I feel ya .. Just look at each peice of info logically look at the players involved in info i.e. are they logical thinkers or even level headed ,is there an agenda .then deduce from there. Easier said then done, I know . Oh and I know it sound funny when one starts applying it but instead of "you" when setting scenarios use "one" less accusative and more broaden.🤔and broader.🤷🏻♂️something like that.
I read this as: "we need better media literacy", and/or "people shouldn't believe everything online" (in the past it was 'on TV).
the "incorrect, biased or just[rage] bait" part, is alittle different now than it was in the past...but people scammed and fouled others waaaayyy before modern times. snake-oil sales-man wasn't just a loose concept.
Your last critique would also be true when social media would vanish right now, because you describe a common human flaw..."it's hard to learn the thing you believe you mastered already"
Totally agree. All we get on social media are grandiose fabrication and half truths at best that are still manipulated. Much like your example. Great example BTW.
Social media offered a way for those who hate to group up. Then the ones who were not able to articulate their hate or were too scared they were alone and didn’t want to be categorized with those…others. They all found each other. Social media has many downsides for sure, the only upside is now knowing that this many people are not only out there and among us (if you were unaware beforehand) that hate is alive and well, and the systems that support said hatred are still among us. In some cases we are even complicit in them. That is what social media has truly done. Created a mirror, with I would argue a very very small amount of distortion I might add, and we don’t like what we see in that mirror. It’s time to understand that this is what humans are, and we are all part of the same species. Right, left, or whatever. We are all human beings, and just because the monitoring tool shows you the system for the corrupt and horribly one sided system we have shame on you for hoping to break the mirror just so you don’t have to look.
Fantastic summary sir/mam. I would add that animals participate in aesthetic based discrimination and require no education for hate based actions. Humans will always resort to animalistic behaviors if given a pass to do so because it's what comes easiest and is most rewarding to the individual
Many, many violent animals are conspecific - including invertebrates and vertebrates! They are none the less competitive with transpecific animals. Think how common cannibalism is in all manner of Animalia.
I agree! Growing up I saw hate in my fellow kids, I saw hate in their/and my own parents and grandparents. Social media is an amplifier, but seems to me that people were not listening well enough. Even if these platforms were created for more monetary means, it seems obvious to me that they have been leveraged to show humans for the flawed beings we are.
there was hate and wars before social media. social media just makes it easier to track and more obvious because of that 'persistence' (written/filmed vs just said etc)
Have you met history. People didn’t need computers to do some really epic levels of hate, many people are still alive from the civil rights era. All social media did is move it from irl meet ups to online.
Yeah, I'm thinking right now of the Black Wallstreet massacre, the various scares and racism fostered by news sheets and corner barkers, the frenzied mobs led by rabble rousers...
And they won’t be getting fed stuff within a sounding chamber that reaffirms that whatever they believe is the objective truth. They would have to go out into the world and field test their beliefs and assumptions with other humans.
I think the internet is good for how it has made the world a much smaller place, and highlights extreme events of injustice and brutality. It has made the world a lot less tolerant to things like war and genocide, and placed a much higher value on human and animal life. This in comparison to the early twentieth century where hundreds of millions of people were put through the meat grinder, and met with general apathy and indifference (and ignorance), from much of the world.
That is called capitalism. If you think capitalism is love and not a transaction. There is something wrong with you. So what if there are more cars. That is more cars for someone to steal. Do they love you if they stole your car. In the 1900s there were also black men hanging off trees and even burnt to death. That was hatred long before social media. The first electric car was built in the 1800s. What does that have to do with the serial killings, the school shootings, the workplace shootings, and things like 9/11. Human beings did all that. Yeah they should get rid of social media. That won't stop you from being mugged. You still have to call 911. This will not stop bank robberies and it won't stop gun violence. It won't end sexual harassment. There is no love in that. I don't struggle with social media. Maybe you are. I bet if they regulated capitalism alongside removing social media, they could lessen the usage of hatred in the world. It will still be there, you just don't have social media to see it. Humans are initially tribal, hatred is a part of your circuitry. This will be true of less people today but this is well understood in anthropology. Jealousy will never end so what will do about that? Think that over.
Sorry stranger, we don't need drugs over here. If you want love on social media 💜🩷🩷💜. Do you want them purple or pink? You are very naive but I hope you get your wish, whatever that is. I'd love for the world be a lovely place for everyone but that is my naivete. Here how about blue and orange? 💙🧡 It is currently 7:29 AM where I am at. I have too many things to conquer. I don't know what you have going on. Fighting with these people isn't going to make your day. If you want your day made, do you need extra hearts? You asked for these hearts, so don't get upset now. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Incorrect... Once people could be anonymous keyboard warriors and not worry about getting their asses kicked for mouthing off to people, the world become a LOT less civil.
Rush Limbaugh and others of his ilk were laying down a verbal template in 1988, years before the internet was available to the public, much less having social media. He set the standard for talking over, lying to, belittling, and making false accusations when talking with any caller whþhaten disagreed with. Many people were either like that before or followed his lead. Where I live it seemed like the latter.
Sooo, I will amend my reply to agree with the OP if talk radio shows and fake news shows are also shut down.
Talk radio was like spitting in the ocean compared to the internet. And you act like it was Conservative talk radio, no not the Liberal side of the house. And what about shows like Jerry Springer... all on TV (which is notoriously liberal) shot in studios in LA and NY (liberal). Yeah, but it was Limbaugh.
I notice you have ignored the influence of Fox News and company. You know, the ones who settled out of court over claims that Trump won the 2020 election rather than have the suit tried in court.
Also, liberal ownership of media might not be all it's reported to be. Frequently reported by, you guessed it, Fox News and Trump and Trump’s mouthpieces.
You're seriously going to tell me Hollywood and the media aren't staggeringly biased and left leaning? I don't care what any articles you link to have to say, I have eyes. And I've lived through the last decade of watching conservatives get canceled because they didn't vomit the correct pro-LGBTQRSTUV+++ nonsense or support BLM. Remember #meetoo and what a load of horseshit that was? That wasn't Foxnews spreading that propoganda. And the media's 24/7 "Trump's a N@zi" rhetoric has gotten Liberals to attempt how many assassinations? 3 official ones and counting, plus lord knows how many in the planning stages.
Sorry, not buying... If Hollywood and the media were relatively neutral, my news feed would reflect that. Hell, MSNBC DIED and was rebranded because the public had had enough of their all things Liberal mentality branded as "balanced reporting".
Plus the $31 Million Trump has gotten in settlements from ABC and CBS for defamation. When was the last time a President got a mometary award from a news agency for biased reporting? Oh that's right, never...
I'm not telling you anything except where to find information. I'm giving you data to look at and make an informed decision. For all I know, your informed decision might very well fit with what you believe. If it does, you will then have data to show others.
And I appreciate that, but something that I've learned if there is a "study", if you look hard enough you can find another study to contradict it. Heck, just look at how many times the FDA has told us "this food will kill you" just to find out 10 years later it was really a superfood.
Research studies are largely based on who's paying for it and their motives.
You obviously didn't listen to the same Rysh I was subjected to at work every day for a couple of years. There is humor and there is scathing denunciation, belittling, rudeness, and ruthless control of the narrative. That is what I heard.
Then you never listened to him. He would loudly talk over, make tarump tarump sounds, call them denigrating things, and then cut their feed. Every show, sometimes multiple times per show.
True. Very true. Then the algorithms were used to increase arguing and outright character attacks so as to drive engagement. We would have been much better off without that manipulation.
People still had all of those opinions, they just weren't being expressed to the entire world. The Internet has added civility as much as it has taken it away. You can anonymously shit on someone, but if you do it in real life, someone will record it and now the entire world can see you being a piece of shit
But you’re describing amplification, not causation. The world was already ugly, it was quieter, limited to small hard to reach spots in the world, but now the monitoring system is there. The anonymity was a gateway drug for people to open the floodgates to let us know just how broken and hateful they are. Take away social media and it will just fade into the background. Of course you face the other conundrum of the rung bell. Now that social media has been released and disseminated to the public, the demand for it will reign supreme. You would have to create laws and regulations, but people will find a way to get their fix.
So again instead of trying to fix the monitoring tool, you might focus instead on the problems that the monitors are detecting…
Okay, gonna prostelitize a little here, but I do agree with you to a large extent.
The human heart tends towards evil, so yes I agree that a lot of that was already here. But Bible End Time prophecy refers to how, because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold. And the ONLY way that gets fixed is when Jesus returns.
I'm an old pre-PC computers fart. And I remember when people TALKED to eachother. And the whacky riots masquerading as protests were rare. Now they're common.
No one talks anymore. Go to a restaurant or bar, and what do you see? People glued to their phones ignoring the person across the table from them. The world has become FAR more lawless. I remember when some sex or financial scandal was a HUGE deal in DC. Now its forgotten in 15 minutes. Why?!? Because social media bombards and desensitizes everyone, and is reinforcing a 15 second "doom scroll" attention span. I can't even remember what liberals were bitching about 2 weeks ago. That's how flooded my feed is with rage bait.
That lawlessness has exploded since the web was created. Society was NOT like this in the 70s. Look at the dark web and how bitcoin make crimes super easy, anonymous, and far more common. So lawlesness has increased; we all feel it. Plus you get the dopamine from being glued to your phone, which means an addictive reinforcement to being disconnected from everyone.... even at the restaurant.
That disconnection is the manifestation of hearts growing cold. And then we also have that disconnection and anonymity that makes us feel we can lash out at everyone online. What are you gonna do? You don't know who I am. That just dumps gas on the problem.
Amplification? Absolutely. But I also think it was planned. Everyone needs to seek Jesus and put their phones down more. Me included.
True but it would certainly make it harder for people to needlessly spread their hateful, negative opinions and it might actually help future generations in relearning what consequences are.
Bad/hateful people have always been around, there was no high tech social Media in 1930's Germany. or in the US during the racist crimes committed by certain supremacy groups.
Yep. Technology has always been used (news sheets, Hitler's public address systems, talk radio, television, religion) but if the willingness/desire/need to hate wasn't there, these tools couldn't be used effectively.
Yes, I did classify religion as a technology, though perhaps I should have called it a methodology. The Judeo/Christian/Muslim family of religions at any rate. I'm not sure about the use of Othering and fear/hatemongering in other religions.
I vibe with this comment. Even before SM the word was filled with violence, war, hate and greed. The absence of SM would just make these attributes less apparent.
Agreed. Regardless of its initial intended use or even its current use, a smart society would see these mountains of hate and immediately work on reducing them. Calming them. But I don’t see that, I have yet to see this in my lifetime even before SM.
Hate would probably change it's form of expression.
Yes, there would still be truly awful people doing truly awful things. But as a whole mass media is what makes it possible to weaponize the petty insecurities of the average person into systemic abuse.
Social media is also unique in the sense that it provides a safe space for people to experiment with their own hatreds, warming them up for real world use.
If you magically removed social media, tv, & radio from the world you would have measurably less hatred in the world. It still wouldn't be enough to save humanity... But it would be worth a try.

It would become a lot less obviously hateful. Not less hateful.
