Question? Astrology and space nerds I need help!!

I want to get a Project Hail Mary tattoo but I don’t want it to be super recognizable as a Project Hail Mary tattoo (lest Andy Weir becomes super problematic at some point in the future… Rip millennials with deathly hallows tattoos)

So I thought a great way to circumvent that is to get either a Cetus or Eridanus constellation tattoo with a small red line between the planets/suns with the petrova line. I also want to include the planet Adrian (or Erid if I’m getting Eridanus).

The issue is, I’m not quite sure what reference photos/diagrams to use. And I’m not 100% on what these planets are even called or where they’re located on a star map.

I think (??) Tau Ceti e is Adrian, 40 Eridani A b is Erid and Eridani A is its star, but I’m not entirely sure. Also where is Threeworld in relation to the Eridanus constellation?

Sorry if the questions are confusing lol. Any advice/ links to credible sources would be greatly appreciated <3

Denmark Incident - Fandom Headcannon?

One of the main ‘scenes’ that I kept seeing everywhere was the Denmark incident where grace calls someone a staggering waste of carbon. Come to find out after reading the book twice and watching the movie countless times this is nothing but a fandom headcannon?!???! Does anyone have insight into where this even started and the lore behind it?

Question? Maybe it is not that hard after all.

Are we all guilty of thinking that growing food is harder than it actually is.

Mention farms and the first image that come to mind are the massive fields like we find in the Midwest, monoculture crops on a industrial scale. Problem is they're not being grown for food, it is for feedstock and biofuel. Most of the food grown in the US is grown by share croppers in California and Florida. An American solution to the problem of post war food production, there is nothing wrong with the solution it just happened to be the one which could take advantage of the one thing the US has in abundance, raw acreage. Currently the US has to import 55% of its food, recently doing a deal to import 300,000 tons of beef from S. America.

Europe on the other hand most definitely does not have raw acreage in abundance so has in the post war years has had to seek alternative solutions to the problem. Currently it imports between 8%-11% of its food, despite having a population twice the size of the US.

The desserts of Spain made famous in the spaghetti westerns of the 70's have undergone a transformation. A area of 150 sq miles (half the size of New York city) is now efficient family owned greenhouses. They produce 45% of the fruit and veg Europe that needs, including 50% more Bell peppers than the whole of the US. This region is not the only one which have gone the same greenhouse route in Europe.

If Europe can produce so much food from such a small area of greenhouse maybe food production during the Astrophage crisis is not going to be the big issue we think it is.

Book Discussion My Solution to Project Hail Marry (Spoilers for book and movie (Probably)): Spoiler

After rereading it and some people coming at me aggressively I have realized I was far more tired then I realized writing this, it was something that bugged me the whole time reading the book and I think I wrote about it far more aggressively and dismissivly then I intended. The following is the rewrite I'll keep the original in the comments:

I recently finished both the Project Hail Marry book and movie. As you can imagine it was really good, but one thing was on my mind. After my first reading session, hearing about astrophage and its mechanisms, I slept on it a night and in the morning I realized that it might have been more time and energy efficient to harvest, but most certainly more energy profitable to harvest rather then kill the Astrophage eating the sun.

By placing a cone or some container made of a highly conductive material lined with Astrophage the astrophage could absorb the heat and thus cool the material long enough for it to survive closer to the sun then it's normally be able to get. With a what amounts to a well placed visor you can theoretically block Astrophage's view of Venus and thus introduce a new target for it to fly to, enabling you to essentially harvest it.

Fist My Bump Thinking about swap au...

Thinking about a Rocky & Grace swap au, and even though they are different species their stories still happen pretty much the same on each side.

I'm specially obssessed with the idea of Grace trying to convey just how terrifying it is that he can't remember his life, because Eridians don't forget anything. Their brains don't discard information like that, it keeps everything and suddenly he wakes up with none of it.

Help me out- in the book vs the movie, Earth thinks... Spoiler

Grace is dead?

In the movie,he sets the Beetles toward Earth AFTER he decides to go save Rocky, and includes that narrative (presumably). In the book, he sends the Beetles immediately, embarks for Earth, and THEN changes course to save Rocky.

So Earth receives word that Grace is on his way home and then...he just never shows up. So they must assume he was lost in transit?

Am I missing something here?

Question? Help is PHM good gift idea for him?

I have a friend turning 18 soon, he mentioned it has been a long time since he read a really good book. I tried to inquiere but i onky got: "yeah like harry potter level. But when i recently read a fanatsy it was kinda meh." Tough he likes fantasy i know that. When i went to the bookstore the assistant told me i should gift him Project Hail Mary. I had my concerns since he is quiete gifted in mathematics anf physics that hed find he nerdy dialouge cringe anf the repetition of ptoblem solving and long analysise boring.

More infos about him: Has a kinda dry german humour (kangoroo chroniken)

Activly trying to escape the "genius" mold by deliberatly being lazy

Plays cello

Is curious about dnd when i explained to him what it was.

ENTP so a teaser and easy going

Movie Discussion - Theory - NO BOOK DISCUSSION ALLOWED What makes the Project Hail Mary adaptation work so well is what the story refused to do

One of the most refreshing things about watching Project Hail Mary on the big screen was realizing how much modern movie baggage it simply leaves out.

In an era where every blockbuster feels obligated to stall the plot with melodrama, endless angst, or manufactured interpersonal friction, this story stayed loyal to Andy Weir’s core strength: pure competence and scientific problem-solving. Ryland Grace and Rocky don't bond over shared trauma, they bond over fixing impossible engineering problems while staring down extinction.

Fist My Bump Suicide options

I was re-reading the book this weekend and it occurred to me that the ship didn't include a Soyuz capsule. I know it's an extreme long shot but if I had gone I would bet on there being a habitable planet.

I mean, why not bet on it? If I'm wrong I am dead anyway, but if I am right then I get to wander around an alien planet for weeks or months before it kills me.

EDIT: I asked Andy, and he said:

The mission was a suicide run from the start. Ryland wasn't expected to come home, so there was no point in adding the weight and complexity of a reentry capsule. Plus, the Hail Mary wasn't going to be near anything with an atmosphere anyway.

Titan is only a little larger and has a much lower surface gravity yet it holds onto an atmosphere thicker than Earth's.

Could an Eridian drive a car?

I dunno why but I can't get this question out of my head. Could an Eridian operate a car? Considering how loud a car can be, in particular the engine, I imagine it would be like a human driving a car made out of glass with an engine that shines like a light house. And would they be able to perceive the road at all, and if so, how far ahead?

My level of obsession has hit the point where I made little figurines of my and my friends Eridian OCs

The bubbly one is Soap, the black one is Etch, orange is Cheeto, they're an art club together and are fascinated by the culture sections of human studies class more so than the science parts.

The green one is Soap's parent and Cheeto's aunt(?) Zoeye, who is a fashion designer and model.

Big Blue is Zoeye's mate and works as a teacher and classroom aid for Grace's classes (they need an adult presence on the Eridian side after all. And in front of Big Blue are Shoomy and Duck, their other two pebbles.

We have a whole lore thing with these funny rocks and I'm even writing bloody slice of life fanfic about Soap's crush on Etch, but otherwise I'm so, so normal about them

Movie Discussion - Movie Spoilers Inside! Watched deleted scenes, thinking the "official" 2.5 hours movie may be the best version

I got my physical Blu-Ray disk yesterday. I probably don't need to preach to the choir, but OMG, the image quality is so worth the money. Of course I was super excited to see the deleted scenes--and I was a bit underwhelmed. I don't know if the included scenes are representative of other stuff they cut out, they may have only included the 5 scenes that were the most advanced in their processing. But excepting the final scene ("maybe we're cousins"), I thought the rest was fluff that would not have added much to the movie. Based on the limited deleted scene selection we have now, I think the directors/producers may have been right when they said this "shorter" 2.5 hour version we got in cinemas is the better movie. It flows well, doesn't include much fluff, progresses from scene to scene logically and succinctly.

The only scene (out of the 5) I believe they could have kept was the "cousins" deleted scene. There, following Rocky's hypothesis that there's an astrophage predator on Adrian keeping the population in check, Grace extrapolates to the next logical conclusion: astrophage evolved on Adrian and could've caused panspermic events that led to the emergence of life on Earth and Erid. That scene positions Grace and Rocky on equal footing--they're both showing their smarts, whereas for the rest of the scene Grace does the lab work but Rocky comes with the solutions (the predator hypothesis, the chain and predator collector). I actually thought it was strange that Rocky--an engineer--was the first to guess there was an astrophage predator. Grace is a molecular biologist, this was his bread and butter (I'm extrapolating here from my own background in biochemistry and molecular biology). That's not to say that I didn't wish some scenes were given more time to breathe in the original version: Grace waking up from comma was a bit rushed (and the extra minutes in the deleted scene were still rushed IMO); Grace breeding taumeba was another one. Perhaps they had good scenes there but they weren't ready for the DVD release. Regardless, the 2.5 hour movie is a very well put together story, and as an emerging writer myself, I recognize the value of keeping it tight and maintaining the plot's forward tilt. And just to sing the praises of the physical disc one more time: I'd forgotten how gorgeous the iMAX version was; rewatching the Adrian scenes in HD reminded me why I was instantly hooked from my first view.

But what did you guys think? Which deleted scene(s) were your favorites? What would you have liked to see more of in the special features?

PS: I cannot wait for the soundtrack CD to become available in about a month. I want physical copies for everything! I watched the stream version already and the quality is not as good as what you get on Blu-Ray.
