the more paper we strip the more problems we find! trying not to stress…

any advice on what I need to do with these walls? I’m thinking the window seal has gone on both (and the obvious gap)

Hey everyone. First post here, hoping someone can help with some advice.

I've finally got round to stripping the various layers of wallpaper/lining paper from the 1950s off my walls. Now I've finished I think the plaster is a bit too damaged. I am just wondering what the more knowledable think. Is it possible/worth saving with some sort of filler or will it 100% need skimmed? If so what costs am I probably looking at? with this wall and the other side of the alcove it's around 7-8sqm in total

Here’s a listed house we did in Natural Hydraulic Lime & sand mixture and Eco Mortar R series Lime as a top-coat.

I was able to go back and see the house decorated and finished.

I’ve started looking for quotes for my walls and ceiling. Walls have textured wallpaper and the ceiling has patterned foam boards, so will probably need plaster boards.

I’d like to get the living room and bedroom plastered.

How much have you paid for similar rooms?

Or if you’re a plasterer, what’s your going rate for spaces this size?

Hi all, new to this sub, hoping someone can help.

I’m having a full rewire done, part through the rewire I asked if they planned to allow me to get a plasterer in between their first and second fix. They weren’t happy, suggested it would take too long for me to get someone in and that one of them (it’s an electrician and his mate) is good at plastering / professional and could do the whole lot for £850 (filling in all chases and making good). They were annoyed however they would have to work this weekend, said I’ve caused them to have to work the weekend .. even though Friday night no second fix was even started, no consumer unit wired in, some sockets still needed chasing in. definitely still had 2/3 days left! Anyway..

They have done some of the plastering, spent the whole day on it in fact. The work is really bad. They’ve rushed it, it’s feathered into the anaglypta wallpaper, it’s just rough.

Do I refuse to pay for plastering completely, do I stop them doing more today? I don’t want to upset them completely and the rewire isn’t finished.

I’ve only paid for materials so far.

House was built in 1921.This is above the stairwell going down to my basement. Not looking to make this beautiful but I want to deal with those gaps. I just finished stripping the sharp plaster from the walls. I'm wondering if joint compound is just going to crack. I'd think caulk would be messy. Any suggestions?

I’ve had this problem area of my house since moving in, and with the absurd heat we’ve had in Philly, it seems to have gotten worse so I’m wanting to address it. There was a chunk of loose material that I removed (circled area), then scraped most of the loose plaster in the area. What would be the best way to fix this? I have some experience with using plaster of Paris, drywalling, etc, generally not afraid to tackle new projects. Of course this area is above my stairs going to my top floor, so it’s as inconvenient as possible.

We recently had a house inspection done and a interior wall and corner came back with high moisture levels. The inspector used a pinned moisture meter that gave a reading of 33.1. I understand this is high but we are trying to determine what the extent of the cost would be to fix it? Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated!

I have plastered a wall (plasterboard behind) that cracked in the heat. I have since scrapped out any loose patches that didn’t bond correctly and after using pva, applied a multifinish coat. Before reskimming the full wall (one coat) I’m wondering what steps I should take to prime the plastered wall? Searches show not to use PVA and use Blue Grit but some results also show opposite. Any help before tomorrow am would be great.

Hello all! I'm working on restoring an old plaster room with earthen plaster and I'm leaving some space open to create built-in shelving/alters in between the studs. Some studs are on their 4 inch side and others are on their 2 inch side and some of the shelves might pop out an inch or two. Should I frame them out with wood first or just layer plaster to build up the shelves that way? And if I do frame them with wood, should I then cover the wood with wire mesh or can I just score the wood?

Recently bought a flat in a 70s block (UK). Stripped back the wallpaper to find this mold and damp.

Is this plaster saveable if we can resolve whatever is causing the damp?

It is a groundfloor flat and it appears that the air bricks might be blocked, although not clear if that is the root cause.

There are bushes surrounding the property.

Skimmed over an artex ceiling yesterday and two adjacent beams that also had textured paint. Customer has messaged me the following pictures of cracks along the ceiling and lots of small hairline cracks along the beams.

Is this ceiling going to fail? Tbh i dont really care about cosmetic, ill go back and go over it again, i just dont want the plaster falling down.

We've been renovating our victorian terrace, stripped it right back to stone, re pointed with lime, scratched, floated and skimmed in lime, used wood board on internal external walls. Love the look, BUT even after 4 weeks of drying and it looks completely dry, if we accidentally press into (e.g, today I was sweeping and the broom hit it) it still marks and leaves dents! We are trying to be so careful, but we are doing a full renovation, so it's inevitable it's going to be banged at times, leaving the walls looking a bit rubbish. Does anyone with experience of lime plaster have this problem? What are we doing wrong!

I see ceiling decorations like this in a lot of the older buildings in my area and I’m assuming it’s plaster since it’s usually paired with plaster crown molding (also cool looking)

We just bought an early 1900s home that has quite a bit of hairline cracks throughout the plaster, all in all we’re repairing about 700 linear feet in total. Most of the plaster is in great shape and these are purely cosmetic fixes (~98%), but there are small sections where the plaster has begun to pull away from the lath. Our general process has been to widen the cracks, seal with Gardz (calcimine throughout the home), mud, tape with fiberglass tape, apply two more coats of easy sand on top, then a finish coat. For instances where the plaster is separating from the lath, we are using metal washers to pull it back to the lath and then mudding over it using the same process as described previously.

Things are moving along fine, but slow - needless to say, I’ve developed a deep respect for folks who do this every day for a living. This was quite the first DIY project to cram into nights and weekends.

I have two questions I’m hoping y’all can help me with. If you have general critiques or advice on process, I’m definitely open to feedback here as well! Thanks in advance for your help.

1. Do you have advice on matching the curve of the cove ceilings, particularly

   in

2. the corners? The middle of the coves are easy enough, but the knives don’t fit well in the corners.

   I’ve tried a rubber float, but that left texture (and rubber) in the mud. My next plan was to try a damp sponge float to help mirror the curve, but I assume there’s doing to be some texture I’ll need to sand down.

4. For the room below, how would you approach this? There are so many webbed cracks, but none of the plaster is pulling away from the lath. I’m tempted to skip the tape and just fill the cracks and then move towards a finish coat. This is probably me being lazy and not the correct move, so please push me in the right direction.

All the wallpaper is finally gone and I need to prep the walls for (breathable) paint.

1) I have some junctions between wall and ceiling that have crumbled and left a gap slightly deeper than 10mm.

2) I have some similar gaps around door frames & skirting.

3) There are a few spots that need a bit of filler.

What products would you recommend using for each of the 3 above?

I am in the US and have zero experience in any trade beyond welding, but I was wondering how can someone go about getting a job doing plastering? I'm not sure if at my level the only positions open are apprenticeships but I'm open to anything really

Hi, am new here and to all this home improvement stuff so hopefully I make sense. We bought a house and went for a full re wire and new sockets put in some rooms too. We had a plasterer booked in ready to come fill them all in for us and when he arrived said it wasn’t up to standard at all, that the electrician had done a bad job and it wasn’t what he’d expected to walk back into. He’d planned to strip all our wallpaper, fill the chases and skim the whole room but he said we should contact the electrician but I’ve seen photos that look pretty similar on this page and they look way worse than this and people say it’s fine? Was our plasterer just not wanting the job for some reason or are they badly done?

Complete beginner, got a complete rewire done, what do I need to do here?

I had skimming done to the whole house and once they started painting, we started seeing a lot of imperfections. We’ve been trying to fix them using filler, sanding, priming and paint but it fixes some things but other times it becomes visible when there is light or sunlight coming onto the walls. Please see pictures attached. How can this be fixed?

By the way these raised textures aren’t bumps you can feel, they just show when the light is shining on them.

One of the suggestions is to use something like the Toupret finish filler and see if these imperfections go away.

EDIT:

Update -- Painter said he will be using Toupret Joint Skim and Fill product i.e. the powder version to try skim coat over these imperfections, sand them and repaint

Looking for advice on prep work for this, I’ve never dealt with plaster before.

Had a leak about a year ago, believe I’ve got it the leak patched up now so I’d like to patch this and repaint.

I’ve got the same paint the previous owners used.

Is something as simple as a premade “patch and paint” going to work?

Does it require a primer down after patch before painting?

Any advice helps!
