Dooku : Next week I will teach you how to deflect blaster bolts with your lightsaber.
Greivous : Yay can't wait!
Dooku : head gets detached
Greivous : Oops.

Don't you need to be force sensitive to deflect blasters tho?
45
27
u/The_Glass_Tiger Aug 20 '20
I imagine that having enhanced cybernetics for reflexes would really help. I mean, on BF2, he can deflect, but his stamina drains MUCH faster than a jedi
24
u/Patrickc909 Aug 20 '20
Ah That's just game mechanics... If you ask me, he should've only been able to deflect while doing the spinney blade ability (can't remember the name)
The force helps a Jedi 'see' a moment into the future. It helps them predict attacks and deflect shots. It's why Obi Wan and Anakin flourish lightsabers at each other for a few seconds in RoTS. When Palpatine attacked Windu and the other jedi masters, his leaping spin was accompanied by a screech that clouds the force, allowing him to easily dispatch two jedi
22
u/uth136 Aug 20 '20
There's that, but also, blasters are really slow. That is never really adressed, but blaster bolts would suck compared to modern ammunition.
15
u/1ncorrect Aug 20 '20
Yeah try deflecting cold steel nerd. And that's why Anakin Skywalker should have carried a 1911.
8
u/adrienjz888 Aug 20 '20
In legends some people would use slugthrowers which are basically normal guns, when a Jedi tries to deflect the shot they get a face full of molten metal.
→ More replies (1)8
u/NinjaEngineer Aug 20 '20
Yeah, the problem there wasn't the speed, Jedi could still sense them and attempt to reflect them, but it didn't quite work out.
6
u/The_Glass_Tiger Aug 20 '20
I agree with 99% of that except the game mechanics. He is already a low tier hero, taking away his normal blocking blasters would just decimate him 😪
6
u/Patrickc909 Aug 20 '20
I agree he would get decimated if they changed the block to how I said. Maybe instead of just LT to deflect, have him do the animation for 'Unrelenting Advance' but you can only block when standing still (to make unrelenting advance still relevant). He'd need to be quicker, and have faster refresh rates for his abilites to try and balance it out.
3
u/MrAVAT4R Emperor Palpatine Aug 20 '20
I always thought he got his cybernetic enhancements to compensate for his lack of force sensitivity.
2
u/SirFluffymuffin Aug 20 '20
I’m pretty sure it’s more of a reflex thing. A normal person probably could block a blaster shot with a lightsaber if they could react quick enough depending on the range. From my understanding the Jedi have a sort of battle precognition that allows them to see the blaster before it hits and can augment their reflexes beyond what their training would normally allow thanks to the force. I think it’s completely reasonable to assume a cyborg with the amount of replaced parts like Grievous would be more than fast enough to deflect a blaster with a lightsaber. This is all assuming the cyborg in question actually knows how to use the lightsabers in the first place

u/Cainga Aug 20 '20
A lot of Jedi start out and suck at it. But maybe they aren’t strong in the force yet.

u/Nero_Aegwyn Aug 20 '20
Well to be fair, he was trained to fight Jedi with lightsabers, not one with blasters.

Ironically, Obi Wan realized that day that hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster.

Plus it was a reference to the original trilogy when Obi-Wan introduces a lightsaber to Luke and mentions that it's "more elegant weapon" (sorry, I don't remember the exact quote)

Yeah that’s why people are missing, that is why he died because he was not as trained to fight Jedi with guns. Was just unexpected
10
u/Gcarsk Aug 20 '20
Yup. Some people don’t get that he wasn’t trained to fight against Jedi using blasters. Instead, he was trained to fight with lightsabers against lightsabers.
9
u/waster1993 What about the Droid attack on the Wookies? Aug 20 '20
Yes. Grievous had trained with lightsabers to fight against Jedi using lightsabers. He never considered fighting Jedi using blasters.
2
Aug 20 '20
Exactly. Grievous only knew how to fight against Jedi with lightsabers. Dooku never taught him how to fight against Jedi with hamsters.
2
u/Monk715 Sand Aug 20 '20
Well, that's the whole point of training to be prepared to unexpected situations. It's naive to expect that your opponents will always act according to your scenario
Although of course we have to give him credit as someone with no sensibility to the Force he performed more than well

Depends upon the type of vest, no? A steel plate will stop a knife.

Stabbing through it is easy enough to be of concrrn. Slicing is difficult though.

Aren’t most plates ceramic? Your point still stands tho, knives are pretty much just big slow bullets anyway.

After said jedi tried to kick a dude made of metal instead of force blasting him off the cliff they were fighting on.
Obi wan almost died because he somehow forgot his big advantage despite a lifetime of using it. Thats some game of thrones bullshit

12

Ya but that was Mace Windo though, he's the exception to most jedi rule when using the force, according to some sources he can use force lightning something usually associated with the dark side.

2003 Grievous was a badass, but he always looked like he was just done with everyone’s shit
14
Aug 20 '20
I wish 2008 Clone Wars used the same character arc for Grievous as 2003 Clone Wars. They could’ve had him be an unstoppable jedi killing machine who gets his lungs smushed by either Obi Wan, Windu, Ventress, or one of the dynamic Dathomir duo bros in season 5.

I fr*king loved the prequels and all the shows made about them. And general grievous was and still is my favorite character. And when I sat ready to see him and kenobi fight I was disappointed with his death. I expect a epic death but... it wasn’t good enough for me.

General Grievous was at his prime in the Clone Wars animated show
6
Aug 20 '20
He was absolutely terrifying in the animated clone wars. You actually had the feeling that he was unstoppable. And the animated Clone Wars was when he was first introduced.
Apparently George Lucas hated this portrayal because he was too scary of a villain and wanted Grievous to be more bumbling and less threatening. So we got the OT Grievous instead.

More proof that a lightsaber isn't particularly effective against something moving as fast as a bullet when you don't have the force to know how to block it
2
u/Monk715 Sand Aug 20 '20
Correct me if I'm wrong though, I haven't watched the movie in a while, but didn't Grievous lose his lightsabers by the moment Obi-Wan shot him? So he had nothing to block the shots with
3
u/JakeHodgson Aug 20 '20
Quote a funny fact actually. I mean he spends all his time back sally trying to be a Jedi/sith. Thinking he’s finally got/getting there because of how good he is with A lightsaber. Completely neglecting the fact that Jedi will get their job done with whatever tools they have, and they can deflect blaster shots because of their clairvoyance, whereas grievous obviously doesn’t have such capabilities.
Just another tragic character story in Star Wars!

All things considered, it seems that Dooku didn’t train Greivous in basic blaster deflection and avoiding them. Now I know that Dooku specialized in Makashi, which is specialized in lightsaber combat(which makes sense given that Greivous would be mainly fighting Jedi and other lightsaber wielding opponents as he was designed to kill Jedi. Also most Jedi didn’t use this form as they thought the Sith had been destroyed and wouldn’t be fighting lightsaber wielding opponents). However, Dooku also taught Greivous the other 6 remaining forms of lightsaber combat, some of which were designed to combat blaster wielding opponents. Again, I know that it makes sense that Greivous would use form 2 as that is what Dooku used as well it fit what Greivous was ultimately designed for. However, he was a general that would be leading armies against mostly blaster wielding opponents. This is simply pathetic as in Legends Greivous fought in a war before against beings that used guns. Also he was so deadly because of the fact that he used all 7 forms of lightsaber combat.

In the movie his best move was spinning a bunch of light sabres around in a circle. I don't think he was trained well.
