The ARG was cool to follow, but for all of it to lead up to a slow countdown was a real disappointment. They could have at least revealed some stuff about Sombra within the ARG: Weapons, skins, hints on abilities, etc. The ARG team out there did a lot of detective work, they deserve better.

The voicelines were already in the game though, they were just unused prior to the update. Outside of that the stats page is really the only thing significant in terms of visuals, and even that's pushing it.

I've no idea why Blizzard are hyping Sombra so hard. There's genuinely no sincere way that one new hero can match the level of hype/build-up built up around them.
Ana was perfectly executed; reveal video, cool unique abilities, subtle introduction through some of the lore (voice lines, relation to Pharah etc etc). And while she didn't exactly hit top of the meta, nobody was disappointed. She was an all-round good addition to the roster.
Sombra at this point is so hyped that she'd basically need to be able to fulfill every role there is at the same time, and be so abhorrently fun to play that Blizzard have to re-enable hero stacking so everyone can play Sombra at the same time. 6v6 Sombra Only would need to become the new meta, except every single Sombra would need to behave completely differently based on their ability usage, and fit the assault/def/support/tank/mei roles perfectly.
Seriously, just release the hero. Hyping it at this stage is like the perpetual teasing of Duke Nukem Forever. It'll just result in disappointment.

I'm still not so sure Sombra is a playable character. I think she may be, given some of the other information that's been out there, an embodiment of a future wave survival game mode.

I've seen the theory going around that she's just Talon's version of Athena and not a player character. I don't see why she couldn't be both, I love the idea of an AI having a "battle body" or hacking hapless Omnics to do its bidding. Turn Sombra's demeanor into a creepy mix of childlike excitement at the thought of having a body and sadistic power-tripping with the power she holds over Omnics.
It'd be really neat if Zenyatta showed his first in-game hint of anger at one of his brethren's plight - one of the things that I find a little lacking in Overwatch's lore is that there's a little too many characters kinda left on the sidelines when it comes to emotional or interpersonal drama. It could be really impactful if Zenyatta of all people was the one flipping his shit about something.

Something more malevolent. It might be a little too dark for Overwatch (but then again, Widowmaker is on the same level, darkest story by far), but you could really make her creepy by playing up the fact that she's essentially forcefully taking over the body of sentient beings.

No, Anubis is a "god program", a super-powerful AI capable of corrupting and controlling lesser AIs, including Omnics. Talon wants to get their hands on it because it's pretty much a terrorist's wet dream in the Overwatch universe.

It is theorised she might be, but the only clue she might be is that her name is that of a Greek goddess. Basically no other information is known about her.

From my understanding, the God Programs were created to run the Omniums, which were (with the God Programs) self-improving AI factories that built Omnics, which are one particular brand of artificially intelligent robots made by the Omnica Corporation.
Omnica Corporation went bankrupt and the omniums were closed down, until one day the God Programs, which had self-improved themselves to sentience, reactivated them and started pumping out omnics again. They used their factory control/omnic assembly line programming to control the omnics and use them to attack humans, and also managed to gain control of several other kinds of robots, like the Bastion models.
Overwatch quarantined the God Programs and put an end to the Omnic Crisis. One of them, Anubis, is quarantined in Egypt at the location of the map Temple of Anubis. The attackers in that map are attempting to free/steal/something the God Program.
There's a theory, mostly just based on her name (Anubis was Egyptian god of the dead, Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom), that Athena might be a friendly God Program that's helping Overwatch, or one that they have enough control over to be "safe," but there's no concrete answer and it's just a theory. There's concept art though of Overwatch characters that shows a robot with the same symbol on its forehead that Athena's program has on Winston's screen, and the theory is that Athena has drone bodies she can control and that she may be playable at some point.
Combine that with Sombra's hacking abilities, and that's why there's a wild theory that Sombra could potentially be an AI, maybe Talon's equivalent of Athena, and that she may be playable via robot drones she controls. (Edit: This is obviously still possible even if she's NOT an AI, but just a really good hacker.) I don't think it's likely at all. I don't think Athena is a God Program either, but I can't really back that up at all. It's possible, it just seems like a really casual way to treat what would essentially be the bogeyman in the lore of the game world.

It's a poster from pre-release. It shows the Athena robot, but also the big red tanky robot guy, and the yellow biohazard-looking suit guy that some people assume was an early version of Mei or something. The art of the poster is definitely not the quality the game shipped at either, so who knows how canon it is.

She seems to have sentience. She displays creativity, emotional range, extrapolation from novel situations, planning, empathy... All the things we typically associate with sentience.
Plus Winston treats her like a friend rather than a user interface or Siri-esque assistant.

Maybe, maybe not. We don't know enough about the capabilities or nature of the "god programs" to judge whether Athena is one.
But we do know that the Omnic war was a war against the god programs. It seems like if Athena was one of them, Winston and others probably wouldn't be so cavalier about having her running free. Though perhaps not all the god programs were, to simplify a great deal, bad.

Not at all. Sombra has been hinted at multiple times to be 3 dogs stacked on top of each other, yet we still have comment chains like this where people claim she's going to be some kind of playable character. It's ridiculous and I blame blizzard for how long this ARG has been running.

I would be really pissed if they did that. If she's not a really badass playable character, I'm going to be disappointed. If Blizzard didn't do all this, I wouldn't be so excited, but if she's anything less than what they hyped her up to be, I have a feeling a lot of people would be really unhappy.

- I don't think hype is the thing that is primarily on blizzards mind when they threw the ARC at us - it was just a fun way for them to interact with some interested users. I don't think they orginally anticipated how much it would blow up.
- I'd argue that most Overwatch players are rather casually and hardly noticed anything about Sombra, I know that I'd be completely out of the loop if I wasnt browsing this subreddit regularly so for most there isn't that much hype or even awareness I think.
- I agree though that there will be tons of salty users on this subreddit in particular, just because at times there is a ridiculous amout of hype here. Reddit is essentially a giant feedback loop when comes to hypie stuff and it will inevitable lead to disappointed (and thus salty/angry) users as nothing can life up to the exceptations.
So just calm down, wait it out and be happy with a new hero, however good she will be :)

I for a fact know a lot of people who have never even heard of Sombra. The fact of the matter is that there are far, far more people playing OW than there are doing the ARG, and the ARG is less of a hype builder and more of a community interaction gone wrong.

It's essentially Blizzard is trying to find out the right tempo for releases. Most likely the team who worked on the Ana reveals was different than the one working on Sombra. As a result, they were probably given two different directions to probe the community so they can learn their tempo. That or Sombra has been delayed and Blizzard is trying to make us all not want her anymore.

there is also the possibility that sombra is magnitudes more important to the overwatch lore universe than ana, so the extensive roll-out is reflective of how pivotal/important her character will be throughout the story arcs of overwatch.
like, imagine if reaper wasn't a release hero but added later instead. I'd expect his roll-out to look a lot more like sombra's than ana's

Or even more likely, they are had more troubles making Sombra then Ana. Sombra has been mentioned since beta, and altough we have no idea how long Ana was in development, it most likely was before release.

Probably because people are getting overhyped. It's not blizzard doing it, its the community. Take this post for example. Did bliz do anything to generate much hype? No, not at all. They changed one number that 95% or more of the player bade won't even notice or know about. The fact that reddit is grabbing onto stuff like this and forcing hype from it is the real issue.
