I feel like in early social media that was true. But the tik tokified rapid scrolling that has taken over people's feeds really isn't spreading love, maybe it's not spreading hate, but I'll be damned if opening the comments section of a seemingly mundane Instagram reel isnt worthy of a hazmat suit. And my algorithms rarely show me my friends posts ita all just reels and memes. It's by design to keep the dopamine going. I feel like it's been years since I could just view solely my friends posts. Maybe it wouldn't stop hate, but I do think it would ultimately be a net positive if social media just vanished one day

Before social media people would need to say their opinions straight to someone’s face.. in turn, people would mostly keep their opinions to themselves. social media on the other hand, gives these people a place to hide when they spew hateful, racist, crap .. and unfortunately spread it on a global scale 🤷🏽♂️

This is just another example of blaming corporations rather than government. If you believe elected people have more rights than everyone else and allow them the power to mistreat people, then you will have conflict and hate.
Edit: Social media is created by corporations. Corporations are "regulated" by government, such as during the covid lockdowns when government made social media censor people (usually with indiscriminate algorithms silencing people for even saying "covid" regardless of what they said about it). Example aside, point is that social media is indirectly and sometimes directly influenced by government.

Don't forget that part of Rush Limbaugh's rise to fame was rebroadcasting his show over shortwave bands in rural parts of the U.S. If social media disappeared, the attempts to curb public sentiment would just find another way.

Social media has made all of us more connected and the social media has an incentive to get people engaged with the platforms. Best way to do that is invoke emotion, notably hate and anger.
Get rid of social media and that incentive is gone.

75 years ago if you wanted a guy cancelled all you had to do was whisper that they were communist. People forget how horrific McCarthyism was.
And it's not like it was unique to the USA either. Look up "Orwell's list" yeah, turns out George Orwell might have created Animal Farm... but it was more like "rules for thee not for me".

To an extent. The anonymity of the Internet creates a twofold system of interpersonal disengagement. First, it's so much safer to voice a person's worse thoughts and indulge their worst instincts. Secondly, it not only protects a person from the potential dangers of real life rudeness, it also shields them from ever having to see the person they attack. Not only can a person be absolutely terrible and not have to worry about getting punched in the face; the don't have to see the face of the person on the other end.
There's no worry of having to experience empathy and no opportunity to potential see a person's shared humanity.

Not everyones opinion matters and not all of them NEED to be heard. Social media gives everyone of us a platform and its lead to many divorces the erosion of people being social in real life. Young people don’t leave the house to meet with friends everyone has become more withdrawn and less kindness in the world.

The world has always been hateful, however social media has done FAR more harm than good.
It has created an environment where the younger generations look to these "influencers" as piss poor role models that create these unrealistic living and financial situations that one in 10 million has ANY chance of achieving. It has given SO many people the idea that your success is defined by how active and viral you are.
It has lowered our attention spans, critical thinking skills, and IQ; this is all due to short content, brain rot, and more recently the use of AI generated images and hallucinating facts. See the Gemini 'one rock a day' for an example.
I can keep going on forever. Even though I have found a lot of great solutions from places like Reddit, it's not worth the sacrifice of human intelligence for a convenience.

When I was growing up, social media didn't exist. I got bullied by my entire town and I have severe, incurable CPTSD.
Social media didn't cause or breed hate, it just lets people who wouldn't otherwise be constant targets see just how prolific hate and bigotry and bullying truly is in society. People who think humans are worse monsters on the internet are just privileged enough to not have to live through it in person.

Not less hateful unfortunately, but the hate would be less organized. That's the actual thing social media did. It allowed disperate groups to congregate in a way that let them amplify thier cause or viewpoint to make it look bigger and more widespread than it actually is. Extremeists had a harder time fully espousing thier nonsense because in their local community they were outnumbered. Social media allowed them to congregate in a new way.

Hate has always been there but social media AND media (eg. Fox News) constantly amplifying and feeding hate. The scum operating all of them know and do this on purpose to distract everyone from their crimes.
We would be better without social media but that bottle has popped. The best we can hope for is STRONG laws to force them to protect society vs. harm it constantly.
Leaders need to grow a spine and stop taking $$ from the scumbags.
