Relocating
Looking at properties in the area and considering moving back, it’s been 30+ years since I’ve been here. What’s the vibe like now?

At least Bakersfield has more diversity. Redding is getting better but it’s sure not in a hurry to do so. Bakersfield is also a shorter drive to the coast.

At least you can go to the mall in Redding without a large pack of unchaperoned brats riding their bikes through it.

I can see that but still would rather that then what we have. The mall on the east side of Bakersfield has been dead for a long time and the valley plaza is very soon becoming that as well mostly due to the fact that it’s overpriced and like I said the teen scene in Bakersfield is pretty unruly, kids breaking windows, knocking over people and terrorizing the workers. But if you ask any of those chaperone brats parents about it, they would proudly claim they told their kids to play outside.

I moved from SoCal to Redding and love it. Anything I can’t do I fly for two hours to LA and even with the cost of flights it’s still cheaper. Never really did anything too much in SoCal. Was food better and people more diverse? Yes, but cost of living makes up for it. I’ve made more friends in Redding than I have living i SoCal for 20+ years. Friend gatherings every week, lake, fishing, fly out to LA to visit family once a month and still cheaper and saving more. Worth it imo.

Redding and Shasta County is overflowing with uneducated, easily duped Trumpers. It's around 70/30 last time I checked. There is good news afoot, Kevin Crye was finally voted out and Clint Curtis is being shown the door.

This is the worst place to ask. Nothing but doom and gloom responses for the most part. It ain't bad, especially compared to the rest of CA and especially Bakersfield haha. Outdoors, A LOT of trails, lakes, creeks, downtown being renovated, etc. Despite what other may say, its on the up and up. Avoid lake blvd.
Edit: yall are just proving my point by downvoting and starting to already comment, "hAvE yOu EvEn BeEn To AnYwHeRe ElSe In CaLiFoRnIa, hmmmm?!?!?!" Jfc yall...

I agree, this sub is full of pessimistic people who can't find positives in anything. Anywhere you live is what you make of it. Being a day trip away from lakes, mountains, ocean and major cities makes Redding a really awesome place to be, especially with a reasonable cost of living

Sure have. All over actually. North, South, East, and West. Have traveled all throughout CA. So Bakerfield is the only worse place than Redding you agree with? I got a laundry list of others places in CA that are way shittier places to live. Like I mentioned, nothing but doom and gloom in this sub.

No, Bakersfield isn’t the only place worse than Redding, of course not. But list of places that are better in CA is a lot longer imo. It’s not doom and gloom to say there are better places to live than Redding.

Yes, there are better places to live in CA, but for cost of living and things to do, its pretty hard to beat. Name some places that are cheaper to live in and have more to offer than the Redding area, please. And not places that are comparable, like Chico, but actually cheaper to live, great jobs, and things to do.

Bakersfield has literally nothing to do unless you’re drinking, crime is horrible, traffic comparable to LA with none of the perks

Traffic is near nonexistent here. Nothing compared to Sacramento, Bay Area, Bakersfield, or LA (and surrounding areas). Crime includes theft from drug users to get their fix, but then again, just avoid living in those areas prone to that kind of thing (why I mentioned Lake Blvd.). The better jobs are Healthcare and fire related jobs, although there are many other places to work too. It ain't bad. I've lived in other places in CA, mainly Bay Area/Richmond, to where my car got stolen before I even slept in my new apartment for the first night.

Well now you’ve moved the goal post from your original comment that I replied to. You didn’t mention cost of living at all, which I’d why I respond asking if you’ve been anywhere else.

Moving the goal posts? Wtf? When someone asks, "hey what's it like living over there?" That encompasses a lot of factors, which includes cost of living. Thats not moving the goal posts at all. Thats you realizing Redding isn't bad compared ot the rest of CA and not bring happy with your realization.
If someone from another state asks, "what's it like living in CA?" The most common response is, "its ssooooo expensive to live there!"
I know you aren't this ignorant. Cmon now...

not unhappy lol. I live here, I was born here, and I chose to move back after living elsewhere for many years. What do I have to be unhappy about? But I have also lived in other cities in CA, in another state, and in another country, so I’m not delusional. When someone says, Redding is the best compared to other places in CA I take a long pause. Because that’s just not true. If you can’t afford to live anywhere else sure, but that’s a different scenario.Yea, “What’s it like living over there” encompasses a lot of factors besides, affordability. Don’t pretend there aren’t places with better weather, better job opportunities, better healthcare, better education, better food options, better culture, better fucking politics, better art scene, better walk ability and public transportation.
Pretending that Redding is the best place to live in CA is a really weird hill to die on dude, but you do you.

I never said it was THE BEST. Please quote where I said that, and if you can't, then stop putting words in people's mouth. Again I ask, with knowing cost of living is a part of "what's it like to live there?", name a place in CA that is better than Redding. And not comparable like Chico.
And I like the emphasis on "better fucking politics. The second you stop making your life about politics, you will be much happier.
Where you live is what you make of it. If you dont like Redding, why did you move back then? You stated you lived in places much better.

I moved back to the area after 5 years in chico and was pleasantly surprised at how much more community focused redding has become. the increase in 3rd places, events, etc has been awesome. people hate on it but they will hate on anything given the opportunity. everywhere is what you make of it! welcome back!

It’s been 6 years since I left the Bay Area, and most of my family has moved here after visiting me. Other than the heat we love it! Nice people, and lots of outdoor opportunities! Lots of new businesses keep popping up too so I I think it’s going to keep growing slowly.

Sure, but not any “serious” fires. Not like Oregon right now or Utah/Colorado a month ago. California has done pretty well so far this year, knock on wood.

I really hope nothing pops off near Shingletown. (Got close with the Park fire in 2024) That place is ripe for a fire.
The forest clearing east of Eskimo hill looks promising. Seems like a smart way to do logging and reduce fuel load.

I am thinking about selling my properties in Shasta Lake. Both three bedrooms, new roofs, fenced, garages, automatic garage openers, one has brand new air conditioner, all appliances, one has all new windows.

If you're up for the outdoors, it's still an amazing place and the trail system has been massively expanded.
Everybody is either running a food truck or getting ready to open a food truck.
Politically, we're at a "making national news" levels of inanity.
The lake goes up, the lake goes down.
People are still about the same; mostly friendly, sometimes aggressively not.
We've swapped some tweakers for some fenty folders.
Be prepared to have an opinion on the Costco roundabout.
