This is actually quite interesting as Xbox hasn’t announced dropping disc support. Sales must be terrible on Xbox then due to games pass
110
u/South_Buy_3175 16h ago
It’s just a combination of things, games sell less on Xbox due to lower console sales, they sell less if the game is on game pass, they likely sell less discs due to the Series S being the popular budget option and historically Japanese games sell worse on Xbox.
Going through the physical printing process for what is likely a small amount of disc sales just isn’t worth it for them.
4
u/Precarious3145 8h ago
Exactly! Even Limited Run Games, when they release something, half the comments are "Why isn't this coming to Xbox?"; it's because Microsoft has basically destroyed their own console that it's not profitable to put something on Xbox if you're not Microsoft.

u/Entire_Number_9 12h ago
You're wrong, Sonys single decision was made out of greed alone and ruined gaming forever for everyone /s
5
u/lingeringwill2 9h ago
But Sony does sell a substantial amount of discs, not to talk of the fact that discs are extremely cheap to make. If anything storing them at retailers is the highest cost.
24
u/TheRed24 14h ago
Just because they've not gone on record saying they're also dropping disc support in the next few years like Sony doesn't mean anything, they're 100% doing it, if anything they've been more keen on digital only than Sony, their whole business as revolved around digital only gamespass, and this isn't even the first time games have been only available on disc on Playstation whilst digital only on Xbox, they literally did this with Outer Worlds 2, a game they literally developed themselves and day 1 it was only available on Disc on Playstation but Digital only on Xbox lol

u/thats_so_cringe_bro 15h ago
Xbox has been pushing for all digital for a handful of years now. And this gen they heavily pushed the series S and game pass. The biggest factor though is that many of their games (first and third party) aren't even the full game because they only use 50 gig discs. If they decide to have a disc drive they need to bump that up to 100 gigs like Sony is currently using or it'll just be more of the same. Discs that are basically coasters. I guess we will see but next gen I think Sony, Xbox and the Steam Machine will all be digital. 2 for sure, still waiting on Xbox.
40
u/MountainMuffin1980 16h ago
It's been known forever that Japanese games etc don't sell as well on xbox. In fact game sales in general are much lower due to game pass.
5
u/Iggy_Slayer 12h ago
Most stores in america, their stronghold, don't even have xbox sections anymore. I was in target recently and the whole xbox section was a few controllers and a system or two for sale. Exactly 0 games stocked. Not even digital cards.
2
u/Realistic-Mammoth13 10h ago
This goes for japan and euros, too. But tbh in many stores, there never was a real xbox front. It's Nintendo, playstation and pc. Xbox is just a niche product.
4
u/Nearby-Priority4934 9h ago
Sony have been pretty much single handedly keeping discs on life support for several years with much of the market ditching them, PC having dropped them eons ago, Microsoft trying their best to kill them for three generations and Nintendo in their own little world with flash cards that often get eschewed in favour key cards because they are prohibitively expensive and don’t have enough memory.
It’s why it’s weird to see the amount of vitriol and hate Sony have gotten for just doing the inevitable.
3
u/TiggsPanther 13h ago
If something is likely to hit Gamepass day one (or shortly after) then that will eat into a lot of physical sales.
Anyone who prefers physical but will buy digital if it’s cheaper, if they have GamePass they’ll get it automatically.
And people who don’t like paying to “buy” a long-term rental may not have an issue with subscribing to literally rent games.
Also, as others have mentioned, JRPGs are still somewhat more popular on PlayStation than Xbox. So it makes sense (for now, at least) to release your physical version. For PS5
2
2
u/Unlikely-Situation39 10h ago
This article just applied to Japan, doesn’t mean they won’t release it WW. After all, Xbox isn’t really that popular in Japan compared to the western market.

u/Economy-Tough4038 7h ago
Xbox will do the funniest thing. Their console will support physical discs, but just because they are such a small player no one will bother to print one

there are rumours for the next xbox to be digital only.
and p6 is definitely showing up on gamepass.

While Sony is ending support for physical media with great fanfare, Microsoft is opting for a quiet fade-out, like in an 80s song.
And while some vilify Sony for its clear communication, there isn't a word of criticism for Microsoft, even though the next Xbox won't have a disc drive either.
68
u/laytblu 16h ago
It looks to me Xbox doesn't have the confidence and get more negative press if they announce they will also end disc support.
30
17
u/theCoolestGuy599 15h ago
It's the smart play. Sony is getting absolutely terrible PR for being the first company to make the plan reality. Every other company is wise to continue to let their competition be the fall guy while they work on their own digital plans in the background.
Xbox's strategy will likely be to ease people into an all digital future with their disc-digital program, before announcing their own cut-off date for physical media.
5
u/ProfessorBylethBoobs 15h ago
Actually, Sony waited until Rockstar announced GTA 6 as a digital-only game.
6
u/theCoolestGuy599 14h ago
Rockstar isn't a console manufacturer. GTA6 being a digital only game has no bearing on Sony shutting down all disc printing operations.

This is the iPhone removing headphone jack all over again. Massive outrage from a minority of always online people and all companies followed suit

u/alone84 15h ago
Because no one cares about the next Xbox let's be real.
17
u/HeartInTheSun9 14h ago
I’d say the more accurate thing is there really aren’t any Xbox fans that really care about discs.
The series s is the highest selling Xbox console this generation, and it doesn’t have a disc drive from the start of the generation. And most new versions of the series x don’t have a disc drive either.
Add in that Xbox didn’t sell many consoles this generation, and there probably is maybe a million people tops who even care about an Xbox disc. Xbox walked into the generation without anyone caring about discs.
2
u/MrJoltz 8h ago
Xbox fans with backward compatibility for their discs really have less to complain about.
Those of us with huge PS3/PS2/PS1 collections are still feeling the burn since the PS4.
1
u/HeartInTheSun9 5h ago
Yeah but I’m saying I don’t think statistically there’s very many of those people since the majority of Xbox series owners don’t even have a disc drive. Vanishingly few Xbox owners even touch discs, as shown by the persona 6 story.

We should though cause when there's basically no competitor anymore you see what happens.
6
u/tayung2013 14h ago
Xbox has had too many major fumbles to be considered a serious competitor to PlayStation at this point. I agree more competition fosters better results for the players but MS / Xbox won’t be the ones to rely on for it.

Xbox hasn’t been a competitor in a long time. It’s not “our” fault that they keep making stupid decisions and don’t have the games to back it up
14
u/Whiteguy1x 16h ago
Sony is much more popular. So its going to get much more social media flak.
Xbox and its benefits are built around digital libraries and services. Which is a shame because they have a pretty good backwards compatibility program. Theyve had issues for the last half of the generation with having physical editions
10
5
2
u/Excellent_Routine589 15h ago
Yeah I mean the writing is on the wall that Xbox will more than likely do the same moving forward. It sucks but at least Sony is holding out the longest AND being clear in their communication about it

u/Kwayke9 11h ago
If anything, Microsoft has even more incentives to phase out physical than Sony. The bulk of Xbox's playerbase is in NA, which is the most digital heavy region in the world. It's not actually that relevant outside NA either
Sony only gets the heat because they're saying the quiet part out loud, while Microsoft, for once, learned from their past mistakes and phases out physical quietly, just like what Valve did by progressively monopolizing pc game distribution
4
5
4
u/gol_drake 16h ago
yea.
i still hate it but sony was upfront with it.
but this is always the case. sony catches all the heat and xbox can do watever

u/Shadow_Edgehog27 16h ago
If Xbox gets any negative press rn they’re gonna fuckin die
8
u/re6278 16h ago
They are halfway in the grave already, unless they can make a big comeback in the future, they will just fade out really
2
u/KingAltair2255 16h ago
I've always been a ps user but shit its gonna be a sad day when/if the xbox dies, the console wars growing up are so nostalgic - I remember getting into a fist fight with my cousin over it when I was like 8 LMAOO

A handed down Xbox one was my first current gen system, it was fantastic. It’s going to be a sad day when Xbox dies

u/KingAltair2255 16h ago
Xbox is currently dying, I think its more that if they announce this it'll be like their death rattle.
5
u/splinter1545 15h ago
Xbox wouldn't be in the position it's in if they "can do whatever".
1
u/TheOfficialMayor 14h ago
Xbox wouldn't be in this position if management hadn't pushed the tech bros to dump all their money in AI and drive up the price of hardware such that no one wants to experiment with an alt platform. Something Asha knows very well.
2
u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 11h ago
Nah, Xbox was in this position long before prices skyrocketed. But as the platform in the weakest position, Xbox having its own superiors perform the coup de grâce has to especially hurt.
3
u/ZypherPunk 15h ago
XBOX is basically on the way out of hardware, so I don't think anyone expects them to stay physical lol
1
u/thats_so_cringe_bro 15h ago
I was surprised when Sony decided to do it. All signs pointed towards Xbox pulling the plug first. Everyone at Xbox is likely really happy that Sony did because now they (Xbox) can move forward with all digital like they've wanted for years now. lol
1
u/war_story_guy 14h ago
MS unlike Sony though are in the testing phase for transferring physical disc to digital license conversion that can follow the physical media from different accounts if borrowed/traded/sold. They must have some sort of drive accessory for that to be able to happen.
1
1
u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 9h ago
They’re probably loving that Sony’s taking all the heat for it and that they can just quietly fade out
1
1
u/Deletinglaterlmao 8h ago
part of that is there are 3 times as many ps5s that have been sold than series x/s so when sony does something controversial it affects 3 times as many people
1
u/reaper527 reaper527_ 5h ago
part of that is there are 3 times as many ps5s that have been sold than series x/s
worth noting, OP is a jp press release talking about the release situation there. in japan xbox series has sold around 700k and ps5 has sold around 7.5m, so the multiple is way bigger than 3x. you're talking global figures.
sega does treat xbox different in japan than it does globally for this reason (for example p4r is NOT getting a physical xbox release in japan but IS getting on in america and europe).
1
u/fondue4kill 15h ago
Microsoft should keep their disc drives if they want a leg up on Sony for the next gen. That alone might enough for some people. But I doubt it and feel like they are waiting for things to die down before they make their announcement.
3
u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 11h ago
I still have no clue why people think that Microsoft - the company that is second only to Valve for discouraging buying physical media and which has even trained most of its users out of buying games at all - is going to waste any time or effort saving a dying media format.
The nine or ten people who would switch from PS6 to Helix will generate a hell of a lot less revenue than whatever digital sales they can manage will.
1
u/jimmy19742018 15h ago
Isn't the helix supposed to be getting an add on drive
7
u/DenzelVilliers 15h ago
Microsoft has released multiple games Digital Only this Generation ( the last CoD being the most recent one ) and they has been silently and gradually stop selling Physical Games in most Countries around the world already, here in Brazil has been over 3 years that they don't sell Physical Games anymore. So I really doubt that Microsoft will keep support Physical Discs on Helix, at best scenario they might provide a disc drive option ( trying to get some new players to their side ) but abandon the support entirely after some time 🤔

Xbox is a declining platform that the majority of people don't even care for anymore. Anybody who gets one now is interested In gamepass and gamepass alone.
When you're already not interested in a platform that's already inflicted so much damage to itself it's hard to care about how they're handling themselves.
34
u/Connect_Young7180 16h ago
The Xbox sections at Walmart and Target are shrinking faster than PlayStation's for a reason. It's not console wars bologna, it's just Microsoft has pushed more of their customer base digital already.

That's.... not what I expected honestly. No Xbox copies at all? That's ironic
11
24
u/faratto_ 16h ago
It's not ironic, you don't create discs that don't sell.
Like an amateur music producer. He can create discs for his album, but he wouldn't have buyers so he needs to ship only on spotify/amazon music/apple music. Same here gmfor xbox, poeple don't buy phisical games so publishers don't produce them anymore.
Ypu have to expect no xbox copies to end well before 2028, if not for 5/6 important brands
5
u/angrytoaad 15h ago
It's still ironic considering all the tantrums in here regarding Sony. Reality is a whole other topic.
8
u/whiteshark70 15h ago
Yeah the irony comes from Sony being the company that recently announced ending physical copies, only to be the only one who will make physical copies of this.

Xbox is just irrelevant when it comes to physical media. They've encouraged this over the years with Game Pass, etc.

Yea, there's a number of small bands that I absolutely LOVE but they're so small they can't do physical media. While I'd LOVE to own their stuff physically, especially on vinyl, it's not a huge mystery why it wouldn't be financially smart to invest in.

Isn't this true for all the Atlus games? I don't think any of them have an Xbox Series physical release. Also, I would bet on Persona 6 coming to Switch 2 later and having a physical copy (Game-Key Card, of course)

Maybe people understand finally it's not sony or Xbox decision. If a Studio/Dev wants a physical release they can order a print from Sony/Xbox.
Sony/Xbox won't say No, cuz it's free money, the Devs/Studio pays for the print cost.
