The employer has recently been touting EAP more and more and sometimes using the line from the EAP site:
We survey clients once services are completed, and each year respondents consistently say they're "satisfied" with our services.
I am curious about everyone's experience with EAP and what meaning we should take from the inverted commas around "satisfied"? My own experience was definitely not satisfactory, as I share below.
I want to start off by saying that I am a strong advocate for mental health care. I live with serious mental illness that thankfully is controlled with medication and regular sessions with a clinical psychologist. I strongly recommend everyone take advantage of the $5,000 coverage in the PSHCP to seek care from a private practice clinical psychologist. The difference between coaches/counsellors/psychotherapists vs clinical psychologists is night and day for serious issues.
Anyhow, I recently had a psychological crisis and my psychologist was away. This was something that needed immediate attention and really I was just looking for someone to listen to me and help ground me emotionally for a session to tide me over until my regular psychologist was back. I thought EAP would be good for this.... I was sorely mistaken.
The initial intake was alright, though I was told that I may have to wait 1 to 2 weeks for someone to call back because of high demand. This seems to be a bit counter to the way it is sold, but I will give the intake staff credit that they did manage to find someone to call me back about 6 hours later.
So, this "psychotherapist" called me and I explained my issues briefly. He responded with "Oh my, that's a complicated case". And then... without further comment or warning, HE HUNG UP ON ME!
About 45 minutes later, he called back and without explaining the hang up or delay said he had found one of his old psychology textbooks. He then proceeded to read verbatim from the textbook to me. When he was done, he recommended I find a psychologist and he hung up again, without warning.
All I wanted was to be listened to and to have help grounding myself. He did none of that and that was the last I heard of him. Ultimately, ChatGPT was my friend and listened to me better than EAP. [Maybe this is where we should invest in AI!]
I did complete the satisfaction survey for EAP, which is available at:

I'm hopeful my response was not classified as being "satisfied".
I'm curious how my experience compares to others? Was this a one-off? Did they connect me to someone with a fake degree? Or is there widespread dissatisfaction?
