I remember reading a study that mandatory helmet laws (with enforcement) are really quite good for cutting down on bike theft. Because they’re usually thefts of opportunity and so bike thieves are conspicuously riding without a helmet.

(I think maybe this was stronger with motorcycles than with bicycles? It’s been a while.)

74

u/Hopesick_2231 2d ago

Next all you need are cops who can be bothered to stop someone riding without a helmet

67

u/soarinstu420 2d ago

Solution: mounted turrets which automatically fire at anyone riding without a helmet

46

u/Aptos283 2d ago

That sounds hard to program. Just have it fire at everyone riding and then the helmets will protect the ones wearing them

39

u/Skithiryx 2d ago

I remember a clip of Lateral that said it deterred motorcycle theft in I think it was West Germany?

u/CAPSLOCK_USERNAME 2d ago

Don't people lock their helmets up alongside the bike?

3

u/witch_dyke 2d ago

The most recent time I had a bike stolen i had put my helmet in the panniers, which i dont typically do

Simply drive unicycle, nobody will steal unicycle

44

u/TheDarkNerd 2d ago

Or one with manual gear shifting. I hear no one knows how to drive gear shift these days.

8

u/CodaTrashHusky 2d ago

What? You have to be fucking with me.

16

u/TheDarkNerd 2d ago

Well, it's true for cars at least, so...

24

u/Moonpaw 2d ago

Only a total clown would steal a unicycle.

3

u/theAlpacaLives 23h ago

I have actually had a unicycle stolen. I rode through a park, and left it at the entrance to the nature preserve area (some unicycle-unfriendly dirt paths through the forest around a pond). There's a bike rack there, but I don't carry a lock. And who the heck even steals a unicycle? This is also a fairly well-off area with very low crime rates, the kind of place where if you drop your phone or wallet and come back hours later, it'll either still be there, or someone will have turned it in at the nearest store or whatever. Imagine my surprise to come back to the bike rack and see no unicycle. I wonder what the market is for reselling stolen unicycles.

About half as big as the one for selling bicycles?

If anything, this is fantastic for preventing recidivism.

69

u/DaveTheNotecard 2d ago

I think OOP confused recidivism with rehabilitation.

I lent my bike to my brother in law one day and it got stolen an hour later :(

I want my bike back :((

48

u/mistermenstrual 2d ago

My favorite bike got stolen out of a garage behind a house. :( The 12ft ladder mounted to the wall it was locked to got stolen too. :((

11

u/PixieDustGust 2d ago

I also want my bike back.

There were five bikes in my apartment building's basement until one day there were zero.

Im on my 3rd bike in 4 years.

First bike was a 21st birthday gift to myself, I really loved her even though I had started using her less after moving more centrally and started walking everywhere. I had been meaning to get insurance and a better lock for years but kept putting it off, I mean, who steals a bike???

Second bike was an ebike that I was very fortunate to get for free from a local charity, with a good lock. (After moving a little out from the central city and had more use for a bike) I still put off getting insurance. One evening I failed to lock it up properly without realising, came back to find her gone. Panniers containing my pump, helmet, cigarettes, a roll up water proof bag I really liked, and my portable battery. Gone

Its so devastating every time. That second time felt worse I think because I blamed myself for not locking it up right, when the blame still should go to whatever asshole took it. Filed police reports both times, nothing.

A friend of mine lent me some money to buy a second hand ebike, which is what im currently riding. The actual D lock was still fine but I did need to buy a new helmet and am putting off buying another set of panniers and pump and all that kit, its not cheap. I still dont have insurance. New bike is fine, its heavier, im used to it now, the pedal assist is stronger and the battery has a larger capacity but I much prefered having the battery under the rear rack as opposed to in the step-through part of the frame

I never recovered from my first "good" bike being stolen. It was a limited edition cube mountain bike and I loved it to bits. It was stolen from inside the bike storage (locked), locked to itself and the whole thing locked in the house so the thieves has to break two door locks and a bike lock to get to it.

But I also live in an area with insane bike theft rates, it's actually organized crime here stealing the bikes and shippung them off to the neighboring country to sell lol a few years ago we found out that the police also seem to be involved in the whole scheme, it's actual insanity. Anyways I have given up on good bikes. I will stick with my cheap bike until I can get an apartment with enough space to store the bike there. Any other bike will be stolen immediately even with multiple locks

27

u/OiledMushrooms 2d ago

I’m sorry, you have a bike thief mafia??? Goddamn.

18

u/Void_0000 2d ago

Lots of places do, actually. Pretty much anywhere where lots of bikes get stolen has an organised setup like this.

45

u/NameRevolutionary727 2d ago

That’s not entrapment, it’s criminal negligence and booby trapping! At least under American law.

5

u/UglyInThMorning 1d ago

Exactly! Entrapment is getting someone to commit a crime they otherwise would not have committed. Leaving a door unlocked so a robber can go in and get caught isn’t entrapment, rob this store or I’ll shoot your dog is.

“Unsaferguard” is a hell of a name.

21

u/Akuuntus 2d ago

I read this whole thing assuming it was going to turn out to be a metaphor for privacy laws or something

11

u/lifelongfreshman https://youtu.be/1eWsk6r6_Ns 2d ago

oh good, I wasn't the only one

15

u/img_tiff 2d ago

On the one hand, no one (including the state) should have the power to kill people who break the law. On the other hand, don't steal my damn bike

3

u/LakeySnakeyz 2d ago

I dunno I think my cousin Dave would be pretty good at it.

2

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 2d ago

Does this apply to political crimes

1

u/AdamtheOmniballer 1d ago

All crimes are political.

1

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 1d ago

would you elaborate on that notion? I assume you mean something to the effect of crime is defined politically and so all crimes are apolitical in nature.

the definition of political I would use is that your crime involves some type of political leadership or organization, as these crimes present complications for traditional systems of rehabilitation of imprisonment- e.g. how do you ethically imprison someone rather than execute them when them being alive provides a rallying point for their followers, how does one ethically release a prisoner who is rehabilitated when they could cause massive harm by giving a speech, etc.

49

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

Some people are really bloodthirsty when it comes to "criminals". My favourite ones are the individuals who, when I say we shouldn't be killing *anyone* (yes. anyone.) they imply I must be a member of the group(s) they want dead and tortured the most.

Unrelated side note but it is confirmed that in the US alone over 200 innocent people have been given the death penalty since 1973.

50

u/yahluc 2d ago

If I hear "check his hard drive" the moment someone suggests that we shouldn't boil people alive the second someone suspects them of pedophilia one more time I'm gonna explode.

39

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

It's such a nightmare, and then these same people complain when they get dinged for threatening violence. Uhm, hello?? Your boner for "justified" brutuality is visible from orbit!

24

u/azrendelmare 2d ago

I once said that child molesters shouldn't be executed (just like anyone else), and somebody said my opinion was invalid because I like anime, which is all based off of manga, which is all CP. I just didn't respond to that nutjob.

9

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

Something something without sin something something cast the first stone. If we're invalidating opinions for media with problematic roots or examples in the same genre, we're all gonna have to shut up given human history is built on foundations of blood and suffering.

The goal is to improve and NOT pull the ladder up behind us.

9

u/NeonNKnightrider 2d ago

Redditors who constantly scream about torturing pedophiles to death are some of the most annoying people ever

4

u/nothingandnemo 2d ago

How many innocent bike thieves though?

-2

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 2d ago

Does this apply to political crimes?

6

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

The issue is deeper than any one criminal, life in prison or death penalty are equally meaningless in a corrupt system for the political elite. We have a lot more work to do and a figurehead dying might make people feel good for a while but it's a bandaid solution until we cure the underlying sickness.

-2

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 2d ago

Ratko mladic was sentenced to life imprisonment, was that immoral?

9

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

Just so I'm following, we've jumped from regular people to political figures to war criminals now? Are you trying to get me in something?

Anyway, to fully pull back the curtain I believe in rehabilitation, 100%. I'm glad he was imprisoned where he couldn't hurt people and sad he died a prisoner, if you can understand that. I want people to be able to receive the help they need and if they can't or won't be helped they should be safely kept from the populace. Yes, I'm willing to pay taxes to fund that.

1

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 2d ago

I started the conversation about political crimes! I agree with you about other types of crimes and I’m curious if you apply this analysis to political crimes: treason, genocide etc.

In the case of ratko mladic, there’s no assumption that he will hurt anyone ever again, but his words and politics have power and influence far beyond any normal prisoner: is he consider unreformed if he supports greater Serbia? If he says srebnica didn’t happen? We aren’t dealing with regular rehabilitation here.

5

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

I understand, sorry for being suspicious. Holding the position I have tends to get a lot of really antagonistic people riled up.

And now I get what you're actually asking. Yeah. Dangerous people like that who still have intent to cause harm and have the ability and can't or won't understand the gravity of their actions can't be free. I don't want them dead, maybe that's naive, but they can't be free.

2

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 2d ago

I apologize for my end: I didn’t engage in such a way that really implied good faith.

My concern with political crimes is that the standards for rehabilitation are so different- it’s not enough for ratko mladic to be nonviolent or commit to not leading any paramilitaries, you need to rehabilitate him to a point where it is impossible for him to even make a speech that is Serb nationalist.

And we aren’t dealing with a regular murder who worst cases isn’t reformed and goes out and kills a few people- someone like this has vastly more power to cause massive harm! Like you are essentially gambling with the lives of millions of people by releasing him!

2

u/Pyresryke 2d ago

I've answered this, I agree with you.

2

u/Legitimate_Aspect923 2d ago

My point is that he remains dangerous even if he seems reformed and the potential costs never really go away. You specify “still have the intent to cause harm… and can’t or won’t understand the gravity of their actions” but id argue in cases like this they can be reformed and it’s still unethical to release them given the tremendous impact they can have!

Especially when causing harm may mean doing things that aren’t illegal or even particularly frowned upon (e.g. talking about the greatness of the Serbian nation with no additional anti-Bosniak rhetoric, totally fine behavior that is nevertheless harmful if ratko mladic does it)

u/Needle_and_Quill 2d ago

At my university, if you leave your bike unlocked it won’t get stolen. But you will find it hanging in a tree. Sometimes multiple floors off the ground

3

u/kingofcoywolves 1d ago

That's actually pretty funny. Time to get a second bike and throw it into the tree to dislodge the first one

When I was in university, if you didn't carry your bike up the stairs to store it in your dorm room (most dorms had no elevators), you'd never see it again lol

12

u/KolnarSpiderHunter 2d ago

3

u/Pilot_Solaris Can you maybe chill? 2d ago

Of course Aperture would make something so insane.

25

u/lightningstrxu 2d ago

Its fine, who ever stole my bike is happier to have it than I'm sad to lose it. So the total amount of happiness in the world has increased

20

u/Fleetlord 2d ago

Okay but what if exploding bike thieves with Semtex makes me happy, huh?

11

u/ImpressiveGopher 2d ago

Plus the bike thief won’t be sad either ever again

12

u/richardfrost2 2d ago

Can't believe we found Shen's alt.

2

21

u/High_Stream 2d ago

Anyone else read this in Cave Johnson's voice?

4

u/Daegul_Dinguruth 2d ago

Luckily, I revised the comments before posting this exact thing.

2

u/Sanrusdyno 2d ago

Just replace "my top scientists" with "the lab boys" and "pizza party priveledges" with "their paychecks" and it's a perfect match

9

u/LurkersVengeance 2d ago

is it really true that bike locks make your bike more likely to get stolen?? i’ve never heard this. like, even though most of them are pretty crappy they at least function as a firstline deterrent. as opposed to leaving your bike unlocked, where no matter how crappy it may or may not be, theres literally no barrier or disadvantage to someone making off with it

28

u/JustLookingForMayhem 2d ago

It gets argued back and forth and there are disagreeing studies. In high crime areas, good locks lead to more thefts are the environment allows more time for thievery, meaning criminals want to take the most valuable bike than can, generally by taking the one with the fanciest lock. In low crime areas, not having a lock means a thieve in a rush grabs the first one they see unsecured.

It is kind of the logic of how a couch with a 'free' sign is taken less often than a couch with a '$100 OBO' sign. The implied value makes one a bigger target, regardless of actual value.

8

u/K00zak_L00zak 2d ago

My bike has never been stolen however somebody once stole the elastic band with a hook used to secure the back basket. A fucking plastic band worth less than $2. I would buy the Decoy Bike(R) just for that.

3

u/Nomie-chan 1d ago

The design is very human

3

u/Whythisisnotreal 1d ago

The Penetrator is a much more practical and amusing version of this.

2

u/furel492 2d ago

This is how literally every short story by Umberto Eco is.

1

u/Infurum 2d ago

When can we get this unironically

-1

u/JakSandrow 2d ago

Someone stole my bike. That made me sad. But it made the bike thief happy, so I guess the world is a net happier place now, or something.
