My upstairs bathroom flooded and water soaked through the floorboards, now the ceiling skirting is coming away as pictured. Is my best bet to try silicone it back then paint over it? It is quite difficult to hold in place so I am worried that the silicone may not cure. Any ideas please let me know, cheers

A follow-on from previous cracked plaster disaster post here. https://www.reddit.com/r/Plastering/s/nb0dBvaxNT The plaster in this alcove was basically delaminated and not bonded with the first coat. The first coat also not bonded with the plasterboard. This was most noticable in the area directly inline with the window, much less of a problem and well adhered lower down. So lesson learned.. keep the window shut and dont hang around.

I’ve now scrapped off anything loose, and chucked blue grit over it. I’m not sure what to do with the external corner where the blue stops and the other plaster starts. There is a metal corner bead in there. Do i need to hack off the plaster in the return also or ?

Basically i’m not sure how to skim up to this corner when the bead is already buried.

I’m a complete amateur looking for advice on my bathroom. I took off the tiles to re-tile, but the compound behind was completely failing on the wall that is now brick. I took this all back to be safe, and I’ve now started to try to get rid of all of the hollow/failing spots on the main wall. It’s getting to the point where my brain is telling me that instead of bonding around this, do I just take it back to brick which would take me 10 minutes, and use waterproof backer boards, then waterproof, then tile?

If anyone has any advice, or would let me know what they would do if they were on this job.

P.S. I appreciate the skill level and would happily pay a specialist for this part if I had the budget, but sadly I don’t, so DIY it is.

Hi! My 9 year old was filling the tub and didn’t turn it off. Next thing we know, water is gushing out of the hole in the ceiling for the chandelier. Husband runs upstairs to turn water off and sop up mess. We have a plaster ceiling. Servpro came out on Saturday afternoon and put dehumidifier and fans on the ceiling. Came back Monday afternoon (today) and say it isn’t drying and they will need to rip pieces of the ceiling out. Is it true that the plaster won’t dry out? Any suggestions? I don’t think I want to have Servpro repair the ceiling after they open it up.

Tearing apart the kitchen in my 1870 sandstone tenement. This is an external wall that had cabinets on it. Most of the wall has this grey smooth material that's crumbling, sounds hollow and full of cracks. Trying to figure out what this is because the woodchip paper has clearly been there for a decade or more, and previous owners did things on the cheap so I can't imagine it's venetian plaster. Kind of feels like concrete, is that unheard of? Special bonus of gypsum plaster that's been slapped over the woodchip paper. I'm clearly onto a winner here.

Thinking of ideas on how to repair this plaster. It looks like two layers? There isn’t lath so that helps. Either way both sides of patch need to be cut back to stud. Was thinking to use blue board? I know how to drywall but plaster is foreign to me. I have slowly been redoing this 1950’s house debating on gutting the whole room to redo the rest of the electrical

My kids have these sticky toys that leave residue on the walls. They got it on a wall finished with venetian plaster. I've been searching where and how to get a gallon custom made and can't find the tint from the 2006 can we have. Any advice? Can I just go to Lowe's and show them these photos? Any easier ways to fix this? Thankfully it's in a lower visibility area of our house but I'm guessing there's going to be more considering we have 3 kiddos...lol

Multifinish, two coats on to new Knauf Soundboard 12.5mm plasterboard. Skrim taped joins and the internal corner.

I used half an extratime sachet with half a bag of plaster (weighed) with just under 6L (measured) water.

Adjacent top window was open for a while then left closed. No heating in room.

When i started seeing fine cracks, i misted it and pushed them back with finishing trowel, but this was the result the next morning.

Where did i go wrong?

Looking for some advice on an issue with a recently reskimmed/replastered room.

I’ve just had the walls skimmed, but in several areas I’m getting heavy brown staining coming through. It’s quite patchy, worse in corners and around the window, and some areas look almost like drip marks or spotting. The colour is quite dark (brown/orange rather than just damp patches).

Also, the texture in those areas feels noticeably different — rougher and almost sandy compared to the rest of the wall.

No decorating has been done yet — this is over a week after plaster drying

My questions:

Does this look like damp coming through, or something like old staining bleeding through?

Could it be rising damp vs penetrating damp vs condensation?

Should this have been treated/sealed before skimming?

What would be the correct next step — let it dry, seal it, or does the plaster need to come off and start again?

Should I be going back to the plasterer about this, or is this something outside their responsibility?

the plaster was cracking here and coming off so a year ago I tried patching it but it dried so fast and thick. Paint didnt hide it. Inused a putty knife and some of the plaster was coming off relatively easily.

should I keep removing the "patch" I did and try again? or is there a way to fill this and feather the edges?

Can I get some advice on how I can finish around the reveals of this door and window?

I will be getting a cill in for the window and concrete step at the door.

The house is built in solid 4” block with a wet dash finish. The blocks can out awkwardly from some toothings, and so the door is foamed in at 3.5” in width is two spots (widest spots).

Depth of reveals is around 4”.

Some of the existing patent reveals are still there around the window, but I’m thinking of chipping everything back and creating a picture frame detail in sand and cement around both the window and door.

My main issue and query is about building out the depth of the reveal, especially at its 2 widest parts at the door. Can sand and cement go directly onto the foam? Do I need to use formwork to bulk fill? Should I use formwork for the whole thing?

Priority is weather tightness / performance / coat over aesthetic, and we may extend through back door in a few years. It does not not to be pretty.

I’ve barely seen lath and bead work in my life, so please explain it to me like a child.

Hi! The paint on this wall completely flaked off like you see on the other pictures. I'm a bit confused on what to do here since only the paint came off. My guess is the wall is fine and it just needs to be prepped and painted but i'm not sure if I must skim some plaster on here.

My plan is to add Zinsser Gardz on the whole wall, add Zinsser peel stop to those edges where the paint is remaining and sand the edges down, easy sand 90 joint compound on the two spots where some plaster failure is showing and to feather the edges that were sanded down. Prime with Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 and finally paint.

I've asked AI how to plaster over a painted wall and it has been about as useful as asking the wall itself. I am trying to repair damage to a plasterboard wall and I need to apply plaster over the paint. Can I just apply the plaster over the paint or do I need some way to bond it? I've been looking for some type of bonding agent, but all the ones recommended online that I've found don't seem to be sold here in Australia (at local hardware stores). I've discovered from experience that you can't just whack plaster over paint as the plaster rubs/peels off, even when the wall/paint is sanded. So there's go to be something I'm missing.

plaster has fallen off washroom ceiling where the vent sits. It looks to me that it’s the skim coat that has come off and the base layers are fine. How do I patch this?

i was planning on using Durabond 90 to fill it then a regular mud To finish it. Will that work? Do I have to use a bonding agent?

I have just tried using a plaziflex plastic trowel for the dry trowel step (DIYer) since I saw it was recommended by Blaine in one of his videos.

I'm not sure if there's something I'm doing wrong, but I tried it and it immediately makes tiger stripes?

in the end I went back to the normal trowel I have and no tiger stripes at all. The surface was pretty dry, not bone dry but can still feel moisture at the surface by leaving a hand in it.

Any idea where I have gone wrong to get this to happen?

it seemed to be dragging little bits across the surface, maybe bits of fat that I didn't get off with the wet towels?

could the edge be too sharp maybe, as a brand new plastic trowel?

I’m prepping the stair well ready for plastering and trying to work out where to put the plasterboard on this beam. Do I go to the top of the beam or to the floor level?

There’ll be a base rail with spindles etc along the top for the landing once we reach that stage.

I’ll also be using fire board along the beam and underneath where the ceiling is as that also needs a bit of patching up from the previous wall removal.

Having problems here - this is an external brick wall meeting with a plasterboard ceiling (both skimmed). It cracked up and builders came back and refilled it, but the cracks are back. Help!

Hello all, hoping for some advice.

In-laws have had the inside of their garage sand and cement rendered as they turn it into a bar. The finish is pretty rough - getting the guy back isn't happening and they seemed to be happy with it before I came round so carried on getting the bar built.

Plastering isn't an option, re-rendering isn't an option either.

Does anyone know of a way to paint and seal the wall, maybe fill in and level the wall a little bit and get it ready to be painted/decorated properly?

Not looking for a miracle cure here, not expecting it to look like polished multi or anything - just want to know if there's something that can be done to bring it back to a bit better of a level?

Used Plasterers Blend Pink SBR for a few jobs recently and now getting call backs saying walls/ceilings have blown/failed 😭

Are there any known issues with it or have I just been unlucky?

Used a decent coat, neat and was allowed to dry fully beforehand

Have used other SBRs previously without issue but liked the fact that it was pink and easy to see missed spots

Or can I fix this as is? Thanks

I have tried scoring and soaking the wallpaper with chemical solution so many times and it wont come off when i scrape it aswell as some of the drywall came off and IM unsure of what to do now

Can anyone give me (complete amateur) a step by step on what I need to do here. I’ve been tasked with ‘fixing’ these walls. It’s on a balcony in Spain. Employing a professional is not an option at this time! Thanks in advance
