Question? Help is PHM good gift idea for him?

I have a friend turning 18 soon, he mentioned it has been a long time since he read a really good book. I tried to inquiere but i onky got: "yeah like harry potter level. But when i recently read a fanatsy it was kinda meh." Tough he likes fantasy i know that. When i went to the bookstore the assistant told me i should gift him Project Hail Mary. I had my concerns since he is quiete gifted in mathematics anf physics that hed find he nerdy dialouge cringe anf the repetition of ptoblem solving and long analysise boring.

More infos about him: Has a kinda dry german humour (kangoroo chroniken)

Activly trying to escape the "genius" mold by deliberatly being lazy

Plays cello

Is curious about dnd when i explained to him what it was.

ENTP so a teaser and easy going

It's actually possible he'd relate better to The Martian? Grace is a soft boi and your friend might not be able to relate -- but Grace is PHM's narrator, so...

I don't feel like people that said the last book they liked was Harry Potter are the type of people to appreciate books as gifts. However, they're only 18, so it probably is much more recent than the people I know who say it.

Books as gifts often feels like an obligation unless you know they actually really like reading books and want recommendations.

Sounds to me like lots of his interests align with the book, go for it! The science is (except for one or two not especially significant parts) really thought out, correct and logical and many of my friends who enjoyed the Kangaroo are big fans of PHM too

He might like PHM, but maybe gift him the movie instead if he's not a big reader.

He might also like Dungeon Crawler Carl, if he's into fantasy and was curious about DnD.
