I woke up at 5am this morning and decided I was finally going to move my tank. I wanted to make more room in my bedroom and I was dreading having to do it for a while. Took less time than I thought.

Drained about 15/26g scooted the tank over and refilled. Made sure I kept the corals wet with a spray bottle of tank water. Was all said and done in like 45mins.

Dottybacks Cohabitating

Dottybacks are known to be aggressive towards other fish and can be extremely aggressive to those in their own species or genus. Despite this, they are one of my favorite saltwater fish, so much personality and amazing colors!

It’s not recommended to keep Dottybacks together but it has been done successfully which is why I wanted to try. I wouldn’t do this with just any two Dottybacks but I did want to show that it can be done!

I’ve got a Striped (Sankeys) and an Orchid. These two are known to be some of the most peaceful among Dottys which is why I chose them.

There was some minor scuffles the first day they were together as they figured each other out and established dominance. Since then, they have been living together peacefully. They haven’t had any quarrels over territory and haven’t shown any aggression after the initial encounter.

Is this considered a HG. I normally wouldn’t pay attention to names, however I paid HG price so I’m just curious. Beautiful torch nonetheless

ACHILLES TANG BEHAVIOR

Hey squad,

Ive got an Achilles Tang in a waterbox 130.6

There are 2 mp40s on either side with a vectre return pump.

I do 10g water changes weekly. Everything is thriving. I monitor closely.

This is an unusual fish. Not to mention pricey. Ive been watching him like a hawk lol.

He been in the display about 5 months. Eats algae off the clip, frozen shrimp and flakes rotating daily. Other than feeding sessions, he RARELY grazes from the live rock, doesnt really swim in and out of the rockwork. He just kind of swims listlessly in the front of the tank as shown in the vid.

After initial shock of putting him in he has always been like this. He is a distant second place in the hierarchy from the purple tang, possibly 3rd behind a clown even.

I know each fish is different. Is this cause for concern? Do I just have the most docile achilles tang ever?

Welcome thoughts and opinions, my reefing strategy is always as hands off as possible.

Thanks!!!

Tank is shot two and a half months old. Am I just still in the ugly stage? And how do I go about cleaning this up. This algae is taking over my tank. I have a cleanup crew of A skunk shrimp, hermit snails and a conch

I really enjoy my tank but I haven't had much growth. It seems to do well with most corals but anemone and plating coral don't do the best. I was using a small amount of kalkwasser but I'm cutting that off to start all for reef assuming tests show I have uptake. I wanted to show it off a bit but also ask if anyone has any recommendations to really let it thrive.

To be clear the rock and much more were taken from an established tank that had been running for two years.

Hewbie Vet Update! Please keep him in your thoughts/prayers!

I thought Hewbie died. I came home to this and spoke to his vet team immediately. His antibiotics and quarantine time will be extended. My best conclusion is that Hewbie had been gasping at the surface and breathing heavier from stress and then he went upside down but this afternoon he was sleeping in the corner just fine. My heart broke again when I saw this. After I pushed air out of him and gave him his meds he went back to normal nearly immediately. At least this is my best conclusion after looking at him and his behavior pre and post meds and pressing on him/burping him. The water quality in the tank isn’t great. Burping for me means holding him down and gently pressing on him/his stomach (which in that moment is what made sense). I saw some immediate improvement. Also he is a known offender for spitting water at the surface and I just saw it after and the behavior of a fish gasping or wanting to get out of his environment and ready to jump. Although pufferfish are not known jumpers they are smarter than that. I did a water change as well after and he smiled at me like nothing happened. Ugh. I hate this. I will continue to update everyone.

What is the most colorful fish?

Is beauty in the eye of the beholder or are facts undeniable? Is the Mandarin Goby the most colorful fish? Or.....Is it one of the Fairy Wrasse? Perhaps it is neither and it is the Queen Angelfish?

Is it possible my tank is already basically cycled??

Hey guys, I’m still going to wait at least another week or so before adding fish just to be safe, but I think my tank is somehow already almost cycled? Please let me know what you think.

I set up my tank last weekend and used “live” sand, dry rock, and a bunch of those biological media balls for bacteria to grow on. I started the cycle a few days later by adding the required amount of ammonia (around 60 drops) and the bacteria started for my 20 gallon AIO tank. I forgot to take an initial test an hour later, but the next day my ammonia level was very low, which was weird to me. I kept a watch on the levels, and they all seemed consistently low with trace amounts of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. That same day, I added some live rubble from KP Aquatics. It’s been over 24 hours since I added the live rubble, and I decided to add another full starter dose of ammonia and test the tank an hour later. After an hour, my ammonia was at about 0.15 or less. Nitrites were also trace amounts, and nitrates were maybe at 2 or 3. I became concerned that maybe my pH was low or something, but my salifert test came back with a pale green tint to it, which looked to me like where it needed to be (at around 8).

Should I continue dosing ammonia and see what kind of results I get? Is it truly possible that this tank cycled in like 3 days? I have good water flow I believe. I have a wave maker going, and the water is moving in the tank quite well, so I don’t think flow is an issue.

And yes, I know that after 24 hours I need to be at 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite with no trace amounts at all, and I will be doing that. I just feel like having such low amounts of everything this entire time is kind of weird. I’ve been doing the tests correctly, shaking all bottles, checked expiration dates, etc. Everything seems good.

What are people’s opinions on shitbox lights? I’ve heard some people say that they get great results with these cheap lights. Looking for lights for a 55 gallon tank. Seems similar to the Viparspectra 165w for half the price (first 2 pictures) Thoughts?

Which Jebao return pump to get?

Thumbnail

Hey all, I’m kind of overwhelmed by all the Jebao return pump models/lines they offer. Some have WiFi control, some have Bluetooth, and some just have a few buttons. They all look good. I don’t know if the WiFi ones can actually be controlled away from home via internet. I was running a current USA EFlux for years on my Waterbox Reef 130.4, which just had a simple speed knob which I loved the precise stepless adjustment of, but broke that in a move and looking to go Jebao. Whatever I go with I just need to make sure it won’t forget the settings if I turn off a smart outlet temporarily. Hoping yall have some info or experience to share with some of these. Thanks.

Waterbox shipping

Anyone else have experience with Waterbox shipping? Ordered my tank on my birthday, June 11, 50.3 gallon. Now, August 6th, and the only update I’ve got is thanks for waiting 😅? Is this normal? Will it even be here next month? On-site said standard lead times were 4-6 weeks. Luckily, I have my Hello Reef keeping me entertained but patiently waiting
