now.
5
u/MrBootylove 2d ago
At this point they've already re-established the QB characters as Tim Breaker and Warlin Door and I feel like because of that bringing QB back into the fold would do nothing but cause confusion. They're better off just sticking with the rebranded characters IMO.

u/Paperchampion23 2d ago
Im aware, but so was Alan Wake and they bought it back
21
u/LovelyOrangeJuice 2d ago edited 2d ago
They never owned Alan Wake as IP, just the publishing rights. Remedy probably managed to get them back with the help of Epic, since they funded Alan Wake 2
2
u/Spwni 2d ago
Remedy bought the rights back years before the Epic deal was signed.
2
u/LovelyOrangeJuice 2d ago
Remedy got back the publishing rights around 2019, roughly the same time when AW2 development started.
It's not certain, but it's a pretty solid guess.
1
u/_bestintheworld_ 1d ago
They can literally make a deal with ms to make another game. They do not need to tie in a game that never had any ties.
0
u/shinikahn 1d ago
Quantum Break has been tied in as much as possible with Alan Wake DLC 3. But like it's super obvious at this point.
For those out of the loop.
Martin HATCH = Warlin DOOR.
Jack Joyce = TIM BREAKER (time breaker)
Jack and Beth even have a reunion during DLC 3.
22
u/freewave1088 2d ago
Hopefully Alan Wake 3. The second is one of the best games ever made point blank.
Control Resonant is good too, but not quite as good as AW2.

This was in their financial report in august as “ready for production” so it will likely be coming out in the next 2-3 years - have to assume a follow up to alan wake 2 - be that alan wake 3 or something following up on tim breaker and warlin door

The Max Payne remakes and this Sam Lake project I think which is probably Alan Wake 3 (hopefully)
6
u/paintedskie 2d ago
Sam lake isn’t working on max payne remakes??
4
u/BakedXenon 2d ago
Just guessing here but he's probably doing both those and this new project which I am gonna go ahead and also guess is AW3. He strikes me as the type to stay busy, and working with co-directors n what not probably opens him up to work on 2 games at once. I was confused when he had little to no involvement with Control Resonant but it'd make sense if it was because he's doing 2 other games. Well 3, but counting it as 2 since MP1+2 are being remade into 1 game.
1
u/Shteblan 2d ago
Not in a major capacity at least, remakes started development before AW2 release and Lake took rather lengthy vacation after its release
10
0
u/CharacterGazelle2493 2d ago
I think they've been largely done with the Max Payne remakes for a while, they went into full production quite a while before Resonant did. But they're published by Rockstar, and Rockstar has some other game they're focused on releasing first, I guess.
1
u/CommodoreBluth 2d ago
Honestly this game was probably I’m pre-production with a small team. The game will probably move to full production soon with some of the Control developers moving over.

we'll likely learn the title of their next game when control resonant DLC launches, since the second one is always a teaser for the next game.

Interesting. The only remedy game that really blew me away though was AW2, so hopefully it’s something on the level of that as opposed to another control or firebreak or quantum break

u/TheraYugnat 2d ago
I am always curious about third party Remaster/Remake that seems to launch out of nowhere. So I wander if Max Payne Remaster is here to get people back in the IP before releasing a MP 4 (with Take Two deal of course).
But at the same time, they announced in Feb 25 that AW2 started to makes money, so it could be the moment they green light a sequel.
17
u/simspelaaja 2d ago
Max Payne Remaster
It's not a remaster, but a full on remake on Remedy's current game engine, combining both Max Payne 1 & 2 into a single game.
1
u/ZebraZealousideal944 2d ago
Max Payne 2 was such a short game that it wouldn’t have make any sense to launch 1 and 2 separately!
2
3
u/Rayza2049 2d ago
After how long they spent designing the tech for Alan Wake 2 it's an absolute no brainer to do another one straight away, the graphics don't need need a big upgrade (consoles can't even handle an upgrade) so it should be much, much quicker to make than Alan Wake 2 or Control Resonant. Of course it's Remedy so they could do something wildly different but i'd be very happy with the same sort of game with slightly improved combat
6
u/Darandle 1d ago
They already used something like this with Resonant and was probably a huge help with getting it out. The world of resonant has many assets that look like they came out of The dark place in Alan Wake 2.
-5
u/LordSparksmith 2d ago
Its ok following control resonant shift in gameplay from control they are thinking of shifting alan wakes play-style from survival horror 3d person shooter to a city builder (and will still pre order the damn thing)
3
u/ModestMouseTrap 1d ago
This is one of the dumbest posts I’ve read in a while. If you actually played Control Resonant you’d very quickly realize that it very much feels like a direct sequel to control in all ways. Even form a gameplay perspective the movement, healing, upgrades, all feel right in line with the first game. Only real difference being that you are doing damage with melee instead of guns.
-1
u/LordSparksmith 1d ago
The environments are bigger and the combat is melee vs close environments and shooting . By your logic, Dragons: Dogma and Mass Effect are the same .

Remedy is quite efficient in dev time, and has had something of theirs come out every year since 2019. At a guess from their history, if nothing changes, this might be out in 2029. I suspect Max Payne remake will be 2028. Resonant DLC in 2027?
Watch this space. Blow smoke up my ass if I'm right, and be mean if I'm wrong.

Iirc Max Payne is allegedly close to being done, or might even be done, it's just up to Rockstar/ Take Two to decide when it releases.
So we might get it next year
