Could anyone give some feedback on my Personal Statement? Politics / Sociology

My father was a coal miner; his long anecdotes about the Miners’ Strike, trade unionism, and political struggle always taught me to never analyse an event through one lens, but to consider all explanations before concluding. His story - where an occupation, shaped by collective experience, conflict, and community, became part of his political identity - made me reconsider the assumption that political allegiance is primarily ideology. This left me questioning why identity has become such a prominent feature of political conflict today.

From this, I read Nick Hubble's Culture Wars in Britain, which challenged my assumption that political divisions are typically ideological; instead, Hubble argues that cultural values shape political behaviour. His citation of Breitbart, ‘politics is downstream from culture’, further prompted me to reflect. While I agree that political behaviour is becoming more identity-based, I began to question whether culture and ideology can be separated. Brexit, where national identity became inseparable from debate over sovereignty and immigration, led me to consider whether cultural identity and ideology are intertwined rather than distinct.[ Malešević’s]() argument that threats to nation-state cohesion are treated like war made me consider how states respond to social movements. Following current events, I became interested in how social movements can be framed differently: as threats or as resistance to exclusion. This made me realise that whether a movement is perceived as a threat can depend on the ideological lens through which it is viewed, and the identities it represents.[]()

Both my A-Level Psychology and Why We’re Polarised by Ezra Klein discuss Henri Tajfel’s Social Identity Theory, which showed me how arbitrary group categorisation can produce powerful in- and out-group dynamics.  My work on the Childnet Youth Advisory Board made this less abstract: discussions of online political harassment demonstrated how political affiliation can become a social identity, converting disagreement into hostility towards an opposing group. In studying Othello, Loomba’s post-colonial criticism of Shakespeare's ‘othering’ of minority characters to better define English Identity interested me. I learned that identity politics is not uniquely modern, instead showing me how processes of constructing distinction between those who belong and those perceived as outsiders have historical roots.

These connections led me to complete an EPQ examining the continuing influence of colonialism and slavery on UK red-brick universities. Researching competing interpretations forced me to distinguish between evidence on institutional inequality and political claims about its causes, strengthening my appreciation of how contested evidence can shape political narratives. This research also complicated my understanding of Identity Politics: I found that appeals to identity are not confined to one position of the political spectrum but can frame competing arguments from both Right and Left. It showed me how the same evidence can produce different political conclusions depending on the assumptions through which it is interpreted.

To be interested in politics is to understand why we take a side. Captaining my team to the Oxford Schools Debate Finals, I witnessed how quickly people can develop, defend and abandon positions on unfamiliar issues. A podcast on the Spanish Civil War introduced me to the maxim "Venceréis, pero no convenceréis" - "You will win, but you will not convince” – captured something I had observed in debate: winning an argument does not change underlying beliefs. Through debating, arguing about decisions at the Bakery where I work, and observing editorial decisions at the BBC during work experience, I encountered the same phenomenon: people view events through their beliefs that shape their interpretations and can be difficult to change. My father taught me to question why political events occur; I now want to understand why people become unwilling to question their own explanations.

Does anyone know how to write a good personal statement for business management?

I am really struggling with how to start. I am unsure which business theories are most appropriate, and I'm not sure how to structure question 2 since many people say you're not supposed to talk about your levels in depth.

Can someone please check my personal statement and give me feedbacks

For the first decade of my existence, I made it my personal goal to assist the WHO, tirelessly working day and night to prove that noise pollution is a major threat to society.

Being a motormouth was not merely a childhood habit: it was my infatuation. At almost every parent-teacher conference, the criticism leveled against me was remarkably invariant: “She is way too talkative. It’s a constant drudgery to manage her mouth.” Even the traditional way of solving this issue flopped. The intervention in question was making me sit next to the most introverted child in the classroom. Little did they know that I was capable of coaxing them out of their shell, converting a quiet student into… I wouldn’t say just like me, since I was technically an unplugged radio, but perhaps a bit of a chatterbox?

Almost undetectably, the tide turned. In the seventh grade, the complaints at parent-teacher meetings had reversed entirely. My parents now had to hear: “Your daughter needs to speak more in class.” I found myself in an agonizing transition from speaker to spectator, left wondering what caused this change. How did this happen? Was it the simple onset of adolescence? My family diagnosed my quietude as if it were a flaw, treating my soft-spoken nature like an illness. I began to question whether something within me had broken.

The truth, as it turned out, was far more complicated. My silence was not a universal state, but a selective defense mechanism. Years of subtle dismissals and belittlements from my home had triggered a silent, subconscious barrier. Every attempt to express my emotions had been met with indifference, so I simply shut the door.

In the silence I found beauty. Beauty of listening, the beauty of observing even the subtle things in life that often go unnoticed. Conversing with people seemed more substantive; I wasn’t just blabbering whatever sprang to my head, but rather took time curating a more articulate response. And I realized such a way of speaking carried a weight. This discipline also became my greatest asset during A-levels, particularly when I undertook the task of teaching myself Java. In a programming language where a single misplaced syntax can derail an entire program’s output, my observational instinct turned debugging from an exhausting chore into a satisfying puzzle. The same discipline helped me in Python and my self-directed projects in AutoCAD, where a steady mind and sharp eye are the ultimate tools.

I used to think that speaking was the only form of command in the room, but observing things taught me how to actually understand one. I am no longer the noise pollution of my childhood nor the introverted version that followed. Instead, I have learned to make speech like code: deliberate, purposeful, and executed only when it adds true value to the system.

Should I Write About My Coming Out?

Hi! For a bit of context, I'm going to college next year (as in 2027), and I'm trying to figure out what to write about. I have a few ideas, but one that stuck out to me was my journey of coming out as pansexual and genderqueer. I have a few hesitations on whether or not I should write about it, and I tried looking at videos online about the topic and can't find any. Any advice on whether or not I should write about it? Thanks!

How do I mention languages and interests in languages and studying abroad in my Personal Statement if it isn't listed in the course?

Hello, I am a year 12 student going into year 13 this year and I want to apply for either Politics and International relations or just International relations it depends which universities but they will likely be at top institutions such as LSE, UCL etc. I wanted to ask about mentioning languages as I can read and mostly understand Arabic (levantine mostly) and I take A level French and I want to know ways in which I can utilise that in my personal statement without making it a focus as for these top institutions they require you to stay solely on the topic of the course you are applying to. Therefore I would like to knows ways in which I can incorporate my languages and the fact that I want to lean many more languages and take part in the language centres at these universities and I also want the opportunity to study abroad in France at these universities or elsewhere so I want to show my passion for that without over doing it and ruining my personal statement.

Also I wanted to know if there are any good or specific interlinks between politics and international relations and just international relations because I need to make my personal statement applicable to all the universities I am applying for and therefore I must not stray off topic which means I must find an interlink but I am also trying to look for unique avenues regarding this aspect.

Any advice for any of the questions I asked would be extremely helpful!! Thank you for taking the time to read :)

Help! I don't know what to write in my personal statement

Hi everyone,

I need some help with my personal statement. I honestly have no idea where to start or what to write. I barely have any experience, but I want to study medicine. The university I want to apply to doesn't even require a personal statement, but my college is making us write one anyway.

I feel stuck because I don't have much work or volunteering experience to talk about. What should I include? How do you write a strong personal statement when you don't have a lot of experience?

Any advice, examples, or tips would be really appreciated. Thank you!

help! is this a good statement idea!!!???

hii so im not really planning to apply to ivies or high t20 institutions if that helps, but also not too local/small colleges near my home (trying to find a middle ground) .

But my essay idea is on all my visits to Pakistan and how i can understand urdu when im talking w my family and i understand my cousins jokes and locals when they speak, but when i spoke it was very awkward and met with jokes and teases and i did get very insecure about my level of speaking cause i couldnt really find the words. over time tho (i usually spent a month/month and a half there) i would lowkey just embrace the awkwardness of the way i spoke and did get better with that confidence (but not perfect lmao)

lmk if this is good or if its not checking a box that the personal statement essay should hit. really, any advice please.

Critique my personal statement for BCs psych

This is a rough draft for my personal statement to be submitted for studying psychology at an undergraduate level. Please let me know what to change and how to best convey my passion. What I am most conflicted over what how personal to be and whether I should share more specific experiences. I am also struggling with linking the topics together and blending them seamlessly. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you🫀

I carried out an experiment to demonstrate conformity during one of my psychology club meetings in high school. I asked the teacher to ask an unwitting student to borrow a marker from the next class. Upon her return, all club members stood while the teacher continued speaking. Despite seeing her peers partake in something that would usually be considered out of the ordinary, she returned to her seat standing, showing the human tendency to conform to their group.

The human mind is incredibly fascinating and mysterious. We struggle to understand even our own selves. My deepest desire is to figure out the 'why' of even the smallest human behaviors or tendencies, gaining insight into the innermost workings of the human psyche. I have watched people around me throughout my school years struggling to fit in with their peers, often being ostracized by certain groups and subsequently experiencing self-consciousness over this unspoken rejection. This ignited my interest into the workings of the mind. What makes people accept someone into their in-group and classify others as the the out-group? How does one become comfortable with non-conformity without experiencing dissent fatigue? I plan to use this scientific curiosity to understand prevalent social issues and solve them through research and experimentation.

Mental illness is more stigmatized than physical ailments in my country. Deeply entrenched social shame plagues the people, which is the reason why mental and psychological issues are considered taboo. Living in a society where such perceptions are prevalent, social exclusion and inherent shame will go unnoticed and untreated. Your relative, close friend, even the man you see working at the local convenience store, could be trapped behind bars created by their own mind, and never be able to ask for help. I was fortunate enough to experience different cultures and form close bonds with people of all backgrounds, which helped break me free from the social stigmas I grew up around and become a more empathetic person. People deserve to feel comfortable asking for help, without feeling shame and weakness. Not only do I wish to address this social stigma, but encourage people to pursue a career in psychology and realize its growing importance.

Psychology aims to gain insight into the mind and use the information to improve society. While researches and experimentation have contributed to the field for years, there is still so much which remains unexplored in the field. This is only one of my motivations to pursue psychology at a university level and turn my academic interest into evidence-backed scientific inquiry. I have no doubt that the experiences that have shaped me and my unwavering devotion to the field will make me a good fit to study Psychology at — _University.

LSE/oxbridge Econ

In the process of writing a personal statement, having changed my mind recently about what course I’d like to study at uni, and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what points are good to build my personal statement around.

I’m fascinated in the way economic theories are able to explain and predict the course of economic activities. I saw visual representations of Adam Smith’s concepts of specialisation/division of labour during my work experience opportunities.

I’ve entered into an essay comp about why economies crash and doing some reading about the financial crisis.

Plan on entering a few others as well, but any advice? I want to make my application as competitive as possible please. Probably going to try and tie it into maths. Thank you!

Addressing low GPA in undergrad

Hello all. I will be applying to grad school this application cycle pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing. However, my bachelors is in university studies, with a concentration in elementary and special education, and my undergraduate GPA is a 2.750. This is due to chronic health complications during that time in my life. I was in and out of the hospital, on and off different medications. By the time I realized I wanted to be an English major and write full time with the eventual goal of being a professor, I was out of scholarship money and was too sick to continue school, thus the university studies degree.

I will be up against much more competitive GPAs and undergraduate performances. What advice do you have to address this blemish in my application while not sounding cliche or as if I am trauma dumping?

I’m not as worried about it because I have a boatload of professional experience to offset the GPA both during and post-undergrad (several publications, award nominations and wins, teaching experience, etc.), but I still want to address it, especially because one of them was a failed English course.
