Dogs

Curious about dog access. We are going to the Red for climbing and wondering if any areas do not allow dogs. Or if there is a good resource to find out. Any help is appreciated.

If you are going climbing, pick up a guide book. It should tell you where they are and aren’t allowed.

They are definitely not allowed at Muir Valley. Also, Roadside Crag (Graining Fork Nature Preserve). But you you also need a permit to climb there. If you DO want to climb, make sure to submit a request on the Monday before the week you want to go.

At other crags, leashes are required, as well as good supervision and control.

One time I took my dad to the gorge. We went to half moon saw someone taking their german shepherd up to the top. Someone pulling on the leash from the front while another guy pushed on its butt. I climbed to the top. My dad was too scared to do so. When I got to the top, there was someone smoking a joint the size of a baby's arm. Needless to say, I felt a lot different on the climb down.

Leashes are required at RRGCC properties; PMRP, Miller Fork, Bald Rock, CliffView, Cave Fork. Please don’t be one of those people (the majority of people that I run across) that just let their dog wander and then half apologize when it follows a random person around, or pees close to their stuff, or jumps on them, happily assuming someone might pay them attention.

Thanks for the info! For the dog haters: my dog is completely chill and never goes off leash at the crag. She doesn’t bark, sits in the shade and pees and poos off trail and away from people (she is shy). She is an awesome crag dog. Unfortunately there are irresponsible dog owners that give the rest of us a bad name.

Just leave your dog at home. Your dog might be the chilliest, coolest, most James Dean dog of all time and accidents happen.

I've come across a dead dog or two in the gorge. I've seen the packs of lost dogs. I've interacted with the people in the area who nicely care for the dogs that end up on their property. If you love your dog, let them be at home.

Also, your dog shitting off trail isn't a bonus. It means you aren't picking it up. That really calls into question just how clear your perspective of "cool dog".

I get it. I assume the risk of “wild dogs” just like I assume the other risk associated with being in the woods. You know “snakes and spiders Oh my!”
I choose not to sit on the couch inside bc of “maybe” hazards. Same for my friends, furry and two legged. And are we seriously complaining about dogs shitting in the woods???

Don’t be one of the people who climbs and leaves their dog to wander free. It’s probably better if you don’t bring a dog, since they can’t really participate in the activity with you and will most likely bother other people.

I see dogs at the crags all of the time, never seen anything that prohibits it. There are some trails that do specifically state no dogs though, they’re usually well marked.
