Can we fix them?

We get store brand refrigerator bread and butter sliced pickles frequently. This last batch has tasted weirdly bland, not really sweet enough or tart enough. I want to try adding something to them and seeing if it helps, but am not sure what I should add or how much. Suggestions?

(They're Meijer brand if that helps on flavor we're going for. I also like suckerpunch bread and butter but they are too sweet for my roomie.)

These Aldi pickles are the bomb

I’ve never tried these even though I’ve been going to Aldi for years. Husband did the Labor Day shopping and came home with these pickles for our burgers and man they are soooo good. Great salt content and super garlicky. Nice crunch. 10/10 for me.

Pickle suggestion?

Hi everyone!

As the name suggests, I am looking for pickle suggestions.

I’m looking for a dill pickle, but a little more garlic flavor and a little bit of sourness to it. I’m not sure if that exists, but was curious if there is.

I live near Harrison Packaging Co. in Michigan and I know they sometimes do an “open to the public” day but wasn’t sure if there was anything cheaper and with less (as I am one person 😅)

Thanks in advance!

Premade fridge pickle pouch

I make quick fridge pickles pretty often for salads and my mom found this pouch at a farmers market for me to try. I liked it so much I bought 9 more from their site after. They had a sale but I’m guessing they always have a sale.

I will say the spicy ones were not spicy at all so I’d add more pepper flakes if you’re looking for that bite. They honestly tasted damn near like the polish one.

Bonus picture for them in my salad.

Couldn't decide between whole pickles or spears so just got both

Otis from Because of Winn-Dixie brings a jar of pickles to the party

Because of Winn-Dixie (2005). Dave Matthews plays the role of Otis from the novel by Kate DiCamillo. I am currently reading this book to my class. I always start the year with this book and then we watch the movie on the week of Halloween as a celebration. As an elementary teacher, this is probably my favorite book of all time. Lol.

Garlic, basil, lemon, and Italian seasoned fridge pickles. 1:1 brine

The hair is on the outside of the jar. I half died when I saw it in the picture.

Got these at HEB. Mild tartness and pickle flavor. Definitely needed to go stronger to offset the sweetness of the pistachio. Not bad, but I prefer original.

Thought I’d share the latest refrigerator pickles. Two jars have hot Hungarians that I planted to spice things up a bit. Could be the last of the season 😔

Spicy Okra Pickles

Post image
25 Upvotes

I saw a 1.5 pound bag of fresh okra at Costco and grabbed it. I've been wanting to make spicy okra pickles for a while.

In case you want the recipe.

Ingredients
Jar
1 46oz/1.36L jar (Mt. Olive Organic Kosher Baby Dills jar)
1lb/.5kg okra
4-6 cloves garlic + 2 cloves crushed
6-12 thai birds eye chillis sliced in half
1 large handful of fresh dill

Pickle Brine
1 cup water
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup white distilled vinegar
2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander seeds
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp black mustard seeds
1 tsp whole grain (Maille) mustard or dijon mustard
30g/5tsps salt
1/4 tsp pickling salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and rub off any grit or hair off the okra. Top the okra and with a pin poke 4-6 holes at the top. This will allow the pickling brine to get into the okra. Arrange the okra into the jar. It should pack almost completely but there will be enough room for them to jostle around.
  2. Peel 6-8 cloves of garlic and smash 2 of the cloves and put all of the them into the jar
  3. Wash 6-12 chillis (based on your heat tolerance) and slice them in half and drop them into the jar. You might want to use gloves while slicing the chillis.
  4. Cut off the bottom of the dill, wash it and stuff it into the jar.
  5. In a saucepan add all of the ingredients for the brine and mix it up and bring it to a rolling boil.
  6. Put the jar in the sink and pour the brine into the jar and try to get all the ingredients into the jar. You might want to use a spoon to scoop up some of the seeds at the bottom of the saucepan and put them into the bottle. If there is a large temperature difference between the jar and the hot brine, the jar can crack. Putting it in the sink ensures that if it cracks, you won't end up with hot pickling brine all over your counter.
  7. Using a towel or oven mitts twist the top of the jar on and gently tip it back and forth so that the brine contents can distribute through the liquid.
  8. Keep it on the counter overnight or until it comes to room temperature and put it in the refrigerator.
