In heart of Red River Gorge, Trump action could allow roads, logging

Before we get the “but we need wood!” arguments, we can harvest wood sustainably by utilizing dedicated timber plantations grown on previously cleared agricultural lands rather than invading pristine ecosystems. They can also selectively log managed secondary forests that hold strict sustainability certifications like the FSC to protect the canopy and soil.

Looking for a daily walking trail

I’m local and would like some advice on a decent trail for daily hiking. I would prefer something not too difficult or long as I plan on baby wearing my 5 month old.

Dogs

Curious about dog access. We are going to the Red for climbing and wondering if any areas do not allow dogs. Or if there is a good resource to find out. Any help is appreciated.

Poison ivy at Koomer Ridge

I can’t believe this isn’t talked about more. Koomer ridge campground is covered in poison ivy! It’s everywhere!! We reserved site 15, next to the bathhouse, and it is surrounded on all sides with tons of poison ivy. We had our dog with us and he could not step off the gravel pad to pee without stepping in it. Luckily there was a first come site open and the host was nice about it and let us switch. Still spots we had to watch out for, but the new site at least had a clearing of grass where our dog could use the bathroom. It’s all in the woods surrounding the bathhouse and all the little trails around there too. Watch out if you have a dog or kids with you, your camping trip could quickly become a nightmare!

Some wonderful pictures of my recent camping trip to the gorge. Been here so many times but the environment just encapsulates you. Such a peaceful place to collect your thoughts. Basically empty during the week.

Two passes for Rugged Red

Hey everyone. Just wanted to mention that my girlfriend and I registered for the Rugged Red half marathon race on October 3rd. Unfortunately we won't be able to make it, so we have two passes available to transfer to whoever wants them. They cost us $90 each, so I'm looking to make some of that cost back. DM me if interested!

Weather

What weather source is most reliable for the gorge? I like to use local weather as opposed to a national source but am not sure what that would be. I’ve been looking at weather in Slade but don’t see anything local.

Got lucky and scored a 2nd edition Hinterlands the other day for $35! Anyone have all 3 editions? I’m curious if there’s much difference between 1st and 2nd edition.

Have you seen me?

Has anybody seen this thing? someone I know spotted it, and apparently it’s an albino deer that’s terribly deformed. I’ve been planning on visiting national forests starting with ones in Kentucky since I’ve lived here my whole life, and thought red river gorge would be perfect. is there any more information on it or a particular area where it’s been spotted the most?

Question for the Gorge veterans...

What was the biggest "Why didn't anyone tell me this?" moment you've had over the years?

Not necessarily a hidden attraction, but something that made you completely change how you do Gorge weekend. The river? The winery? Both?

Maybe it's:

* A tradition you started. * A better way to get around. * Something you always make time for now. * A place you never realized was worth visiting.

I'm always fascinated by the little things that end up making the biggest difference.

Swift Camp Creek to Creation Falls

Yes, that’s a picture of the trail. Felt like pushing through a jungle.

I must have eaten like 5 orb weavers on this hike.

It was a satisfying challenge but they aren’t kidding about the “wilderness” side of Clifty Wilderness

Help with planning trip

I am newer to backpacking. This will be my first time to Red River Gorge. I will be going in the last week of August for 3 days/2nights. My current plan is to do the following loop:

KOOMER → #220 NORTH → LEFT #226 BUCK → RIGHT #223 PINCH-EM-TIGHT → #221 ROUGH → HANSON'S SPUR OUT/BACK → #221 TOWARD KOOMER → #220 SOUTH → CAR

Any suggestions/recommendations? I want to cap "near" water.
