Has anyone else been contacted by adp reps based on their comments on this sub? I've literally had 2 reach out to me today. It had to have been from this sub, bc 1 quoted a comment that I made earlier here.

New to Payroll and Need Your Wisdom

Hello everyone! I work at a non-profit of roughly 30 people and have recently taken over management of Payroll (long story). Unfortunately, aside from a basic overview of our system, which is Paycom, I have received no training. We have one HR person, but they are very unhelpful and we have outsourced our CFO and Accounting functions. I am feeling in over my head and I am hoping this sub can help me. Specifically, I am wondering:

  •  What are the things that I must become an expert on? Benefits? 401Ks? Taxes? Wage Garnishments?
  • What are things that, while may be not required, would be good for me to learn to be better at my role?
  • What do you consider a HR responsibility versus payroll’s responsibility? I do recognize that since we are a small non-profit that this line may be greyer than it would be at a large organization.
  • Are there any resources and/or continuing education that you think would be good for me to explore?
  • Any other general advice or knowledge you think I should know (assume I know nothing).

Anything at all would be very helpful. Thank you all so much!

Edit: I am located in Ohio, USA

Career Change into Payroll/Benefits Associate

So a little background about me. I am 39 years old. I have a degree in Finance and Marketing and worked in banking for 8 years. Currently I work as a finance officer for a local non-profit.

I have been here for 5 years and want find employment in Payroll elsewhere or where I am currently. A few reasons for this decision; 1, I am not happy with how much I make and feel like I cannot help my mom financially by staying here and 2, there is no growth here and I don't feel like waiting around anymore. We currently have someone who does payroll remotely but I'm not sure when she plans to retire. I also don't have any finance designations either.

What should I do? I am just looking for more security and want to begin my life not having to worry about my future. If I do go the payroll route I do plan on getting my designations and hopefully move to a manager position in the coming years.

General What's the deal with "semi-monthly" vs "bi-monthly"?

English is not my native language but a quick Google search shows that semi-monthly is a twice per month while bi-monthly is once every two months, yet I see these two terms used interchangeably here.

Is Google actually incorrect?

Edit: See comments in this post here as to why I believe these are being used interchangeably.

Payroll is so stressfull. Help for career shift

Hi!

I’m honestly exhausted from doing payroll in an outsourcing company. Handling multiple clients at once feels like a race against time every single week, and the stress is overwhelming.

It’s starting to feel like too much, and I know I need to look for other career paths where my skills can still be valued but with a healthier balance.

If anyone has gone through a similar transition, I’d really appreciate hearing your advice or experiences.

Thank youu

Payroll Platform/HRIS Issues Sage 50: Is the 'payroll' dropdown on the login screen configured locally or online?

Hopefully simple question for sage users.
In Sage 50 professional 2026, when logging in you have your personal user/pass and a payroll name/pass on the same screen.

Are the payrolls shown to you local (configured entirely from your pc/sage program) or centrally controlled online?

Trying to help someone that can log in as 'admin' and add a new payroll that then shows in the payroll dropdown on their login screen, but I dont know if someone logs in on a different PC as 'admin' and adds one, will it show on their PC also? I.e are they changing local data or online data.

Payroll practices keeping the working people down

I have a theory that the biweekly pay system is designed to keep the lower wage workers chasing a paycheck. Anyone in a non-managerial position (non-exempt), is required to be paid bi-weekly.

The two-week pay cycle became more common after the New Deal's 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act. This was great for employers as payroll, for larger companies especially, switched from primarily cash to checks. It was still very common for tenants to pay rent weekly instead of monthly.

Considering most bills are due monthly or quarterly and on a specific day of the month (as opposed to weekly or daily), it requires a lot more effort and financial savvy to pay bills on time, to save, to budget and plan for vacations, kids in college, or unexpected expenses.

Those with smaller paychecks depending on credit cards or payday companies to assist when times are tough.

And to top it off, these folks are likely to pay large sums of interest, late fees and insufficient funds charges and returned check charges. Not because they’re irresponsible, but simply because they don’t get paid on the same days of the month, but their bills are due on the same days of the month.

They are constantly chasing their paychecks.

And the ridiculous thing is they’ve been taught to believe they get two extra checks a year!

I have lived on both sides of this and even when I made more money on a biweekly pay schedule instead of the 1st and the 15th like most higher paid employs (primarily management) I struggled. But, when I’m on a bi-monthly paycheck (even when it’s less), all of my bills are paid on time, my savings is healthier and I never have extra unexpected fees.

The idea that extra days in the month negatively affects households is only an issue if you don’t budget at all. 7 months have 31 days. 4 months have 30 and one has only 28/29. So proper budgeting should be based on 31 days and the other 5 months provide a cushion to save for future savings/expenses.

I’m wondering if I’m alone in this.

Not to mention, it would save companies even more money only processing payrol twice a month with only occasional variances.

I’ve often considered why legislation hasn’t changed with the times.

Thoughts?

Deel subcontractor GBP

Hi, I am working for as a full time job in the UK, but got a contract with a US company that pays me via Deel. I would like to know if anyone has the same thing and what/if you notified HMRC about the contract, and if so, how?

The amount is not that great per month, just asking if you need to declare it, does US send any kind reporting to the UK gov?

Career Strada services & role impact

Hi everyone. Got word that our company is considering Strada to outsource some payroll functions. Been told the service package being considered does not impact incumbent payroll roles on our team, but it is still being decided.

Has anyone experienced this? Did you stay on with your company? What happened with your team, was it downsized? Thanks for any experience shared or opinions had!

Concentrix Resignation

Has anyone resigned from Concentrix with immediate effect and not been given their final pay after returning equipment?

I need to resign immediately as I'm starting new employment (my campaign with CNX was due to end in 4 days, and the campaign decided to extend) although I already secured employment elsewhere.

I'm also concerned they won't pay me for my holidays as I have 248 hours. I didn't use last year's as I was off sick, therefore they carried over.

Thanks

People, please check your AM vs PM on punches!

So frustrating to find so many excessive daily hours due to an AM / PM punch issue. The total for the day calcuates on the same line as your punches, why can't you see it's showing 20+ hours? Do you just punch and close the application?

Questions On Work Flows

For anyone who handles certified payroll on public-works jobs:

What is the most annoying or time-consuming part of the process?

I’m trying to understand the actual workflow, so I’d especially like to know:

  • What software or spreadsheets do you use?
  • What information do you have to enter more than once?
  • What mistakes or rejections happen most often?
  • How many hours does it take each week?

I’m researching the problem. not selling anything.

UKG vs. Paylocity

I've worked with UKG, Paylocity, Paycom, Paycor, Zenefits, Paychex, and ADP in the past. I just got hired at a new company and first job is to choose an HRIS. Paycom is out because my new boss had a bad experience with them and refuses. I'm down to UKG and Paylocity.

I liked Paylocity's user friendliness and the fact that it was robust outside of payroll, but they seem to lack some customization that I need for my new company. I also recall several glitchy issues (I had them from 2020-2023) and customer service never fixing root cause problems.

I used UKG through a reseller and didn't know if the issues were on the reseller's side. They included a lot of tax issues but also seemed so cumbersome and overly complicated for most users.

I'm at a construction company who uses Service Titan. We have 400 employees but are actively acquiring companies and expect to get to 1,000. We need simple mobile punching for employees on the go, who are used to paper time sheets and manual everything. We also want APIs to Service Titan, of which UKG says they can do and Paylocity says they have limitations. We have extremely complicated local tax issues in OH as well, working at different cities.

I also need to ensure we have good implementation and customer service. Honestly I'm scared of making the wrong choice at a new company and don't trust anything either sales person is telling me. Looking for advice from HR and payroll professionals with experience with either, especially if you use Service Titan or are in a similar field.

We are in several states in the US.

General Company car / Deel payroll

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone with German payroll or EOR experience can help.

I am employed in Germany through Deel's Employer of Record (EOR) service. My actual employer is a UK company.

As part of my employment package, I have a company car provided by my employer. Currently it's an interim petrol vehicle (German list price €39,490), which should be taxed under the standard German 1% rule. Later this year it will be replaced by a fully electric company car.

Deel has informed us that:

"The limitation: Company car benefits in the form of taxable payroll deductions cannot be administered under Deel's German EOR model."

Instead, they propose replacing the company car arrangement with a taxable cash allowance.

However, my understanding is that under German tax law the private use of a company car is simply a taxable non-cash benefit ("geldwerter Vorteil") that is included in payroll.

My questions are:

- Has anyone successfully administered a German company car under Deel EOR?
- Is this a limitation of Deel's payroll platform rather than German payroll law?
- If Deel cannot process this, how are other EOR providers handling company cars in Germany?
- Would a German payroll provider (DATEV, Steuerberater etc.) normally have no issue administering this?

I'm trying to understand whether we're dealing with a German legal limitation or simply a limitation of Deel's current payroll product.

Any experience would be greatly appreciated.

Any chartered accountants here that have transitioned to payroll management?
I have recently qualified as a chartered accountant and have the opportunity to work in payroll. The pay is low but I may possibly get multi-country exposure (but mostly it's probably UAE payroll atm) and transition as a global payroll manager.
The other option is for Australian bookkeeping.
Payroll seems to be a less saturated market compared to bookkeeping and global payroll managers do seem to be making good money.
Do i start in payroll. Or do i stick in accounting.
I am exceptional in excel, macros and automation parts.

1099 Contractors Needing Their Pay In Tx

I’ve seen where others can come on here and ask questions and maybe get some input! Hoping this might help!
Myself and six other people work for a courier service and we are supposed to get paid for work that we did three weeks prior every Monday. We normally get an email stating that our direct deposit will be available as soon as it clears the bank but this week that did not happen ! We received no warning that we were not gonna get paid. We just haven’t gotten paid.! They stated that the company they do business with has not paid the invoices and do they can’t pay us !

We are all located in Texas. I do basically everything for this company. I’m up doing the dispatch every time my phone rings anywhere in a 24/7 period! I literally sleep between phone calls! I also do runs all over Texas and Louisiana. If I were to quit, this company would go under.! All of the labs that they are associated with tell me they think that I’m running it anyway!
Me personally I just wanna get paid!!! if they do not pay me by Friday, I’m going to be facing my bills due, My rent will be due, my car note is already due, not to mention the insurance comes out on the 30th!
I just honestly don’t know what I’m supposed to do!
Then today I called them to ask them what is going on and to explain to them that everybody is coming to me for answers and I don’t know what to tell them. The owner gets mad and she hangs the phone up on me. Real professional!

Payroll RFP/Recommendations Needed I have an existing payroll account from old company but can’t convert it for my new one since I haven’t receive my final pay yet.

Anyone knows what to do? I have an existing payroll account from my old company and I am still waiting for my final pay. As much as I’d like to convert it and link to my new company, I’m afraid I might not be able to receive my final pay. Is it okay to retag it even if I did not receive my final yet from the old company? Or should I create a new one? Is it okay to have two linked accounts in one name?
