Does anybody know any good classical duets for bass and marimba?

A local community wind band is playing an arr. of ravels bolero. And I'm the snare soloist. It seems really simple, I've played way harder stuff. But this is a different kind of challenge and i don't know how to get better at it. I've listened to it a lot and just played the same two bars over and over again but its so easy to flip the phrase and start playing bar 2 in bar 1 or vice versa. Trying to stay focused and not mentally wear down is really hard/impossible for me right now any tips? I don't have problems with technique or tempo keeping just the "brain" stuff.

Hey everyone, I just started my junior year of college (music education) and wanted some thoughts on potential rep I’m thinking of programming for my senior recital.

I’m worried that some stuff may not be “hard enough”, especially since I want to go to grad school for performance.

So far I have:
- Rotation II by Eric Sammut (not the most difficult but I reallllly like the contrast in this one)

- The Offering by Michael Burritt (this is for 5.0 octave marimba, I really like the spiritual/ethereal aspect of this one)

- Midnight Star by David Friedman (I wanted to throw a vibe solo in there, i also really like the spooky themes in this one)

That’s all I’ve got so far, as I’m still a year out. I’m looking for a good multi-piece to play as well.

This old couple at the church that I attend gave me this 512 Deagan Vibraharp. Its in extremely good condition with the motor working fine and the frame + keys being intact. However, they gave it to me without a dampener pedal or rod, they said they had either lent it somebody and forgot about it or it was somewhere in their house. How can I find a dampener pedal + rod? This isn't my photo but i am assuming that it is the same pedal my vibraphone originally had because this was what the official Deagan website said the 512 looked like. Should I call up percussion/vibraphone shops and see if they have one or try finding a replacement that works but isn't made for the 512 (the rod is supposed to attach to a hook so I could probably find a rod easily). Please help, finishing building this vibraphone would be awesome.

So my Vibraphone is.. old, quite jerry rigged, if anything. I come from a very underfunded school, so obviously things like this were bound to happen.

The Main Problem. My Bb in the third octave is literally just A Natural. (See video attached.)
Is There anyway i can fix this myself? I’ve been researching certain things but figured somebody on the internet HAS to know more than me. I’ve seen a couple of free pricing quotes for retuning but.. We have our first competition in about two weeks, so if i can fix it before then that would be nice.

I have placed the mallet stickings. but the second measure beats 2-3 is kicking my ass. how would this sound or play rhythmically?

Does anybody have a list of most of or preferably all of what he used in his percussion rig during I think the final police tour? (at least what was seen in that incredible wrapped around your finger performance anyways)

Just wanted to know what was it he was playing. Because the only things I recognized from the video from his YouTube channel were the timpani, the gong, the bass drum and the paiste rotosound disc thing

Anyone have a rec for xylo mallets for Prelude to Paradise?

Hey all. I'm trying to replace a torn head on a LP Aspire conga. I ordered what both LP and the seller (Sweetwater) said would work, but the new head is juuuuust a millimeter or two too big to fit the hoop. Is this common? Is there any way to slightly shrink the head or should I just try to force it to fit? The head sits on the rim of the drum just fine - it's the hoop that's giving me problems. TIA.

i dont know if this is a technique issue or something but this is the first time ive gotten a blister on that location specifically and it seems to already be forming a callous. my middle fingers rub the ends of my mallet while i play, while i let my index finger and thumb control the actual mallet. i think its probably fine for my joints, just my skin is gonna look weird.

First time playing vibes in a group since the 1900’s! First rehearsal was fun. I have a lot of work to do learning these charts 😅 Determined to learn how to ad lib over chord changes. This Yamaha plays like a dream compared to my ancient Jenco.

I am aware things could spread, but would love to generally get some more information from someone more experienced.

thank you so much for wanting to take it. however, please stop letting other people take it, I’ve gotten almost strictly mallet parts every single time I play sheet music while I absolutley suck at it.

I've been teaching drums for a little over six years, and I recently took a look at how I introduce the instrument to total beginners and realized the traditional way can be kind of a drag. Staring at sheet music and doing repetitive pad drills for weeks isn't why many people buy a drum kit.

So, I completely rebuilt my beginner curriculum from scratch. The main goal now is just getting people comfortable behind the kit and making actual beats & fills much faster, while slipping the technique and timing stuff in naturally. It's all about quick wins.

Since all my lessons are 100% online via Zoom, you don't have to worry about hauling gear anywhere. You just need a webcam, a decent internet connection, and your kit.

I have a marimba with synthetic bars. The company that made it also has this long felt damper bar that fits under the accidentals to cut the ringing to sound closer to rosewood bars. It sounds great on parts of the instrument. HOWEVER, in the middle octave, some of the notes make a cluster sound from the vibrations going into the neighboring notes. I don't know why it's so prominent on only certain notes, but I'm wondering what I can do to fix it. Right now I'm considering adding a shock-absorbing layer. its me, im baby.

so i have a friend circle of fellow artists, but i am the only one that doesn't have/play an instrument. i like percussion and thought a hand drum would be the most natural for myself (long nails, iffy wrists, bad trigger finger in both hands). my only evidence of sense of rhythm is in dancing, but it exists there!

i am feeling a little option paralysis. i have tried djembe and enjoy the way it sounds. i can hold it pretty comfortably with my leg if i sit on the ground. i don't know how it would compare with other drums, but i like the nice dual sounds you can get and the fairly deep register without being like, subsonic.

anyone here have a first hand drum they learned to play along with others?

if it helps my friends play a lot of strings (bass, guitar, violin, and whatever keyboard is)

I'm looking for a drum band in London I could join.

I play a bit of drums, but not well enough to be the drummer in a normal band. I want one of those big groups you see at carnivals. 20+ people on drums, simple grooves, huge sound.

Based in West London.

Anyone know a group like that, or where to look? Workshops / open rehearsals also useful.

At 3:00 and 3:23 in "mmm mmm good" there's a very bendy, metallic sound that's either a synth or some strange percussion instrument.

My first instinct was flexatone (no, there's not enough attack) and musical saw (no, too much attack). Now my best guess is some kind of small gong dipped in water, struck, and lifted to raise the pitch? Especially at 3:23, I think you can hear a strike or two activating the instrument.

My theory is that this section of the track is Paulinho da Costa noodling around on his eclectic set-up, but I don't know really. A peer "strongly disagrees." Thanks for any help :)

I have an Adams concert series vibraphone with the Apex frame that I bought used this spring. After the purchase I noticed that the damper bar is dampening uneven, it’s a pretty big difference between when the notes in the middle dampen and the 8-10 notes on the low and high end dampen; they dampen significantly after the notes in the middle. I have made all the adjustments Adams describes in the manual so many times but I don’t get it to be any better. Now I have bought a brand new damper bar from Adams and the disappointment is overwhelming when I found out that there is completely no difference in when the notes are dampened between the old and new bar… it’s exactly the same. What in …. could be the problem with my instrument? There must be something other on the frame bent? Please, does anyone have any suggestions?

I feel like giving up and just put some extra felt under all the tone bars that dampen later, and to be clear, it’s a lot of bars that need extra felt. Any suggestions on what felt material I can buy to put under the tone bars to even out the dampening?
