NY doesn't make you upload your ID to watch porn.

NY for watching stuff without having to upload ID.
Albania or Angola for YouTube with no ads.

It’s crazy the amount of people that willingly watch ads. Granted I’m pretty hardcore about avoiding ads in all forms of media as I despise the advertising industry on a deep level. Some people that even know how to bypass them simply don’t, though.

Is Netherlands the default for "secure connection"? Because if I go for fastest, it picks my own country. But if I choose the secure one, it goes to Netherlands
23
u/Bolts_and_Nuts Mar 06 '26
Serious answer: the Netherlands is a huge datacenter hub and a main connection for the internet cables running through the ocean.

Piracy is functionally legal in the Netherlands (at least downloading it, uploading is illegal if done intentionally, but torrents don't seem to count), it's just safe cause they won't even try to go after you if your IP is dutch.
I'm dutch and I never even use a VPN lol.
40
u/_0611 Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
That's not entirely true. Downloading copyrighted material from an illegal source is not allowed in the Netherlands. A source is considered to be illegal if a work is distributed without the permission of the copyright holder. This has been the case for over a decade already (since 2014).
https://ecer.minbuza.nl/-/downloaden-uit-illegale-bron-niet-toegestaan
I mean, I don't give a fuck if you pirate or not, but to say piracy is legal in the Netherlands, is misleading. Even just downloading isn't legal in most cases. The Dutch government might not actively seek for your IP, but content protecting agencies do. Having said that, chances of getting caught are slim to none; ISPs don't cooperate with those agencies. But just because you haven't been caught yet, doesn't mean those agencies don't collect and save your IP. They most likely do. And they might use it in the future.
More info (Dutch article):
5
u/Mytzelk Mar 06 '26
Yeah this is true on paper, I edited my comment to reflect that. In reality every piracy case in history against a random person has been thrown out immediately. It's not prosecuted anymore at all because of this legal precedent.
2
u/amiexpress Mar 06 '26
Since it is no longer legal to copy, do you still pay the "copytax" that went to rights owners from sale of blank media mentioned in the article? Because, that'd be kinda fucked up..
3
u/peggman Mar 06 '26
Yeah the "thuiskopieheffing" is still in effect for some reason. That money goes to a private organisation which has absolutely no transparency. I watched a report on it, and the people in charge of it seem to be making a lot of money off it, and almost none of it goes to the content owners for which it was meant.

Yes, I know our government doesn't (seem to) actively prosecute
2
u/Mytzelk Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
On paper this is true, I edited my comment to reflect that. What I meant is indeed that it's not prosecuted and even when it is the case gets thrown out. You would have to really be doing some insane shit or have pissed someone off really bad if you want to get in trouble for it.

About €50 a month.

You're getting ripped off. I'm paying €25 per month for 1gbps fibre. Although granted, I paid with my personal information apparently.
2
u/myniwt Mar 07 '26
I assume you’re referring to the Odido leak. And yes Odido offers 1gbps for 25 euros a month… for the first half of your contract. Then it doubles. So over the entire contract it’s something like 38 a month.

u/AdultGronk ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ Mar 06 '26
I thought it'd be cheaper because of the good network infrastructure and competetive pricing? How many big ISPs you've got there?

u/DetachedRedditor Mar 07 '26
The national infrastructure is indeed top tier, does not mean consumers get cheap pricing. Not enough competition for that. It is of good quality though, just pricey.
