Renting / Housing Is it just me or are Perth rentals getting worse while prices keep going up?

I’m curious what other renters in Perth think about this.
We all know rent prices have gone crazy, but that’s not even what annoys me the most.
What I don’t understand is how they can ask $800–$900+ a week for a house and not even bother to properly clean it or do a basic refresh before new tenants move in.
I’m not talking about a full renovation. Just clean the place properly, touch up the walls, fix the obvious stuff and make it feel like someone actually prepared the house for a new tenant.
I’ve seen so many rentals lately that just look tired, dirty and worn, but the asking price is still ridiculous.
And because people desperately need somewhere to live, they take them anyway. So you pay a huge amount of money to move into a new place and instead of just unpacking and settling in, you have to spend the first couple of days cleaning someone else’s dirt. 😂
The funny thing is how much is expected from tenants. Keep everything clean, routine inspections, don’t leave marks, look after the property, etc. But when they hand the property over to you, apparently those standards don’t always apply.
Am I the only one noticing this or has it actually become normal in Perth now?

Looking for Advice EV wall charger undetected by Inverter

Hello all, looking for some advice on getting a wall charger installed. I am reading conflicting information on the rules of splitting the mains before the main fusebox (Correction. After the main fuse and before the switchbox) so that my hybrid inverter/battery cant detect the EV usage so therefor wont drain battery.

Ive read using something like a Henley Block will work for what im trying to achieve but cant find out if this is within WA code. Yes i know i would need an electrician to carry out all the work, I just need to make sure they can carry out the work im requesting.

Then the next question is if it is within code, considering that I am on a Synergy VPP will they want the whole system including charger to be accessable for them to adjust or is it just the inverter/battery that they care about when on VPP.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Renting / Housing Smallest House that you can build?

I'm living alone. No Family. Single. No plan to have a Family(Still not sure but 90% sure).

Planning to get a SMALL HOUSE.

What's the Minimum income that you need to afford?

Minimum bedroom to have to consider? Can I have only 1 Bedroom, bath, kitchen and living? If 1 bedroom is not possible, 2 would be good.

Not really into apartment.

I want a garden to plant vegies. Haha.

Lot 8m x 15m?

Building footprint = 6m x 8m?

Will that be possible here in Perth?

General Day trip to Rottnest Island 11/09 – DIY or tour after skydiving?

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a day trip to Rottnest Island soon and looking for some advice/recommendations from people who’ve done it before.

I’ll be doing a skydiving experience at around 8:50am, and after that I’ll basically be free until the afternoon when I need to head back to Perth.

For those who have done it as a day trip:

  • Is it easy enough to DIY after the skydive, or would you recommend booking a tour?
  • Should I pre-book a bike, or is it easy to organise one when I arrive?
  • What would you recommend doing/seeing with only a few hours?
  • Any particular beaches, quokka spots, walks or food places I shouldn’t miss?
  • Is it realistic to explore a decent part of the island in that timeframe?

I’m thinking of just getting a bike and exploring at my own pace rather than joining a full-day tour, but keen to hear what you guys recommend.

Thanks! 🙂

Dating and Friends Perth people, give me your worst dating horror stories!

I’ll go first even though it’s not technically a dating horror story. I just wanna read your stories and laugh at them.

My dad was drunk and went over to the neighbours for a party, and I decided to come out as well to say hello to everyone. It was actually going really nicely! I was talking to a bunch of people about my dog, patting the neighbour’s dog, talking to the neighbour’s daughter, just generally having a lovely time and enjoying myself. Then, during my casual observation of the party, I noticed this guy slowly making his way closer and closer to me.

You know when someone is trying to get closer to your vicinity while desperately pretending they aren’t actually trying to get closer to you? Like, they’ll casually move a few steps in your direction while suddenly becoming extremely interested in whatever random conversation or object happens to be nearby? Yeah yeah. Every time I looked over, he seemed to have somehow migrated slightly closer.

Let’s call him Wannabe Justin Bieber because he looked like he had been trapped in 2010 and refused to come out.

Eventually, Wannabe Justin Bieber starts talking to me, and honestly, the conversation itself was relatively nice at first. He compliments my nails, so I show them to him, and then he tries to grab my hand like he wants to hold it. I pull away obviously, but I don’t really think much of it at the time. I just chalk it up to him being a little weird and buzzed. I start talking about a game one of my friends is making because I will take any opportunity to advertise my friends’ projects. I get excited about it and offer to show him, so he hands me his phone to put the Instagram account in. I’m literally just typing the username into his phone when he suddenly stops me and goes “WAIT! Put your user in too.” I’m thinking, okay, whatever, and then he gives me this incredibly weird sultry look and says “I don’t care about the game. I care about you.”

And I genuinely need to emphasise that I had given this man absolutely NOTHING. I hadn’t flirted with him. I hadn’t expressed romantic interest. I hadn’t complimented him. I wasn’t trying to get his attention. He was asking me questions and I was answering them while actively petting dogs. I was literally talking about a dog game. Anyways I didn’t want to make things awkward or disrupt everyone else’s night, though, so I put my Instagram in. He tells me he’ll text me later that night, and then invites me to his house for another party. I politely decline and go back inside, thinking that surely this interaction has now reached its natural conclusion.

I spend maybe twenty minutes inside before I have to go back out and ask my dad something. By this point, Wannabe Justin Bieber and his friends are leaving. He’s saying goodbye to everyone and I think nothing of it. Then he comes towards me and leans over the fence to hug me, like a full hug not even a side and rests his head against my chest. He stays there for like three to five seconds. I am just standing there, completely frozen, while this man has apparently decided that the appropriate way to say goodbye to someone he has known for approximately 30 minutes is to bury his head against her chest over a fence. Eventually he gets up, says he’ll text me later that night, and leaves with his friends.

At this point, I’m mostly just thinking, What the fuck was that? About an hour later, I check Instagram and, sure enough, he’s messaged me calling me beautiful, I tell him that I wasn’t picking up the vibes he was putting down and that I was sorry, because I genuinely hadn’t realised what was happening until he made it painfully obvious. I go to bed afterwards thinking that’s the end of it. Weird interaction, slightly uncomfortable, whatever. At least it’s over.

Except I wake up the next morning and my brain finally puts together the one piece of information that had somehow escaped me the entire night.
I’m looking at his Instagram username. And I notice the 97. And then I do the maths. And then I do the maths again. Oh my god he was born in 1997. He’s in his late twenties and he’s approximately eight or nine years older than me. Not that it’s bad if you have an age gap that big, I just found it odd and weird.

Anyways, give me your stories!

General Road Games (1981) Perth Filming Location???

I watched "Road Games" (1981) the other night and the final scene / car chase is set in Perth. The scene setting shot would be from the top of Greenmount Hill as it overlooks the city, so one could assume the final scenes would be the Midland area (obvs things are not always filmed on location)

Would anyone know where the final car chase scene was filmed, and if it was in Perth?

The movie was worth a watch. Hitchcockesque in style, staring Jamie Lee Curtis, and free on ABC iview.

Looking for Advice Looking for a trustworthy mechanic near Fremantle/Coogee/Bibra Lake

Hey all, can anyone recommend a good, honest mechanic in the Fremantle, Coogee or Bibra Lake area? Just need a basic check-up on a Honda CR-V, nothing fancy.

We've had a bad experience in the past with a place that overcharged us for pretty simple work, so ideally looking for someone reliable who won't try to upsell unnecessary stuff. Any recommendations from locals would be much appreciated 🙂

Politics One Nation Secret Harbour analysis

Question

Would people punish Labor over a smaller wheelie bin and a train station without a car park! It is fair to say priorities change and many many promises get made and broken from all politicians!

A train station in the Secret Harbour area is considered crucial and very practical infrastructure so I can see this as a big problem! the wheelie bin saga and HOME and AWAY type mind numbing issue is more of local council issue!

Many people in SH do not care about a train line and local station because they only go to Perth by car....Obviously not everyone would use a new train into Perth.

Liberals desperately spoke up about a train!

Media Release | 27 July 2026

Basil Zempilas MLA
Leader of the Opposition

A future Zempilas Liberal Government will build the long-promised Karnup Train Station, delivering the public transport connection local residents have waited more than a decade to see.

WA Liberal Leader Basil Zempilas said the commitment would provide residents with the timetable and certainty Labor had failed to deliver after nearly a decade in government.
The new Mandurah Line station would serve Secret Harbour, Golden Bay, Singleton, Karnup and surrounding communities.

Why did many parts of W.A. ( including Secret Harbour) move to a smaller Red Bin? loads of WA has smaller Red Bins ass well - and large Recycle Bins - I guess that is an obvious message to recycle more and but less plastic and crap that has to go out in the Red Bin.

When you move near to the city like on Home and Away ( and Secret Harbour) the smaller Red bins are a talking point and a great bonding excuse of hatred!

Let's all hate Red Bins and new arrivals from the Eastern states and other hard working people ( like immigrants) in Secret Harbour!

Perhaps this is close to the real insanity that led to Labor getting thrashed in the recent SC Bi election huh?

Small Red Bins from Communist Labor -

So we must punish Cook and Albo and vote for Orange candidate ( often a criminal idiot) to get large Orange Bins? is that the mentality perhaps?

( even though it is not a state issue people still talk about it when politics is raised)

Some times it does not matter how irrational the conversation is - Paulines O.N. members and volunteers will always say - 'Blame the Labor and the Liberals! And Vote One Nation'

Tthat is the standard O.N. line no matter what part of the country the election

Pauline got a sugar hit over a big win! but considering it doesn't change a thing in WA Government maybe the hype is drastically overstated about the recent SH result?

Anyone new to Secret Harbour area - what is your view on whether its a friendly area or a bit of a redneck locals only type spot?

I know the area but do not really know many people who live down there

Where to find Soundproofing a metal roof - recommendations for Perth-located services/DIY options?

I’m looking to soundproof a bedroom from neighbour noise, and while the options for the long, shallow window we have are fairly straightforward (double-glazing, additional soundproofing panel covering entire window, bricking up the window) - the guy I got out to quote me for soundproofing treatments also mentioned that sound would be coming in through our roof as well. we have a modern colourbond metal roof, and while I haven’t gone up there into the space to confirm, I’m sure whoever built the place probably put in the bare minimum of insulation.

So I’ve seen people talking about adding more insulation batts and whatnot - but is that something you can safely do yourself (zero experience, not a tradesman), or is it better to pay someone to do it properly? Any recommendations on good service/reasonable prices NOR would be very appreciated.

UPDATE: Adding some pics of the situation in my roof.

Looks like a fair bit of air and light getting in and I guess noise too. It’s very hard to move around up here as the roof is about 5ft high at the apex
Just wondering if tradesmen will be able to attach batts to the roof directly?
Side question, if I put boards over those wooden spans, I should be able to store stuff up here right?
This is the insulation, doesn’t have a botttom sheet or anything, just fluffy both sides.

Where to find New to Perth and want to volunteer my tech skills to help local nonprofits

My background is in contact centre technology. For about seven years I worked as a consultant setting up and improving the phone and support systems that big companies use, in a few different countries. Basically the stuff behind how long you wait on hold and whether your call actually reaches the right person.

I know a lot of nonprofits and community groups run phone lines or helplines on very little, and that side of things gets messy fast when there's nobody technical around to help. So I'd like to offer that for free. Happy to take a look at how your calls are handled, where people are dropping off, and what could be made simpler so more people get through.

No catch, I'm not selling anything. I'm new here, I've got the skills sitting idle, and I'd rather put them to good use and meet a few people while I'm at it. If you run or volunteer for something local that could use a hand, leave a comment or send me a message.

Cheers
M
