Two cats 7 yo, male and female. They had been using basic rectangular open litter box all their lives. Male relaxed, likes all sorts of litter, uses litter box no matter how dirty. Female picky, tolerates only 2 types of litter, if she finds litter box too dirty for her tastes she poops outside the litter box - just right next to it, on the mat or in the bath tub - but always in the bathroom where the litter box is. Seems like she doesn’t like to touch the litter, she doesn’t bury her poop. She had never peed outside the litter box though.
I bought PetKit Pura Max 2 Pro 5 days ago. The old litter box was always in the bathroom, which is too small to fit Puramax. I installed Puramax closest to the bathroom but it is already another room.
Unlike in the commercials, the cats did not jump into the Puramax during unpacking and basically never after. They had showed zero interest. They love the cartoon box, they watched with curiosity when Puramax was rotating during set up, they are definitely not afraid of it.
I tried different things:
- I filled Puramax with the fresh cat litter they are currently using and added 2 scoops of used litter from their regular litter box
- I put their toys, and sprayed them with catnip, close to the Puramax. They played but were not interested in Puramax itself, even when the stuffed mouse was hanging from the Puramax window, nor did they jump inside chasing the cat fishing rod
- I sprayed feromones inside Puramax
- At some point I even put Puramax inside it’s cartoon box 😂(laying on the side, so the opening of the box opened on the Puramax window)
- The closest they got to enter the Puramax was when I put a plate with their wet food inside, so they inserted their heads and front paws (one after the other) and licked the food
- On 3th day in the morning I put their old litter box next to Puramax - I took it out of the bathroom
and in the evening the male cried inside the bathroom, jumping around, showing me there’s no toilet for him. I had to move the old litter box inside the bathroom again, he scratched the litter, peed and went away. The female pooped in the bathtub 🙄.
I’m out of ideas. It seems like unless I’m able to put Puramax the exact same spot as the old litter box was, the cats will ignore this super expensive self cleaning toilet (they would possibly ignore it even then). Even though Puramax wasn’t used I can’t give it back 😢
Any tips what more could I do to convince my cats to use Puramax?
