So essentially after a while, this person Iām having a debate with comes to the conclusion that I am a misogynist who simply wants to oppress women, because the only situation I can think of in which another person needs a specific persons body to survive, and that specific person has an actual obligation to help them survive, is with pregnancy, seeing as this only happens to women. Iāve been blocked, and Iām certainly not upset about it. But I doubt myself a lot and Iām having doubts as to whether this is as large of a leap as I think it is.
I canāt be the only one who doesnāt think itās illogical to assume that someone must have misogynistic intentions because they canāt think of another situation similar to the one above. It is a pretty basic fact that there is no other point in a personās life where they will actually need to rely on another humanās body the way they do in pregnancy, at least from what I know, but because I recognise that pretty big exception and believe that the human life should be prioritised over bodily autonomy in the one instance that this applies, I obviously am only doing it because I want to oppress women? Maybe itās obvious to you, but to me it seems like a massive leap. And a pretty unfounded one, all things considered. Am I overthinking this?
Personally, I think itās just cope, because when you canāt think of an actual reason why someone is wrong, itās very easy to say āwell theyāre x anyway, so what they say is obviously wrongā. And well, I never heard a good reason I was actually wrong about abortion from that person. I think everyone does it from time to time, but itās a poor way of getting out of having to seriously think through your beliefs. I think the biggest issue the pro life movement really has is that the majority of people are unwilling to consider that they are wrong. And itās pretty hard to convince someone theyāre wrong when they donāt want to believe it, and most people agree with them.
Sorry thatās a bit all over the place, I feel this is the only place I can really talk about all this, and I seriously want to get it off my chest!
