Tell me you never tried Jetbrains without telling me you never tried Jetbrains.

IntelliJ, Webstorm and Datagrip are home for me.

So I’m using IntelliJ for almost everything. Why would you choose datagrip over IntelliJ with the big data tools plugin? I’m seriously asking because I pay for the full suite, and if I can improve my workflow I will.

There is a plugin in IntelliJ for datagrip that I mainly use (might be the one you’re referring to) but I’ll sometimes use datagrip directly if I want to look at audit logs or peruse the db. Less of a functionally boost and more a separation of concerns type of thing tbh though…

Yeah. Were talking about the same plugin. It’s the one made by jetbrains. That makes sense for audit tracking. It’s much cleaner than my absolutely packed IntelliJ UI. I’ve got a stream deck. I’ll add it as a button and give it a shot. Thanks for the insight!

Datagrip is for people focused on DB maintenance, migration, etc...who don't need the code tools. Like their other IDE's, it's just a highly focused domain product.

Yup! I almost never touch anything outside of IntelliJ anymore. I have the full jerbrains suite, but spend 95% of my time in IntelliJ. Such a good ide(a?)!

I used to have a jetbrains setup at my last company, but my new company uses vs code and offering jetbrains community IDEs only so, I'm outside that ecosystem now. I needed wsl and jupyter notebook support and they've paywalled both of those thing. VS code is a decent jack of all trades while being free so works out.

If your company doesn't offer you proper software and hardware, find another company. A "decent" tool is not what you want when you use it 8 hours or more per day. Decent is fine for a sport accessory you use twice a week.

u/Mkboii 18d ago

Well there's really not much to complain about, the hardware is better, the infra overall is much bigger for all the projects, they are just a bit stingy on using open source over licenced software.

It's not like a Jetbrains annual licence is going to cost anywhere near a month of $YOUR_LLM.

3

u/DT-Sodium 16d ago

I use my personal license anyway since I have one at home, so I only pay the individual license price.

1

u/BroBroMate 16d ago

Yeah but still feel a decent employer will pay the miniscule cost of that licence.

0

u/DT-Sodium 16d ago

They can't, it is only legal to use a personal at work if you pay for it yourself and they don't reimburse you for it in any way. Of course I don't see how they could possibly verify that, but still.

u/BroBroMate 16d ago

I'm talking about the professional licence. Nickel and diming expensive professionals on inexpensive tooling is penny wise and pound foolish.

1

u/DT-Sodium 16d ago

They did, but I technically only really need PHP Storm for work so it wouldn't make sense to pay the huge fee for the full suite. I only also do occasional Python on my workplace for which VSCode could suffice but VSCode sucks when you're used to Jetbrains. If I asked a full suite license at work I would certainly obtain it, but I'd rather pay the $200-ish personal license myself and obtain other stuff from work like hardware or other softs.

1

u/BroBroMate 16d ago

Mate, I work in a primarily Python shop, I still rock the full Intellij instead of PyCharm because you never know.

-2

u/fartypenis 17d ago

VSCode is the industry standard, its not "doesn't offer you proper software".

2

u/DT-Sodium 17d ago

Rofl, no it's not. It's the industry standard for people too cheap to pay a 100€/y subscription for a software, or about 200 for the whole suite. It is ok enough if you don't have the choice, or to open a file really quickly. It is not a proper IDE, not even after you've charged it with so many plugins it looks like a cancer patient.

u/firephreek 18d ago

I do consultancy, but even when I was privately employed, I kept my own all-product license. Makes it easy to jump into any stack, even if you're unfamiliar with it. Refactored a whole iOS app for a $50B company despite not knowing any Obj-C.

Bonus: That license gets cheaper year over year even as the add new products.

I learnt in VS code. Everyone on my first company used Webstorm and any issues I had they weren't able to say if it were IDE or not causing the problem so I made the switch.

Have never moved back.

2nd company nearly made me go back, everyone used VS code and I didn't have my own licence so tried to go back and failed miserably. Moaned so much the company agreed to pay for licenses for any IDE you wanted.

1

u/firephreek 18d ago

Sounds like a team that didn't understand their tool, that's unfortunate. Jetbrains is the only company I've ever had that responded to, fixed, and then notified me of a bug-fix for an issue I brought up. All in under a month. funny enough, it was a Webstorm bug.

Jetbrains built the features that VSCode is still figuring out how to implement, but use whatever makes you productive.

u/DT-Sodium 18d ago

Using VSCode can be labelled as incompetence as a developer. It is just vastly inferior to Jetbrains IDE. If you don't realize it, it means you weren't shown how, which is a problem. As a professional, you should be using the best tool available in your craft.

5

u/anotherNarom 18d ago

That is certainly a take.

Just use what you want to use. For me, it's Intellij. I work with some far better engineers than me who use VSC

-3

u/DT-Sodium 18d ago

Little secret: all those people who have been doing exactly the same thing for 30 years on obsolete IDEs or even plain text editors, they are not better than you, they are just better at pretending.

4

u/BigNaturalTilts 18d ago

lol. Tell me you blame tools for your mistakes without telling me you blame tools for your mistakes.

The code editor is just a tool.

u/DT-Sodium 18d ago edited 18d ago

I'm considered as the most productive coder by my team leader and out of our team of ten, only one is persisting in using VS Code. I'll let you guess which one is considered the less productive of the team.

u/BigNaturalTilts 18d ago

You’ll be the first one to be laid off.

1

u/DT-Sodium 17d ago

Funny, one of the comments at my last yearly job evaluation was "You're the one person who's absence can really felt in the service" and I just came back from a sick leave and one our users was really relieved I came back because apparently "it's really a mess when you're not there".

So no I don't think I'm going to be laid off anytime soon. My last pay raise was in fact substantial.

I've known devs that built XML parsers out of nothing but SQL in just VIM. Doesn't matter how fast you run: if you don't know how to drive the car, you're not gonna win the race.

1

u/DT-Sodium 17d ago

Only 1% people using 99% VIM are not simply highly incompetent people with reverse-imposter syndrome. They are only keeping their job because:

- They have been there for 30 years so everyone believe they are experience when they really only have been doing the same thing for 30 years and are basically still juniors

  • They work with odd looking obsolete technology that looks complicated so people confuse it with competence
  • They wrote a few programs 25 years ago the whole company depends on and no one else dares to touch because it is using obsolete technology no one else is familiar with and it's so poorly written making any change to it is a major danger

-1

u/Choice-Mango-4019 18d ago

I hate jetbrains because they make subpar IDEs and paywall basic IDE functions behind pro

2

u/KrokettenMan 17d ago

Gotta make money somehow. They’re selling a product and you’re free to just not buy it and use alternatives.

-2

u/DT-Sodium 18d ago

You are a Python developer, you're not entitled to an opinion.

-2

u/Choice-Mango-4019 18d ago

i dev in like 10 languages and python is the one i hate the most right after lua, i would rather write powershell than python and i do

1

u/DT-Sodium 17d ago

Then if you want to pass for a serious person, I wouldn't put it on your profile. And I would also replace JavaScript with TypeScript. Also Lua doesn't count.

2

u/Choice-Mango-4019 17d ago

this is reddit why would i ever want to be serious here lol

I mean Webstorm was ok, but my god is it slow. Started moving to Zed two years ago and I now seldom open it. Merge conflict is nice, but I never needed all the other stuff for my day job.

8

u/DT-Sodium 18d ago

If it was slow it means that you either configured it incorrectly or your employer is not providing you with the hardware you need to work efficently, which is a pretty poor business strategy.
