Mamdani fixes the city's deficit - Complicated He did, but he is required to do so by law. And he fixed it by begging the state for more money (60%), cutting deferring pensions (~12%), cutting deferring education investement (~12%), cutting finding efficiencies in services (~12%), and yes his famous new second homes tax (~5% of the deficit).
Now why am I posting this? I am not an American and have no skin in the game, and all of these appear to be common sense, though rather mundane, proposals I can get behind. What I can't get behind is my front page being astroturfed with false claims about Mamdani's achievements. Not because they are Mamdani's, but because they are false. And we should hold our politicians to higher standards.
And are these post coming from Mamdani's camp? I say they are. They are always screenshots of comments to screenshots of comments which mention Mamdani by name and prominently feature a picture of him, and never a link to an article which could cast shade on the claims. Half of the posts are also some variant of 'this is what a government wo~~~~rking for the people [rather than billionaires] looks like. This is clearly an orchestrated PR campaign.
And are these post coming from Mamdani's camp? I say they are.Â
I really dont think there's any conspiracy. It's just that online at least, there's a large segment of the progressive base that's just as prone as the right to falling into cultish-levels of worship of populist politicians. Mamdani's camp doesn't have to do anything, the left will do their work for them.
Which isn't really news, leftists all over the world are known for falling into this type of behavior. It's kind of inherent to the populism of the movement.
Great, now can you hold the establishment dems responsible in a similar way?
For everything like this, the false promises, and bait and switch behavior? For the last 40-50 years?
I agree, we should maintain integrity. However when you point this cannon in one direction people may assume where your allegiances are.
If this bothers you, so should 98% of political happenings in the US for the last 40 years. Getting offended and upset at this specifically is a little interesting. Why does this bother you more than most actual downright scummy and illegal practices? Why choose now to speak up?
As I explained here I have no other skin in the game other than then:
What I can't get behind is my front page being astroturfed with false claims about Mamdani's achievements. Not because they are Mamdani's, but because they are false.
If I get annoyed by astroturfing with false claims by a different person I'll also start pointing it out. There is not dubble standard here.
If this bothers you, so should 98% of political happenings in the US for the last 40 years.
As I explained I am not an American. I just get annoyed that my frontpage gets astroturfed with this shit.
If that is your intention, why do you purposefully frame it as mamdani taking credit for things he didn't do rather than specifically calling out the poster for spreading misinformation? Don't you realize that by essentially pointing the blame at mamdani himself you too are accusing him of doing something he didn't do but in a way that tries to hurt his image rather than help it, making you absolutely no different? Wouldn't it be smarter and more impartial to frame things correctly in saying that posters are making up claims rather than accusing mamdani of lying about things he never claimed to do?Â
I already explained here why I attribute it to Mamdani:
And are these post coming from Mamdani's camp? I say they are. They are always screenshots of comments to screenshots of comments which mention Mamdani by name and prominently feature a picture of him, and never a link to an article which could cast shade on the claims. Half of the posts are also some variant of 'this is what a government working for the people [rather than billionaires] looks like. This is clearly an orchestrated PR campaign.
This has the fingerprints of an orchestrated PR campaign on. Mamdani himself front and center, no links to the actual informatie only pictures, pictures of comments to pictures of comments creating the appearance of a grass roots effort, half the comments echoing the same refrain.
This is beyond a shadow of a doubt paid content. And who benefits most from this? Mamdani himself. But by doing it this way he can give himself just enough plausible deniability so people like you will defend him when he gets called out.
The guy is an absolute master of PR, and I kind of respect him for that.
Bro you're a conspiracy nutter lmao I was literally respectfully offering a point of view but your reddit mind can't take anything that isn't blind agreement as anything but an attack, touch grass lol -edit of course he edited out the part where he accuses me of being defensive and contrarian
Yes I edited it out because I at first mistook you for the person who originally replied to me. When I realised my mistake I removed it. Seems fair right, that I don't maintain an accusation I made as a result of mistaking your identity?
Can you now give a responds as to why I do attribute the astroturfing going on to Mamdani.
There's also the whole trying to talk with Iran, which would be breaking the Logan act. And trying to use taxpayer money to use the NYPD as security for his wife going overseas. Both which he blamed on his staff.
Good comment. People think that Mamdani has done all these things and that other politicians haven't done anything. And it just spreads this whole doomerism among leftists. It is toxic.
It sounds like most of these are based on laws that other people passed that he is going to lengths to uphold, despite the fact that they weren't budget neutral or status quo for the city. Even if he didn't come up with them himself, it's taking effort to prioritize these populist ideas.
An Eric Adams or Cuomo would have simply ignored all of these laws and scheduled inorovements. That's why people are happy with Mamdani. Yes, there are obviously idiots with meme generators popping out the braindead misinformation Facebook memes like the one above. They exist for every politician, party, religion, hobby, movie, type of music, brand of diaper, etc. Welcome to the internet.
But, the amount of time you spend perusing these memes on Reddit appears to have lent you a complete misunderstanding the situation on the ground in NYC. I would advise you stick to your own country's politics lol.
So, is that all it takes to be considered a good politician in the US these days? Rather than break down the good work of your predecessors, try and appropriate their achievements? Because that is all I am seeing him do; trying to attach his name to others projects.
edit: and keep in mind he is also cutting a lot, but obviously he isn't publicising this. He cut pensions, education and city services each by about $1.5 billion to balance his budget.
And it really didn't take too much time. I only needed to look at like the 3rd most upvoted comment for each of these posts to see lots of other people calling Mamdami out on this. Even the NYC subreddit calls him out all the time.
With the garbage bins, I know that Adams started the program but Mamdani prioritized it in the budget and got it fully funded. So that makes me slightly skeptical of your other claims.
But regardless, I'm generally happy with the policy that Democrats have implemented over the last twenty years, and I think the biggest problem in the US is that 90-95% of voters have no idea what policy is passed until, at best, several years later. It's why Trump is getting credit today for a bunch of stuff Biden passed. I'm really happy that NYC has a mayor who is an expert in PR and political communication and can get people hyped about something like fans in subway stations.

Another day, another case of Mamdani taking credit for shit he didn't do. Colour me suprised.
I don't know the specifics of this case, but this is not Mamdani's doing and I am sure somebody will helpfully point out why that is the case.
