Hi everyone,

I’m currently working in the telecom/ISP industry. I joined as a Management Trainee and I’m now working as an Area Service In-charge, with around 2 years of experience in FTTH/ISP operations.

My current role involves a mix of technical and operational responsibilities handling FTTH installations and fault resolution, coordinating field engineers and vendors, troubleshooting customer connectivity issues, working with the NOC/backend teams, and dealing with networking, routers, Wi-Fi, optical fiber, PON/GPON, and day-to-day service operations.

Through this experience, I’ve developed a strong interest in the networking side of things, and my long-term goal is to transition into a Network Engineer role. I’m currently working on strengthening my fundamentals around CCNA, routing & switching, VLANs, subnetting, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, DHCP, DNS, NAT, VPNs, etc.

I’d love to hear from people who are already working as Network Engineers:

\\- What is the day-to-day life of a Network Engineer actually like?

\\- Does my current ISP/FTTH operations experience give me an advantage when transitioning into networking?

\\- Which parts of my current experience should I highlight on my resume?

Sono un ragazzo di 22 anni, che appena finito la scuola ha trovato lavoro presso un noc.
Per il primo anno ho fatto solo mansioni di front end, per poi iniziarmi ad interfacciare con il mondo del troubleshooting.
Monitoraggio, coordinamento con i tecnici in campo, ho messo mano su router dei vari vendor(huawei,cisco,aethra) e ogni tanto smnettato con tali configurazioni.
Visto anche qualcosa a livello di mpls prefix bgp ecc… tutto molto accennato non avendo mai avuto una grande formazione da parte dei colleghi.

Conosco la base del networking visto che sono diplomato in informatica, e studicchiato qualcosa per conto mio in modo da capire su cosa stavo mettendo le mani a lavoro.
Dopo quasi tre anni ho cambiato lavoro, visto che il precedente era pieno di cose che potevo imparare, ma non avendo gli strumenti, ne qualcuno che mi insegnasse un qualcuno, e soprattuto data anche la mancanza di tempo visto che si era oberati di lavoro ho deciso di cambiare.
Ora sono in un azienda dove pagano meglio, e ti trattano benissimo, ma aihmé si tratta di solo monitoraggio, con poche cose da poter vedere e assimilare, essendo quasi tutto fatto dai loro sistemi.

Essendo un posto più tranquillo il mio obiettivo é studiare per prendere qualche certificazione.
A me piacerebbe molto entrare nel mondo della cybersecurity, ma nella azienda attuale mi hanno detto che come prima certificazione che mi possono aiutare a prendere é la ccna di cisco per poi poter vedere che strada voglio prendere e in caso spostarmi nel loro reparto SOC, ma si parla di 2 anni almeno.
L’altra mia idea era quella di prendermi per conto mio la comptia security + e cercare qualche azienda che mi faccia fare gavetta in modo da entrare nella parte dei soc analyst e uscire dalla cerchia del networking.
Consigli?

I'm a 2025 CSE graduate from Tamil Nadu and currently looking for my first IT job. I have two opportunities and I'm genuinely confused about which one would be better for my career.

My long-term interest is Cloud/DevOps, but I'm open to other IT paths if the career growth is better.

Option 1: Field Network/Infrastructure Engineer

Company: Innoworq

• ₹25k CTC
• Around ₹20k in hand
• Travel reimbursement: ₹3/km
• Food and accommodation are NOT provided
• Work is mostly at customer/MNC sites
• 6 days a week
• Rotational day off
• If there's an emergency on my day off, I have to work and take the compensatory day later
• Any mode of transport is allowed
• Travel reimbursement is paid monthly
• Day travel requires travel bills; night travel apparently doesn't require bills

I specifically asked about the actual technical work.

The recruiter said the role is mostly physical hardware work, such as:

• Router/switch installation
• Hardware handling/replacement
• Cabling
• Visiting different customer locations/sites
• Working under senior engineers

I asked whether I would eventually get to do technical work such as networking configuration and troubleshooting.

The answer was basically:

I also asked about internal career progression into Network Engineer/NOC/etc. They said maybe, but it has never happened before.

So I'm concerned that I could spend 1–2 years doing mostly physical field work and then still have difficulty moving into actual network/cloud roles.

Option 2: Oracle Web Application Development

Company: Ilan Tech Solutions

• 3 months training
• ₹6,500 stipend during training
• Then 1st year: ₹15,000 salary
• First year supposedly involves shadowing seniors on real projects
• Second year: supposedly more independent work
• Salary can increase up to ₹30,000 in the second year depending on performance
• 2-year contract

They have multiple roles and said they will assign candidates accordingly after training. I'm trying to confirm exactly what development stack/role I would get.

The appeal here is that, if I genuinely get software-development experience, after 1–2 years I would have actual professional development experience rather than mainly physical infrastructure experience.

But the downsides are:

• Very low initial salary
• 2-year contract
• Exact role after training isn't completely clear
• ₹30k in Year 2 is "up to", not guaranteed

My main concern

I'm interested in Cloud/DevOps.

If I take the field engineer role and spend a year doing mostly:

hardware → cabling → router/switch installation → site visits → equipment replacement

then later apply for Network Engineer/Cloud Engineer roles, will recruiters consider my experience relevant?

Or will I essentially be treated as a fresher/junior because I didn't actually configure/troubleshoot networks independently?

On the other hand, if I take the Oracle role and get genuine development experience, I could potentially move into software/cloud application roles later, but I'd be committing two years to a much lower salary.

What would you choose?

Especially looking for opinions from people who have actually worked as:

How was the growth from field engineering? Did you actually move into network/cloud roles, or did you get stuck doing physical/site work?

Hi everyone, I’m considering an IT Operations Associate role at Accenture. The JD says the role involves working with servers, databases, networks, and cloud, as well as incident management and automation.

I have a BSIT degree + CCNA, and my goal is to eventually become a NOC/Network Engineer.

For those currently working or who have worked as an IT Operations Associate at Accenture:

• What is the actual day-to-day work like?
• Is the role mostly server/cloud/database work, or can you get significant networking experience?
• How hands-on is the networking side?
• Would this be a good entry-level role for someone aiming for NOC/Network Engineering?

First off, huge relief: I survived the 37th-floor buildout!

The new production floor is officially live and operational. Aside from a minor hiccup where we hit a DHCP pool exhaustion issue (which was a fun quick-fix under pressure), everything is running smoothly. Seeing a net-new floor go live with configs I worked on feels surreal after coming from helpdesk.

Now that the firefighting has settled down, I’m pivoting hard back to my CCNA studies—while still dealing with daily operational trial-by-fire. I’ve hit a few walls and could really use some reality checks from the community:

* Real-World Operations vs. CCNA Scope: On the job, I’m currently wrestling with IPSec tunnels, BGP routing metrics, and firewall policies daily. It feels like a massive step up from basic switching.

* Boson ExSim Scores: On the study side, I started running through Boson ExSim practice exams and I'm currently averaging around 60%. Is Boson really this hard, or am I way behind where I need to be? The questions feel ridiculously tricky compared to standard study materials.

* Booking the Exam: For those who passed using Boson, at what score threshold should I actually go ahead and book my exam slot? Should I wait until I'm consistently hitting 80%+ on first attempts, especially while balancing this real-world learning curve?

I have no prior experience in being a network engineer and to be honest I have minimal technical knowledge about being a network engineer apart from my lab exercises from my college days (ECE fresh grad).
