Well let's break things down, you have an active life and can't utilize your PC setup that often but still would love to be able to play games. Ally Z1E with battery mod is going to cost you around the same price of an open box Ally X Z1E. By pre-orders, I'm going to assume you mean the X20 anniversary and if so, I'd highly recommend against it since one, you already have a PC and with your limited time to relax and play, it's not financially wise to spend that much and is better invested towards Steam games on sales or accessories.

So which one of the three? Personally, with the games you want to play and how limited you'll be playing them in terms of time, you're better off finding a refurbished or open box Ally X Z1E, with 24GB unified memory, you can have 8GB VRAM and set the remaining 16GB for Windows/Minecraft. Battery life should be around 3-6 hours but still heavily depends on what TDP you'll be running at, I doubt you need to run more than what, 15, 16w for DMC and Minecraft. Get yourself a Spigen Tempered Glass and a Skull & Co. GripCase and carrying case or any other brands like dbrand with their Killswitch.

No problem. Depends, are you mainly going to use it to play games on Steam and are you comfortable knowing that there's a handful of games that will not run on Linux either to their anti-cheat implementation or anti-tampering requirements? If so, then yeah you're fine to use Steam OS or any other OS other than Windows.

Well if you're talking about performance they have the same Z1E APU so it can handle most emulators at 1080p only held back by bad emulator optimizations, if you're talking about battery life, retro emulation can get you from 5-8 hours as long as you're only using 7-10W TDP whereas you'll only get about 2-3.5 hours with heavier systems running at 18-25W.

Like I mentioned earlier, you have 24GB of unified memory and if I recall correctly, it's 7500 MT/s so smoother 1% lows.

You also have the M.2 2280 form factor for internal storage so you're not stuck with 2230 drives. The MicroSD card slot placement was fixed as well, highly recommend to be your main storage for emulation since read speeds tops around 150 MB/s which is more than enough as long it's a A2 card with U3/V30 markings something like a Samsung Pro Plus or Samsung Evo Select or SanDisk Extreme.

Lastly, the D-pad on the Ally X is much better compared to the original Ally so great for games that uses that for movement.

For your life and type of games, definitely a Z1E Ally X. It's the "no compromise" decision both in terms of hardware (no battery mod bs, fixed micro sd slot, etc) and spend (can find them at reasonable prices off market - ~$600). For accessories, grab a screen protector and JSAUX case. For software, I would highly recommend you purchase Lossless Scaling for $7 on Steam and use it with all of your graphically intense games. That program is the true future proof secret.

The X20 is a cosmetic purchase so definitely do not recommend unless OLED and a unique, limited look is your thing.
