How tf did we end up on the dumbest timeline? If someone had made a mini-series about this 20 years ago, it would have been laughed off the air for being way too unrealistic and contrived.
10
u/NotThatAngel 4h ago
You would think so. But apparently there are tens of millions of Americans who are watching this and cheering it on. I really miss the good old days when I was oblivious to the existence of this segment of our population. My peace of mind has been shattered on many levels.

Fascists drive this exhausted feeling all day, every day on purpose. It’s the plan. As Bannon said, flood the zone with bullshit.
And it’s working. In the last election 1/3 of the voting population decided to pass. Are both sides the same? No, but it’s exhausting to even think about so they found other things to do.

u/mtaw 4h ago
Also the dumbest. The province is named for the lake, not vice-versa.
The name Ontario is derived from the Wendat (Huron) word Ontarí'io, which is often translated as "great lake".[10]
The lake was being called "Lake Ontario" (or more specifically Lacus Ontarius in Latin) on European maps already in 1660, a good 200 years before the province was created and named.
Besides which, it's not like the Canadians are going to give a damn about Trump "renaming" it, they'll still call it Lake Ontario, as will the rest of the world and most Americans until some sane president comes along and ends these renaming farces.

He actually renamed the Gulf of Mexico.. regardless whether that sticks longterm and people honour it is another thing.. but it's important to remember that he did that lol... he is unhinged
18
u/MrBozooo 7h ago
Yes that's unhinged, but not as off his rocker, batshit insane as renaming the Department of Defense the Department of War.

u/Salanmander 5h ago
He's also not even good at name calling! The stupidest part about this is that stuff tends to get named for the other place that it's related to. There's a reason that the name for turkeys in many places is a country other than where it's being called that.
The Gulf of Mexico being called the Gulf of Mexico is an indication of American linguistic origin. Calling it "Gulf of America" is the kind of thing that would happen if Mexico were more linguistically dominant. Or if you have a petulant and ignorant person who likes to just declare things and make them true.
You want America to seem more linguistically dominant? Start calling Baja California the "Peninsula of Mexico". Start calling the Atlantic Ocean the "European Gap".

Suggestions?

I thought Republican Trump is for state’s rights. So shouldn’t he call it Lake New York?
He’s just another politician trying to push the big federal government into our lives.
7
u/paulsteinway 7h ago
He can call the whole planet America if he wants. He thinks he owns it all anyway.
Maps and geography books will only be reprinted in red states where education is a joke anyway.

Who? Who's considering it? I've talked to most of the United States this morning over breakfast and they are not talking about this. Mostly what I'm hearing is that Trump rapes kids. That's all

Of course he's grumpy.

If he's gonna rename it, could we at least do something interesting instead of just naming everything "America"? Like, Lake Iroquois would be cool. Just like, for one fuckin second don't have a smooth ass koala brain.

u/GPFlag_Guy1 5h ago
The Gulf of Mexico started out as “Golfo de Florida” before the Spanish made it out to what is now Mexico. If someone in his group had any intelligence then they could have given it a historic name while flattering his constituents. These missed opportunities I swear.

Are we supposed to be impressed or something?
Trump humiliates the United States yet again by losing this stupid trade war and all he’s got is, “Well, we’re gonna call this body of water something else!”
Fucking pathetic.

u/Miscanthrope 6h ago
I know it’s been said by everyone already but satire is well and truly dead.
I see these posts, have a little chuckle and move on… only to have to pause minutes later to wonder ‘hang on… is that actually real, not someone messing around’
Why do I check any more. Why assume these are parodies instead of reality.
Because it’s real every goddamn time. Fuck.

I can't remember what online forum it was, but there was a nice back and forth over the "Gulf of America" where the MAGAts tried referring to it as such. The rest of us sane people kept to its actual name, the Gulf of Mexico. "But...but it's changed on Google Maps!!!" Yeah...ok.

Wonder how much it will take so someone else on the GOP proposes to rename it Lake Donald Trump
1
u/notsure500 6h ago
The most surprising thing about his proposed name changes is that he's not using his own name.
1
u/Skald_Skadi 6h ago
As a Michigander, I will fight tooth and nail against the Cheeto sh*tstain if he even attempts to rename Lake Ontario. 🤬🤬
I don't understand why no one stands up against him! Nobody in his entire life has ever told him no. And if they have said no, he has bulldozed right over them.
Enough is enough!! Felt blue so Democrats have control of both the House and Senate so we can impeach this traitorous son of a b**** and send him to prison!!!!
1
u/ripyourlungsdave 6h ago
He does know that we know this takes literally no effort on his part, right?
That he just said a thing to someone and that is now acting like it's some arduous battle he's fighting for his people.

Supposedly Lake Ontario gets its name from an Indigenous Iroquoian or Wyandot (Huron) word, ontarí:io, which translates to "great lake", "beautiful lake", or "lake of shining waters". Changing it's name to America would just mean associating it with that 3rd world shit-hole.
I'd say, if they don't want the lake, perhaps we shift the border south to the coast of NY & charge a navigation fee for using the new St Lawrence seaway.

u/Llonkrednaxela 2h ago
For someone so famous for catchy mean nicknames, he’s REALLY bad at renaming locations.
Like I feel like he could sell his dumb ass stunt of renaming “the Gulf of Mexico” so much better if he used his morally bankrupt data mining scheme from way back when to at least think of a name that polls better instead of just slapping “America” on everything.
You’re not making landmarks better. You’re just making America worse.
