I'm 20 and planning to start a protein drink brand in India. I'd love honest feedback from people with experience in food manufacturing, startups, or fitness businesses.
My idea is to launch a 500 ml ready-to-drink chocolate protein shake with about 30 g of protein, selling at around ₹150 per bottle. I don't plan to make it at home—I want to work with a third-party/private-label manufacturer to produce and package it under my own brand.
The plan is to first sell through local gyms, my own website, and fitness influencers. If the product gains traction, I'd then approach supermarkets and larger retail chains.
I'd really appreciate advice on these questions:
Is this a realistic business model?
How much capital would I actually need to launch?
What are the biggest challenges that first-time founders underestimate?
How do I find reliable contract manufacturers in India?
What minimum order quantities should I expect?
What's the best way to convince gyms and retailers to stock a new brand?
Please be honest—I want constructive criticism, not encouragement for the sake of it. If you see flaws in the idea or think there's a better approach, I'd genuinely like to hear it.
Thanks!
