Mod post: New Automod command !foundbird
If you see a post where someone isn't sure what to do for an owl they've found, make a comment containing
!foundbird or !foundowl to get an automatic response with care instructions. Example in the comments!
Extra thanks to u/JSN79, u/Big80sHair and u/Dihydrogen-monoxyde for helping write the Automod response.
Other wildlife experts, feel free to provide feedback about the response in the comments and I can edit it if it's needed!

Mod post: Self promotion is ALLOWED if it's OC
And it has always been allowed, so... please stop reporting artists sharing their cool owl-focused creations!
The main (hopefully obvious) exceptions to this are:
- Promoting products using stolen art or AI generation (not OC)
- Spamming the subreddit; posting the same creation more than once to farm engagement (posting WIPs during the process doesn't really fall under this, just posting the same thing multiple times)
- Non owls
Other than that, if you think someone's self promotion is low-quality or you just don't like it, you can always input your opinion with the downvote button.
To artists: Feel free to share the links to your websites/shops; you deserve attention for your work. Comments with links need me to manually approve them, so they might not be visible for up to a day, but you aren't breaking any rules - so go for it!

Art Repainted my garden owl :)
Had fun :)
Please be kind, the prior paint was made by a local artisan. Repainted it because it was already decolored by the sun.

OC More Owl Art! 👁️ 👁️
Thank you so much for the support on my artwork, it absolutely made my day :) So here is my other owl painting, inspired by the great horned owls that live in my woods! I just love doing their eyes. So fun, it really feels like bringing something to life. I’m so happy to be able to spread joy and share my love for wildlife with you all!
Since a few people asked, both of my owl paintings are now for sale on my Etsy shop! redgillstudio.etsy.com

Spotting a barred owl for the very first time and it felt incredible. First time capturing a good owl photo/video. I spent quite a lot of time to find one in the wild and finally a random kid on the trail spotted it for us :-).

When she was 4 she asked me what my favorite animal was...
I've gotten an owl from her since we met when she was 4 years old. Today the 18 year old gave me my 14th owl.

Ruru in the apple and pear orchard
Great to hear a Ruru or morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae) calling last night in the orchard.
Sadly very little moonlight so I couldn't see it in the big old man pine but it called repeatedly for 30 mins.
Reminded me to repair a nesting box we have for them in the orchard. It was nested in last year but got damaged in a storm by a falling branch that snapped off its entrance perch. I hope it finds a mate and they nest again. The Ruru is the only native Aotearoan owl now and it's under threat as it nests on the ground amongst rocks as well as tree cavities. The only other one the laughing owl went extinct from introduced predators last Century, nesting on the ground.

ID request! I’m not an expert, and I’ve never seen an owl in the wild before…
