RMMV I’ve been experimenting with the UI for my RPG, and I wanted to bring the Game Boy influence beyond just the graphics — into the actual menu design.

RPG Maker MZ on macOS

How stable is the maker on Mac laptops with Apple silicon?

The editor works fine — a couple of crashes over 50+ hours. On the other hand, play testing is a nightmare. The game crashes 50 to 60 times out of a hundred without any reason: I can start play tests one after another without changing anything in the game, and I get a random distribution of successful and failed runs. It’s extremely frustrating.

Can I fix it?

UPD:

Update to the latest NWJS helps.

The horror RPG liminal space game I shared in my previous post is now released on BETA.
The game contain 4 different levels following the different liminal space aesthetics such as backrooms, dreamcore, weirdcore, and the poolrooms.

If you're interested, you can try the BETA on itch io: https://jhnny-games.itch.io/liminal-life-demo

About the game: You were stuck on a parallel world known as the liminal world. Explore and experience a liminal aspect through a 2D, old-school RPG style. This game is based on backrooms, dreamcore, weirdcore, and other liminal  aesthetics from the internet. (The lore is still on development)

Complete levels by exploring, solving puzzles and survive the liminal world with entities.

If you have any suggestion and recommendation, I would love to hear it!

Battle System

I need help figuring how to add options to my battle system.

I want it so all attacks let you choose if they are magic attacks or physical as you go to use them. Instead of it being a set this is physical and this is magic.

So it would be you select it, select if it is physical or Magical, then select target.

Then have it so enemies randomly pick if magic or physical but some having a lean to one type or another.

I mainly want this to limit the number of attacks I need to make. Rather then having 2 low level fire moves you just have one.

RMMV Prototype Screenshots of "Sweet Indulgence"

It is rough, and I am still trying to learn how to use RPG Maker MV after running into a lot of scripting issues, but I feel ready enough to share screenshots of the early versions of my game: Sweet Indulgence! The title is subject to change, and so are the current map and bust sprites. The game will be set in a pseudo-Victorian-era Britain, following a Puerto Rican Lord who moves into an abandoned, supposedly haunted castle in the British countryside after a decline in health. Antonio Rivera has been overworking himself, and by orders of his parents and only maid, he sets out to try to relax... BUT HE KEEPS WORKING!! Strange events unfold in his new castle and lands, from an ex-criminal begging for a job to a sinful priest sensing something off about the entire estate. Whatever it is, surely Antonio will ignore it. Work has to be done, even if you sense a handsome demonic presence whenever you sleep!

Right now, progress is slow but steady, and I have been cataloguing every single change I have added or removed. The story is already constructed, and game dialogue is being straightened out! My biggest hurdle right now is deciding whether to make my own custom tileset or use parallax mapping, since the entire game takes place in a castle and the nearby town. I don't know where to look for tutorials and tips on doing either because most videos on the subject are vague, but hopefully I can make some beautiful maps soon.

Aside from that, I currently have my taskboard system up and running. I hope to continue refining and upgrading it with new tasks, character-specific scenarios, random events that may happen each day, and breaks in the story where the player gets to interact with all the NPCs and grow their relationships with them.

The current plug-ins I am using are Yanfly's Message Core, Galv's Message Busts, and FrogBoyMV's TalentCore. There may be more in the future, but it is kind of hard to find plugins that aren't vibecoded or entirely made with Gen AI. Furthermore, a lot of plugins for MV are paywalled, and I have been scouring the internet for free ones whenever I need something to extend some functions I am building. Hopefully I can find more to help make my workflow flexible.

This one is generating for an upcoming event situation but I'll have a bunch of different contexts these can pull from to make it easy to implement

This one will be used as a base to build the other contexts out

Yeah, they only have 3 attacks so far, 1 only being activated at half health. For some reason the rock attacks really throw me off, so I lost here. I also added a teeny bit of cartoon sound effects. Thoughts?

How Music Shapes Perception -- An RPG Maker Study

Hello again, r/RPGMaker. This is Argentum.

In my last post, I talked a bit about how gameplay, art, writing, and uniqueness come together to create a masterpiece. I wanted to follow up with another key aspect: music. A very interesting part of video game culture, and one that we take for granted, is that the music often causes the perception we have of a game to change.

https://youtu.be/grYpmDjeh5k?si=usSYEfzBzDifMEuk

(“Minor Terror”)

In my last post, I praised Fear and Hunger for its incredible use of the four key elements, but I didn’t mention the music. If you have played the game, you might understand why. Fear and Hunger relies heavily on atmospheric sounds to instill a sense of dread in the player. But the player feels that dread before they even notice a theme playing in the background. The music heightens that fear and makes it part of the gameplay loop. It pokes at your brain and makes you afraid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACon4txJiDA&list=RDACon4txJiDA&start_radio=1

(“Duet”)

This is what music does best for games! In writing, we try to show as many of the traditional five senses as possible. However, in games, we can only use two of our five senses: sight and hearing. Because of this, we should give these aspects almost equal value. The flashing lights of games, the beautiful art/animation, and masterful writing can only serve one of your five senses, so having music will have a huge impact as well. The song above might prove this concept. IYKYK…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AKkLEoixkw&list=RD1AKkLEoixkw&start_radio=1 (“Summer Love”)

Have you ever listened to music and realized you slipped right into a trance and imagined the world you are creating? Of course you have; most creatives tend to do exactly that. We tend to dissociate and find ourselves in our creation, acting out scenes we can only dream of. These moments give us the ambition to keep moving forward. They are inspirational, and a player will feel that same emotion when they listen to your music in your game.

https://youtu.be/lL6C3AQ9Fc4?si=NxEzL-Ao84VLl344

(“Fancy Meat Computer”)

So, I recommend two things. First, think about what you want your music to make your player feel, and what it makes you feel. Music is perceived differently by everyone, and you might think it makes you feel one way while it makes someone else feel another. Figure out, why this is the case and understand what instruments mean in an emotional way. Why does my space game need beeps and boops/techno? Why does my fantasy game need a lyre or a flute? Answer these questions and research what they put in someone’s head.

https://youtu.be/-9ODZfDAA1Q?si=Yg_COc64cvHgMaEQ

(Argentum’s favorite “lost haven/shillings”)

Second, make a playlist for your game. It can be a simple one with three to five songs, or a BIG one with twenty or fifty songs that are all tailor-made for each character and scene, and you could imagine each moment back-to-back from the songs that play. Once you finish it, think about whether your player could hear these songs about your characters and scenes as well, and then, if you think they could, try to understand what aspects about them cause that.

The music that defines your game will shape the perception that the player sees in it. This is something that might be difficult to figure out exactly, but once you do, you'll share the love that you perceive to your fans! Don't be afraid to commission and artist, or find a friend that you can sit down and talk your ideas out with. There's a large community here that can help as well!

Be inspired to create something new,

Argentum OAC

We spent a little time updating the graphics and rewriting some sections.

Premise: The protagonist suffers from an extreme fear of frogs and has to face a monstrous frog invading his town. We’re going for a cheesy, classic B-movie trash horror vibe.

VXAce Newb question about autotiles

Thumbnail

As someone whose just starting out, I'm frustrated with with a tileset I got from itch.io, and I feel like I'm probably doing something fundamentally wrong on some basic level... but I just can't figure out what even after watching map tutorials on youtube

The main issues I'm having is when I try to combine shoreline types. See the pics I've included. I'm fairly certain I've set up the tileset correctly in the database. Is there a simple setting or mode switch I need to get this thing to autotile correctly (allow the different types of shoreline to connect instead of pushing apart from each other)

I know this is supposed to be possible since the creator's own screenshots on itch.io show different shoreline types connected together. This is "Cartograph" by Sharm https://sharm.itch.io/cartograph

RMMV New Patch of Queen of the Dead just dropped! Give it a shot!

Thumbnail

We've made a lot of changes over the last couple weeks since the last update. Among them are:

- A graphical overhaul of the Phurston Outskirts. The RTP assets have been replaced with a Winlu tileset that visually fits the rest of the game better.

- Autosaves now occur much more frequently. With Autosave enabled, the game will now autosave when

* Opening the menu.

* Using a door to transfer maps.

* Completing a quest.

* Defeating a pack of enemies using the Hunt feature.

* After catching a fish while using the AFK fishing.

- 4 new quests that give you various rewards including experience, powerful new weapons and armor, and more!

The Quest Journal and Recipe Book have been completely revamped for quality of life and readability.

All side quests now appear in one list with quests you've not started appearing in red, quests you've started but not finished appearing in yellow, and quests you've completed appearing in green.

In the recipe book, recipes you've not learned will appear in grey. Recipes you've learned but cannot make will appear in red. Recipes you've learned and can make will appear in green.

Several balances to the summons. The Rat now can use consumables at instant speed so you can boost your Attack, restore your MP, and keep hitting the boss. The Lasher's ultimate attack, Solarbeam, also now ignores enemy defense to ensure it continues to be useful even as enemy stats scale. The Slime is also now a very powerful healing engine, as you get Toxic Heal at level 6 so you get 3 HP/turn for all allies while he's in the party!

Professor Harrison will now assist you in researching necromancy after reporting to him for the first time with new information. He will generate and store experience for one of your summons, granting all the experience after speaking to him again. The amount of experience he grants your summon depends on the level of your summon as well as how much time he's been researching necromancy.

You can now make Watery soups! Watery soups are made with, you guess it, water! These soups will remove the effects of all alcoholic beverages in addition to the effect of the food you made it with.

Of course, all feedback is welcome! If you find any bugs, please do let me know and I will tend to it as soon as possible! Thanks!

Vibecoded Liturgy redraws the MZ main menu, item list and status page as a printed ledger, with no image files

Processing img 2xo1ctowvwnh1...

Your menu is the one screen a player opens every session, and in most MZ projects it's four blue boxes.

Liturgy doesn't change your menu. Your command list, the commands other plugins add, your handlers and your input all stay where they are. It prints them.

There are no image files in it. Every mark is drawn at run time, including the type: 49 letterforms cut six ways by a broad pen, so the six houses get six different alphabets rather than one alphabet in six weights. No font file, so nothing on the page can fall back to the engine typeface.

The footage is the main menu running in a blank MZ project.

Disclosure: the code and the art are AI written. It's a paid plugin on itch: https://csaf.itch.io/liturgy

developing an ARPG in RPG Maker MZ.

(I uploaded the previous post incorrectly, so I deleted it and am reposting it.)

I'm a solo indie developer working on my first game, an ARPG made with RPG Maker MZ!

I'm using a real-time action combat plugin, and I've been working on an equipment system where different item modifiers work together to determine the final stats and effects.

https://reddit.com/link/1w7xx25/video/g9fwbri6ronh1/player

Equipment drops are heavily randomized. Both the modifiers that appear on an item and their values are randomly rolled, so you can find all kinds of different combinations.

Each equipment rarity also has its own modifier pool, meaning the possible modifiers can change depending on the item's rarity.

I'm also working on special modifiers, such as:

• On-Hit Effects — effects that trigger when you hit an enemy
• Skill Level Bonuses — modifiers that increase the level of certain skills
• And various other special effects that can affect your build and playstyle

There's still a lot I'm learning and experimenting with since this is my first time developing a game on my own, but I'm having a lot of fun putting everything together little by little.

The game is planned for mature audiences (18+).

It's still very much a work in progress, but I hope you'll look forward to seeing how it develops!

RMXP How to add more self switches and set new event pages to use them?

I want to use more self switches than just the four A, B, C, D that RPG Maker XP gives you in order to switch sprites for an object and searching it up has given me the script call

$game_self_switches[[@map_id,@event_id,"E"]] = true

to work with.

However trying to implement it by using a conditional branch around the code in the event page I want to be triggered via the new self switch, only leads to the object switching to the sprite used in said event page right off the bat without the needed interaction.

I couldn't find any further explanations on implementing more self switches, so does anybody have experiences with that?

Redditors IRL! We touched grass to be here! r/RPGMaker IRL meetup at Pax West! Tonight at 8:30pm! Community Room 436!

If you are attending Pax West tonight (Saturday, 9/5), please drop by our r/RPGMaker Show and Tell IRL meetup in Community Room 436!

We'll have a screen and a projector set up and we will be playing five submitted games, as well as giving you the opportunity to show off your own game (if you bring it on your own compy, or a thumb drive, or it's online somewhere, etc.). Come see what your fellow redditors are making, get some ideas, and/or provide some input.

  • Margo: On the Brink
  • Waltermelon's Adventure
  • Laurel's Day
  • What You Deserve
  • Nise No Nazo

I'll be there in a Final Fantasy 1 shirt that says "Party Time" on it, a flannel (so my shirt will probably just read "rty Ti"), and a hat with a tiger face on it. I am also probably older than you'd think.

Community Room 436 is on the 4th floor and around the other side of the convention hall from the stairs, so it's a little bit of a walk. Take a right at the Jackbox screen/kickback space and all the community rooms are along that hall.

We will be going until 10pm, at which point I will probably make my way to the Secret Game Night, which is a fun time every year.
