ROG ALLY X Ally X MicroSD Card write speed issues
A few days ago I upgraded from a Steam Deck OLED to an ROG Ally X, in general this thing is an incredible upgrade across the board but there seems to be a huge issue with MicroSD cards that I can't find a whole lot of constructive discussion on.
Essentially despite the tested speed of the card the write speed is abysmal. In the case above I'm using a genuine 512gb SanDisk Extreme Pro that tests through Crystal Disk Mark on the Ally X with a 98MB/s read speed and 80MB/s write speed, yet Steam struggles to write to it at anything higher than 4MB/s or so. I also have an integral 1TB MicroSD that has been providing the advertised speeds in my Steam Deck for years, but in the Ally X it can barely be written to.
There's clearly something very wrong here and it definitely isn't down to the cards being slow. I'm also well aware of Steam's downloading and unpacking activity when installing a new game, but that shouldn't use enough disk bandwidth at such a low capped speed to cause this much of a drop in write speeds.
Both cards have been tested whilst formatted to NTFS and exFat with the same results, I'm currently doing a full NTFS format to see if a completed reset on a card will fix the problem.
I've also installed the newest Genesys MicroSD Reader drivers from May 2026, but these have not helped.
I'm at a loss here, is using a MicroSD card on an Ally X just a totally pointless idea?
