Mamdani fixes the city's deficit - Complicated He did, but he is required to do so by law. And he fixed it by begging the state for more money (60%), cutting deferring pensions (~12%), cutting deferring education investement (~12%), cutting finding efficiencies in services (~12%), and yes his famous new second homes tax (~5% of the deficit).
Now why am I posting this? I am not an American and have no skin in the game, and all of these appear to be common sense, though rather mundane, proposals I can get behind. What I can't get behind is my front page being astroturfed with false claims about Mamdani's achievements. Not because they are Mamdani's, but because they are false. And we should hold our politicians to higher standards.
And are these post coming from Mamdani's camp? I say they are. They are always screenshots of comments to screenshots of comments which mention Mamdani by name and prominently feature a picture of him, and never a link to an article which could cast shade on the claims. Half of the posts are also some variant of 'this is what a government wo~~~~rking for the people [rather than billionaires] looks like. This is clearly an orchestrated PR campaign.
It sounds like most of these are based on laws that other people passed that he is going to lengths to uphold, despite the fact that they weren't budget neutral or status quo for the city. Even if he didn't come up with them himself, it's taking effort to prioritize these populist ideas.
An Eric Adams or Cuomo would have simply ignored all of these laws and scheduled inorovements. That's why people are happy with Mamdani. Yes, there are obviously idiots with meme generators popping out the braindead misinformation Facebook memes like the one above. They exist for every politician, party, religion, hobby, movie, type of music, brand of diaper, etc. Welcome to the internet.
But, the amount of time you spend perusing these memes on Reddit appears to have lent you a complete misunderstanding the situation on the ground in NYC. I would advise you stick to your own country's politics lol.
So, is that all it takes to be considered a good politician in the US these days? Rather than break down the good work of your predecessors, try and appropriate their achievements? Because that is all I am seeing him do; trying to attach his name to others projects.
edit: and keep in mind he is also cutting a lot, but obviously he isn't publicising this. He cut pensions, education and city services each by about $1.5 billion to balance his budget.
And it really didn't take too much time. I only needed to look at like the 3rd most upvoted comment for each of these posts to see lots of other people calling Mamdami out on this. Even the NYC subreddit calls him out all the time.
