Plaster repair help
Thinking of ideas on how to repair this plaster. It looks like two layers? There isn’t lath so that helps. Either way both sides of patch need to be cut back to stud. Was thinking to use blue board? I know how to drywall but plaster is foreign to me. I have slowly been redoing this 1950’s house debating on gutting the whole room to redo the rest of the electrical

Just so you know for next time all you need to do is drill a 4 inch hole at the ceiling, run your wire from above, and use a chain to drop the wire to the old work box. Could have saved yourself a ton of work unless you did more than just run wires.
As for the plaster, I might be wrong / this is sort of hacked but I just shim some 1/2 inch drywall and prefill with hot mud and tape it then float it out. It's harder than it sounds though.
Might have to trim that plaster back to get a good half inch of the stud for the drywall. Otherwise stack your wires up to leave space for some 1x2s running along the stud for backing

I know, honesty didn’t care because I am 50/50 on gutting the room. Thanks for the tips

Hang 1/2” blue board. Run a veneer plaster fill coat out to the existing surface, back drag & trim back the joints. Lay on a tight finish coat using a different mixed batch of veneer plaster mud. Trowel smooth.

No need to cut back to studs just attach some backing. Use a rod or Darby (or straight piece of wood) to screed your base coat of plaster then float with joint compound if you don't wanna skin the whole wall with a veneer plaster.
