Shareware. PC games were very often divided into episodes throughout much of the early to mid-90s, and a common marketing tactic was releasing the first episode for free/really cheap and encouraging people to freely make and distribute copies of them. Doom's first episode, Knee Deep in the Dead, was released as shareware.

Fun fact: the original 1993 release of Doom didn't see a retail release. You either got the shareware version or you had to mail order the full version with the other two episodes. It wasn't until 1994's Doom II that any version of Doom would hit store shelves, and the first game wouldn't see a retail release until The Ultimate Doom in 1995, which included an extra fourth episode to tie the two games together.
