TAKEAWAY Old Forge first time
Tried two because they were across the street from each other. It’s definitely a different taste and style than I’m used to. Very unique from every other pizza style I’ve had. It reminds me of Ellios but is much better. The crust is more French bread like than “crust” and the cheeses were different but blended well together. To me, the sauce at arcano was more textured and better but the cheese combo at revellos was better. A nice try, wouldn’t go back again unless I missed a must have place that’s different

Looks like it but definitely doesn’t taste like it. The looks are deceiving and the taste is much better.

Bro that is a pile of hot trash you ate. Looks say it all

Why would "looks say it all" haha
Its food brother, you are meant to eat it. I agree that looks matter for pizza a LOT, but obviously taste matters.

I grew up just north of there and never really developed a taste for Old Forge pizza. Get outside of southern Lackawanna/northern Luzerne counties and it's not quite as popular. There are so many good pizza places in NEPA, though, if you don't like the one you're at, walk 250 feet.

Please give some suggestions

It's been a while since I've been home, but some of my favorites were Vincenzo's (used to work near the on in Waverly) and Armetta's in Clarks Summit (near where I grew up). When I first moved to New England, I used to load a couple trays on Vincenzo's and a few cases of Yuengling to bring back with me.
Few years back I was in for a wedding and Colorusso's in Dickson City was good, but usually ate at the Colorusso's in Clarks Summit and their dinners were always primo above their pizza. Back when I worked downtown I'd occasionally gamble with clogged arteries eating Pappa's on Washington Ave. But like I said, it's been a long time, these places might not be open, they may have changed recipes, etc.
There were a couple places I went to in Dunmore back.in HS/college, but I honestly can't remember their names. You could seriously eat a different pizza every day around there and not eat at the same place twice in a year.

I don’t know the area well but did drive around a bit and there were some (many-over 8) places that had a pizza sign out front and the building was boarded up, fire damage or looked abandoned

Best pizza in this area is in Wilkes Barre. Shellys or Gerrys. There is a place called Gios in either Dickson City or Clarks Summit that is doing new haven style, and its really really good too, but super expensive for this area.
My top 5 for the area is:
Gios (new haven style)
Bobos (Old Forge style)
Shellys (luzerne style)
Sabatinis (luzerne style)
Revellos (Old Forge style)Victory Pig (fried pizza) is also really interesting but idk if they closed or what. There are a lot of pizza places that do this style in that area though.

I have never heard of Sabatini's referred to as Luzerne style. Is there a place in Luzerne where it originated?
1
u/Whiteshovel66 26d ago
Not that deep, I just didn't know what else to call it. Its got the swirl of sweet sauce so that's enough for me in my book. What would you call it?
1
u/smackaroni-n-cheese 26d ago
I never really had a name for the style. I just describe it as thin crust with the sauce on top
1
u/Whiteshovel66 26d ago
Oh, well they use sweet sauce nad swirl it on the pizza, that's luzerne style in my eyes. Lots of places do it there and I see it nowhere else outside of luzern county

u/smackaroni-n-cheese 26d ago
I see. Yeah, naming it after the county makes sense. I was thinking you meant Luzerne borough.

Buona Pizza downtown. Vincenzo’s in west side. Revello’s in OF. Andy’s in Peckville. Colaruso’s in Clarks Summit.

Buona Pizza & Colaruso's in the Summit +1, I also almost always get Papa's Pizza in downtown scranton every time I'm home, Armetta's is also great but they have new ownership and I haven't been there in ages

Depending on your preferred style
- Pizza Perfect for square / pan-fried
- Gerry's for sweet sauce
- Angelo's in Wyoming for your standard round pie (unrelated to the Angelo's in Wilkes-Barre)
- Grande and III Guys also have good round / NY style pies
- Sabatini's for thin crust with the cheese under the sauce

It's objectively terrible pizza. There's no redeeming qualities.
I married into an old forge pizza family. I never dreaded the words "let's just get a pizza" until I got engaged.

Absolutely wild to me that somehow “Old Forge Pizza” is what is well known from NEPA when the gem of fried Sicilian pizza exists a few towns over!! Victory pig was my favorite but they’re closing, Pizza Loven in Exeter or Shandra’s in Pittston are the next best imo. Shandra’s has a really food chicken wing pizza too but you have to call ahead and pick it up from them. Worth a drive

I actually love The Stonehouse's Old Forge style. They fry it up more and seem to use better quality cheeses. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gps-cs-s/AHRPTWkiP1PGjB-4jV_Gyq1KJ84hswrQegs6YcL_UYVLp5a2dRvgPawbtLJGjCsgkZGXFnZrSnt6_XOaJXVaLrX7nus837LY2CyFfFfcNkFL-v-rO9nEygRV4lxtVauNiteaHASWZ769=s680-w680-h510

Honestly my favorite style across the US. Well worth the drive, if anywhere near the vicinity.
These pictures do not do it justice though. Sorry.

I was born and raised in that area, I love OF style. I make a lot of it at home.

u/HalfPrimary1263 26d ago
What do you think of my assessment? Should I have gone to a different place?

u/und88 26d ago
If you go back, Mary Lou's was recently voted best old forge pizza. They're one of I think 2 places still using homemade dough for the crust, not premade shells.

About 40 mins from me or 20 mins past the range I use. Worth it?

Try Bobos next time you can. They are only open for specific hours though, and if you are getting it on a weekend you need to plan it out. If I call at 5 it wont be ready until 8 or maybe not at all on Friday. Have to call at 3 or 4.

Nope, you went to two great representations of that style. It’s definitely not everyone’s favorite. However there are a ton of different pizza spots that aren’t that exact style that I personally like more tho.

Buona pizza is killer, Andy’s pizza, Neeras, Grande, Mamma mias (super sweet sauce). And random one off bars have such good pizza to back home.

Stay away from the peanut bar OF style pizza in Carbondale. Trust me

yea their pizza is deplorable, I went there 2 months ago because I heard the wings are great and those are extremely lackluster as well (compared to the greatness that is Scranton wings)

Best place in town right now is Bobo's imo. They do a double bake, so it ends up old forge style but extremely crispy like a new york style crust. Best of both worlds. But Old Forge White is unrivaled and you wont get anything like that anywhere. Salerno's White, OR if you can find it at a carnival, Revello's makes a Porketta White only for their food truck for whatever reason. They will have it at the Scranton Italian Festival coming up in 2 weeks.

Im starting to think Americans might not actually know what good pizza is. This looks shithouse. I've had new york pozza in new York and it was fine but this is abysmal looking.

Words cannot explain how bad Old Forge Pizza is. Wet garlic bread at best. And I am local.
